As a longtime JC120 owner, I don’t understand the appeal of an emulation. It’s main reason for existing is that it plays clean very loud and is a great bed for pedals. But if you don’t need the volume, it doesn’t have a lot of character. And the character of the loud amp isn’t different from at lower volume…it’s just kind of thrilling because it’s loud. The stereo chorus sounds great and no pedal is like it, but that’s a whole other thing. IMO.

I agree. I still have 2 of them which I use as keyboard amps and as far as the chorus goes, yes it’s lovely but only when you’re in the sweet spot in front of it. Once you mic it, it’s not that spectacular. The chorus on my ME-5 (CE-2) is just as good.

Totally. And the chorus is noisy. when you are right in front of the amp the stereo is great.. I go out into the garage when no one is home to bask in the loudness.

Yes that lovely white noise that’s loud even when the amp is turned down low. That needs to be emulated too!

Quick comparison between ME-5 and Drambo chorus.

I am loving the Spring 3 setting on Tonex. I don’t think I have heard a better virtual spring anywhere.

Can it do deep surf tones? Does it “drip”. Does it come with the free version?

It definitely does surf/drip. Yes it comes with the free version and I can dial it in almost exactly like the tank in my Deluxe Reverb.

Well, I just played around with it for a while and thought it sounded terrible. Would you mind telling me your settings? I couldn’t remotely dial in a decent surfy spring sound. THU’s spring reverb is the only one I’ve been satisfied with (the separate effect or the one built into the Singleman model) . Have you tried that one out?

Overall, Tonex sounded like a big step backwards from THU to me. Not even close. As the guy in the video says the opposite, I’m thinking I don’t have it set up well somehow.

Why did he leave this forum?

He appeared to be experiencing various life issues as I recall that might have somehow made being on the forum a bit a burden for him — or perhaps an obligation he chose not to be bound by. That’s just my personal take from it. But ultimately he was a very active member of the forum for guitarists, left. Came back, and left again.

He is a brilliant musician, extremely knowledgeable, and contributed greatly to our group knowledge of great amp app tone and performance. We were quite fortunate to have him here.

  • Tonex is completely based on IR’s. Right?.
I’m happy with the Nembrinis but I can see the benefit of having all these amps and cabs on a single app. It’s a lot faster and easier to test different combinations. The Nembrinis are known to sound better with dedicated IR’s and it’s sort of inconvenient to have to setup the chain with the amp sim, the convolution thingy, etc… How are the cab sims on this?.
I love ToneStack but I like the sound of Nembrini better, but this seems a lot more convenient to use. The “lazy” factor is extremely important.

BTW don’t mention THU as I had a bad customer experience with them and deleted the app.

It cannot be completely based on IR's because an IR can only model a linear system, like reverb. Nonlinearities like distortion have to be modelled separately, using a model, like Kemper or the THU rigs, or any conventional amp sim.

This. I discovered the AB forum and Flo when I was first figuring out how to use an iPad for guitar and he nudged me in the right direction again and again. Flo’s still cranking out videos on YT so hit that “Subscribe” button.

I think it's probably a matter of taste. To me Tonex sounds overly bright, and when I sit down and play guitar through it I don't enjoy the experience much. But most guitar players tend to prefer brighter tones (whereas I prefer a warmer sound), so it might just be a personal preference.

The other thing to bear in mind is that playing style is a very significant factor. Strumming chords is not the same as playing lead, and you are not going to be using the same amp settings for both. So for me personally a demo of someone playing blues licks isn't really helpful, because that's not how I personally play the guitar.

The one thing I did like about Tonex is that it doesn't sound as compressed as most other amp sims, the strings ring out and there is a definition to the transients that is pleasing.

  • im trying to figure out what the pricing scheme is here. the se version says 200 captures for 149 and the straight tonex version says 400 captures for 149.. not sure why one would buy the se version for the same money.. am i missing something?

  • No , intro sale prices. Does not make sense. Got the bigger one.

What do you mean mean “completely based”? The cabinets are , I think , IR-based — the question will be whether you like them. THU rigs and Nembrini cabinets use IRs, too..the issue there is that many people prefer other IRs than the included ones.

I personally don’t love the TONEX free cabinets yet, but I haven’t explored enough to know if that will be true after I have a better sense of the amps’ tone controls.

