So awesome!
I really enjoyed this, it was refreshing - thank you for sharing.
Invitation into My Mind
I personally spend a ton of time watching videos and reading reviews before I spend hard earned money on something that will also take up my valuable, limited space.
Another useful purchase technique is trading gear in towards something better, which I’ve done once: Launchpad Mini, MPD218 and $50 for a Launchpad Pro MK3: Win!
I will admit upon taking inventory I noticed I have more MIDI controllers than anything else 😂
At the same time each controller I have is different and add something unique to my workflow. At this point I have a few MIDI wants:
1. Roli Seaboard Block: I have really loved the expressiveness of the membranes for many years now. I do have a Lightblock M, but Seaboard allows for more expressiveness.
2. Midi Fighter 64: Don’t need it, but it’s just so beautiful. I do have the 3D and Twister, but the big 64 is a work of art 😍
3. Doepfer Dark Link: for converting MIDI to CV and vice versa.
Synth-wise I don’t feel the need for more, but my only wish that will become a reality is the Waldorf Blofield. I have always loved Waldorf sounds since using the PPG Wave plugin back in day. I love the sounds: the pads and atmospheric stuff is my soul.
I feel like Blofield will round out my collection:
1. Arturia MicroFreak: I bought this because, why not? It has so much to tinker with.
2. Arturia MicroBrute: I bought this because I found a great deal, but I love the simplicity and power of it!
3. Moog Werkstatt: I just wanted to own a Moog and the super low price I got it at made it a no brainer. Sounds good 👌
4. Korg Minilogue XD Module: I love the moodiness of this synth and I really wanted a polysynth. I found a great deal on mine from zzounds, it was like more than $100 off because it didn’t have a box.
Anything beyond my MIDI wishlist and the Blofield is probably not needed. I am thankful for this video because it helped me let go of the idea of buying a Lemon Drop finally 😆
Good points above about space. I got a MPC One, Microfreak, Polyend Tracker,Keystep 37 and Launchpad Pro and my iPad in the middle controlling the lot with a TC Helicon Blender as my mixer and a power tower to the side and my desk which I thought was quite big is just about covered. I could fit my MC101 in at a squeeze but things become messy. Everything apart from the Blender is on a angled stand. Have been eyeing up the 1010 Black Box as it has a small footprint and is quite capable. But space does limit Gas !
I actually bought the Microfreak a few weeks after he made this video...
Don't regret it one bit as It's still one of my most used and beloved pieces of hardware I've ever bought!
That was so awesome!!! I feel like Arturia should use this as one of their MicroFreak commercials.
Then I am a super cheater 😳
Spitfire Audio BBC Pro
I think about behringer motor-61 keyboard controller with Feedback. Do you know If it is any good?
Now I play on digital piano via MIDI on iPad, and have akai 2 octave portable mini keyboard, but as 61 keys I own ensoniq SD-1 which is good but heavy and bulky, so impresion that behringer motor-61 will be good, but there is very small rumor…. Price is about 240€
I bought a Roland V-02HD MkII. It turned up yesterday. What an elegantly designed piece of gear it is (although the chromakey is nowhere near as accommodating as the advanced chromakey of the ATEM Mini pro I’ve been using for the past couple of years (and yes, the two are useful together)).
@Svetlovska you read my mind regarding the strega, the lyra and the Quantradid swarm!
I'd add this too:
And this:
And this:
And this:
Last ‘object’ on my GAS list is no longer on the list as I got it today…
Lewitt LCT 441 FLEX which will be my last mic for a while
Nice, congrats!
Very interesting! I have to check all these out
Thanks...
...I would have saved a bunch if the 441 had been my 'first' mic!
But then I would have missed all the fun 'trial-n-errors' of microphone recording over the years
My current mic collection contains iRig Mic HD, Shure SM57 & SM58, AKG D5 & P120, Rode NTG-1,M1 and SmartLav+, Line Audio CM4 (Which is incredible and best bang for the buck for a sdc pencil mic I've come across) and now the LCT 441 FLEX.
The lessons I've learned are simple, get the mic as close to the source as possible (depending on what is recorded) and use the gain to get the signal proper recording level and pick the right kind of mic for the task...
It's been a fun journey and now I can no longer blame the equipment if my recording suck
Cheers!
Apropos of that, my Art Tube MP has died, it was always quite noisy but considering that I've been running it powered-on nonstop for the past 2 years, it started misbehaving last week and also shutting down in the heatwave. Now it's unreliable and not good sounding.