There are a lot of cabinets to try. Maybe I haven’t found the right one. I think it very much will come down to personal preference.

  • Question: in the presets that have stomps built-in: are they totally baked in or is there a way to turn the stomp box on/off or adjust its settings?

Is there a way (in the free version) to chain presets together? For example to put one of the stomp-only presets in front of a clean amp (without loading two instances of the AU)

  • Also, is there anywhere to set the input gain?

    baked in.

    no.

there's a settings option in the hamburger menu for the standalone version which has in/out gain. but that seems to missing in the auv3.

The presets with stomps have them baked in AFAIK. And if you want to chain a standalone stomp with an amp you need two instances of Tonex.

Is the lack of chaining in a single instance, true if one has the IAPs, too?

I think so, but can’t confirm as I don’t have the IAPs.

Anyway I just spent 30 minutes playing guitar with Tonex this evening and it’s definitely not for me. I hate the sound it makes.

A really quick video, not much effort sorry I have to get to work and I can’t play surf guitar that well but hopefully it gives you an idea. Reverb settings are at the end.

I like the overdrive tone you got there.

Yeah, we just have differing ideas on what drip and surf sounds like. And that’s fine. We don’t need to all hear the same thing.

That Tonex spring emulation sounds, to me, about like my old Line 6 Pod XT spring emulation. It’s more of a pre-delay than a drip.

THU can’t really get surfy either, but I find it’s getting closer than anything else I’ve tried on IOS. Apparently, a spring tank pushed to extreme settings is the most difficult effect to model.

Hmm. Now I’m wondering if the free version of ToneX used as an Audio Unit will be able to transfer settings from a GarageBand project created in iOS to the macOS GarageBand. Something I need to test.

  • The place TONEX kills the others is in the response to pick attack and how you play. Overloud and Rhino come the closest to Tonex. Both take tweaking. But both make a single coil Strat that is very responsive to tube amps FEEL like I am playing on EMGs, which are good and I have some, but SA EMGs do not have the pick attack response Texas Hot Antiquities have. They feel dry and lifeless.

For example the Twin reverb in THU sounds good, but it does not feel like I am playing a Twin reverb cranked and I have owned 4 of them which might be the trouble with my hearing :) Same with Amplitube 5 and Bias. Now fire up Tonex , don't tweak anything and try the stock Twin Reverb Preset (Sweet it is called). I feel and hear a difference in all the amps, the twin is just the most obviously noticeable. Despite my hearing, I can feel it in Tonex like a real amp responds. it's not perfect, but its better than anything else I have tried on iOS or Mac.

Interesting. I find it much harder to dial in a touch responsive distortion in TONEX than with my favorite Nembrini’s. It seems like it varies a lot from person to person whether TONEX feels natural.

  • I think other aspects are part of it too. Like my Pearly Gates SDs clean up with vol knob the way my similarly spec’d eBay alnico 2 cheapies did not. Pickups in my Strat are awesome, but not for everyone. Tonex amps all feel like amps. And THU cleans do not. Gain amps do too. Faceman feels like an amp. But pretty much all the Tonex amps do. As Flo noted in his vid, I need no external IRS in Tonex. There are hundreds of captures and cabs and pedals to mess with in the regular, not Max Tonex. But I will likely buy that. Spent hundreds on rigs….don’t regret any of them in THU. Still have lots of playable patches. That said there are horribly bad user captures and such in Tonex, just like the KPA patch community. I find the IK officials 90% good out of the box. Nembrini I like 0% of the stock patches and wish I could nuke them all.

  • And I think you have to use the right rigs in Tonex, get captures that were actually captured AT edge of breakup and it takes little dialing in, and for that I use boost and/or the volume knob on my Strat and HB double cut. On my Mustang with EMG Fat 55 Retroactives and a Strat with EMGs I push it into breakup with SPC midboost on board. Tonex is not really a THU or Tonestack, it’s an AUV3 with thousands of single rigs.

I think it is a matter of personal preference. I know from what some others have said that I am not alone in finding that, at least with the free selections, that the sound is improved by using my own IRs. I don't doubt that for some people the response of TONEX will feel more natural to them than other sims...and for others the opposite will be true.