I've been up in the attic looking at what I can use for a phantom-power XLR preamp or at least pass-through. I'm amazed at how much super-hi-tech stuff I've got up there that basically could be got for such little money, yet a simple thing like a good single-channel mic preamp with phantom power can't be obtained without paying a fairly decent amount. Why can't they be like £5 like most of the other junk I've got? I've got 20 year old cellphones up there with vastly superior tech to a preamp, worth nothing.
I don't want to bring my whole A&H mixer down just for one channel.
Swap out the tubes?
Why not? otherwise it's just going to stay in the attic gathering dust.
I like the Allen and Heath valve desks, they sound good.
cost more than a new solid-state one (if I can get one cheaper than a replacement old valve, that is)
last time I sat the Zed-10 on my desk it took up a third of it, got in the way, and just didn't earn the rent.
Ironically since the prev post I went up into the attic and brought down – a Tascam iXZ (which is from the old early iPad days) – it has an XLR mic socket, provides phantom power (no idea how much, it only takes 2 AA cells, there's a limit to voltage multiplication) and via a further irritating bit of dongularness in the form of a cheapo 4-conductor 3.5mm socket (like a phone headphone socket) which splits out to a pair of headphone and mic 3.5mm jacks, I'm able to use my Sontronics SDC mic perfectly well (into the new Roland V-02HD MkII). Harumph. Too much complication.
The replacement tubes aren't that expensive at all.
12AX7's are on EBay for as little as a £10 for a pair.
Fair dues.
I know that feeling as well.
Zed-10?
I've just had a look and it has a four input/output usb interface
alongside the analogue, that would be sweet for mixing.
How are you using the Roland V-02HD Mkii?
Are you using it as an audio interface?
If the combo you use gets you the sound you want then all's good
but I would recommend going the extra step for the Zed-10 as that's going
to be much better quality that the Tascam iXZ for sure.
I had a zen 10 and loved it, really well built for the money and then few weeks back just stopped working. No pops or noises to indicate something happened, just wouldnt switch on. Tried different power cables but seems to have died.
Sat on my desk and taken great care of so was sad to see it die
It could be just a blown component.
Have it looked at or have a search online.
I've had quite a few repairs sorted out that way.
Yeah, that's so annoying.
One of my preamps blow a couple of years ago and now it's just a brick.
I really liked it.
@muzka
Here's a tear down for the Zed-10
The channel strips are modules which is very cool at that price point.
Normally all the strips are on one board at that price range.
If something goes wrong with one channel you can simply take it and replace it.
Only the top end mixers used to be like that.
My skills in this area are non existent beyond changing the fuse, which I did. I may leave into a local repair store and let some pros look at it
Things I already have:
* Novation Nova Desktop (purchased from its original owner on eBay last month, no one bothered to outbid me despite that there were 32 watchers)
* Meris Polymoon
* iPad Air 3 with lots of apps (BLEASS, FAC, KORG, and VirSyn products are my favorites)
* MOTU M4
* Two computers loaded with Renoise, Ableton, and VSTs
Things I am trying to sell:
* Randy's Revenge (FAC Bandit and Sonic Charge Echobode can get surprisingly close to its tone)
* DOD FX-64 Ice Box Chorus (BLEASS Chorus can replicate its tone pretty well)
* Some plugins
Things I am lusting after but should hold off on:
* Waldorf MicroQ (Love 90s trance synths)
* Kawai K5000S (Additive synths sound cool, but maybe AddStation and Harmor are fine)
* Casio VZ-1/10M (Can do interesting digital sounds, but I already have OPS7 and Opsix on my computer)
* Waldorf Pulse 2/Roland SE-02 (Which monosynth is better?)
* Korg R3/RADIAS (I once owned a MicroKorg XL and miss its Y2K sound)
* Prophet 08/REV 2 (The former sounds better, but the latter has more features)
* Novation Peak (On par with REV 2)
Desperately want but will never ever have for a long ass time:
* Prophet 5/10
* Oberheim Xpander/Matrix
* Rhodes Chroma
Had both of them - SE is more raw, agresive, Pulse more smooth .. both amazing synths, hard to choose.. probably SE because of more knob, more straightforwar editing and pretty nice sequencer..
On other side - SE never inspired me so much like Pulse, i made "one synth" demo with Puks but never with SE .
Ok, I absolutely love the demo! I already bought Repro, Razor, Nave, OP-X Pro II, and Studio One 5 Artist for my PC this month, so I guess I'll save up for that Pulse 2.
:-) i'm glad
I was really looking forward to getting a Berhinger Hiro tribe - the ‘evolved’ Monotribe - but I just realised there is a vital part missing from it!!! There is no ribbon/gate control 😧🙁
I have however just purchased a MicroFreak so I’m looking forward to that
This sounds really nice:
