CORRECTION: Turns out there is no subscription service connected to ToneX.

Whatever their model is it seems fair to say that whatever it is could change at any time, regardless of what is said now, and that change will possibly be accompanied by some sort of shit show. There is no way I would ever buy another iOS thing from IK based on the previous flip flopping, disaster management etc etc.

The same could be said about any app or service. Ever hear of Affinity? They make the top selling graphic design and photo apps on the App Store. They just pulled a bait and switch on their customers and boy, are they hearing about it.

I think they released a new version with no upgrade path. Personally I wouldn't call it a bait and switch. IK sold a product, said they had no plans for going subscription, then shortly after did exactly that. That's bait and switch. Affinity just released a new version after, whatever it was, 5 years or more. Doesn't seem too outrageous to want to get paid. But yes, you are right, it could happen anywhere. I've just come to be fairly confident IK will screw someone's pooch sooner or later.

I find I like Tonex better for Cleans and low gain stuff. I find that Nembrini, THU and Tonex on par with high gain tones... TONEX also has a better feel and response to pick attack and volume knob changes than the others.

I've been late to try this ToneX thing, but it's definitely ahead it's competitors.
I used to always end up choosing BST100, but even the free version of ToneX will now be enough and perfect for my needs...
That makes me a little "mad" to think of all the euros I've spent for apps that will now sleep quietly in a lost folder on my iPad 🤪🙈

Every time i use an ik product and want to log into my account I have to restore password because they want me to remember a username instead of logging in with my mail…

and now tonex wants yet another username from me and it can’t be the user name needed to log in…why?! So people can’t try and use the usernames they find in tonex to log into people’s ik accounts? which could easily be avoided in the first place if you had to use your mail to login… the only good thing is that I will never have to remember that one…

Thank you. Normally when I make a video about guitar or bass software I like to pepper it with playing examples. People seem to respond well to my playing and, well that’s my job - I play for a living. But for this video, there seemed to be a lot of confused people in forums, a lot of things that needed to be clarified. So I went down that route. It wasn’t the most exciting video for me to make but at the end of the day, I just want to be helpful.

I installed update 1.0.3 today for Tonex. But it crashes the app now when i try to connect to ToneNET!
Attempted a couple of times and even re-registered with my existing account credentials. It still crashes whenever i try to connect to ToneNET. I paid for TONEX MAX but can only access the tones that are already installed on my iPad, but can’t get anything new from the cloud. This royally sucks! And i am running the latest iPadOS on the most recent iPad Pro model, so it is not that i am using outdated stuff. Anyone else having the same issues after applying the update?

Ironically the update description states that it improves reliability, but in my case it made things only much more unstable. I can see that the red dot on the ToneNET button turns green before it immediately crashes afterwards. Which indicates that I am succesfully logged in with my account, but it seems to crash when it wants to show the ToneNET list.

  • I think we need to always wait at least 2 weeks for updates from IK Multimedia. Sorry about your problem, but thanks for the alert.

    Thanks for the heads up.

By the way, for Tonex users:

If you haven’t downloaded the UR user captures (UR Vintage Vox, UR Old Dry Concert etc.) you need to! They are fantastic.

Also, I have been running just the amp models from Tonex into the power amp inputs of a JC120. So nice and no hiss 🐍 from the JC120 preamp.

It crashes in standalone but when used Cubasis and AUM, I can access tonenet without crashing.

  • Hi. I was downloading some UR tones as recommended by @BroCoast.
I reached the download limit so I removed some tones and went to download. Still says I’ve reached by limit… this has to be wrong. Right?. By download limits I always understood “downloaded tones”, that’s what makes sense.
I bought the Clean amp pack so I have extra downloads.
I don’t know the exact limit. But say I have a 100 user tone limit and I reach, if I delete 5 I should be able to download 5.
Can someone clarify this?. I’m sort of 😳😱 at the moment.

That is a great tip and also works for me, thanks! Yes, you are right and it seems to affect only the stand-alone version and not the AUv3 plug-in. I use the stand-alone the most, but this is a nice workaround for the time being. Hopefully they will fix it. But knowing IKM… it can take a while before they update bugs, unless more people inform them about it. That usually gets their attention. I have contacted support but not yet received a ticket or reply.

From what i understand, once you download a tone it counts as -1 towards your limit. Even if you delete it again you will not get another download back. Although you might remove it from your device… ToneNET remembers that you downloaded it from the cloud and that particular tone will always remain yours for future re-downloads. It does not count how many downloaded tones you keep on your device or delete from it, but it only counts how many times you have actually downloaded a different tone from the network. I have not found any information mentioning that, but that is what I assume and conclude from personal experience and also from what you wrote.

Oh man, then it really, really sucks!. Now I hate @BroCoast for making me download all those UR tones 😂
I went to download an amazing fuzz I found and now I can’t download anything… forever.
It’s funny how we assumed totally different things. I assumed that what counts is the simultaneous Tones you have at your disposal.
According to the AppStore description you get 20 user models with the free version, plus I got another 35 for purchasing the “Clean” pack. So 55 in total.
I can’t find the details anywhere, what they consider a “download”. Yo make it even weirder… where/what are the tones I deleted to make room for the ones I can’t download?. They’re deleted from Tonex and I have no idea what they were, so if I deleted 10 I’m now missing 10 tones.

  • Standalone crashing has to do with this Apple outage, it isn't something that would typically happen or be simulated during testing, sorry for the inconvenience - we're now aware that this sort of outage affects TONEX iOS in this way and we are also told the server outage should be cleared soon:

  • @ikmultimedia now that you’re here… I’d really appreciate it if you could clarify the “download limit” I talk about a few posts up.
Summary… I thought the limit applied to simultaneous User models. I downloaded a bunch and though I could just delete the ones I didn’t like as much to make room. Now I can’t download any more and I don’t know what/where are the ones I deleted.
BTW I’d gladly pay for an IAP that would let me download an extra bunch of user models, I already own the clean pack, not very interested in high gain or a million amps, but I’d like to download some stomps and other cool user generated stuff.

Okay thanks, I will keep an eye on it. I just did a test and ToneNET on my iPad Pro M2 with the latest update 1.0.3. still crashed when trying to connect to ToneNET. While my older iPad Pro and iPhone that were not updated have been able to connect ToneNET witout a problem during this outage. I have a feeling that the crash is not related to the Apple outage, but more so with the actual update.

Note that the AUv3 plugin version of 1.0.3 is able to connect to ToneNET, while the standalone crashes when trying to display the ToneNET list. The ToneNET red dot turns green to indicate that i am succesfully connected but crashes once it wants to show the user tones list. This in itself makes me assume that the issue is most likely not with the server but with the actual software. The update might have introduced a bug for the standalone version.

Is there a direct way to connect tech support through email? I tried the online webform but have not gotten a response or ticket yet. Not sure even if my attempt succesfully went through or not. I have checked my spam folder too, nothing there.

To me , it has always seemed clear to that the user download thing meant that you could choose up to 20 of those models and that each choice is permanent. It wouldn’t make sense to me that you could infinitely swap between user models..as that would basically let you have the whole library at no cost. That is why they say that once you have downloaded it, it is yours for life.

I guess the user tone thing was thought for primarily for Max users or subscribers, not for “pack purchase with extra downloads”, so many purchase options that I guess it’s hard to explain everything in detail.
Looking back your view makes sense, but I thought it meant something else and I don’t think my assumption was totally crazy. We also have the mistery of the deleted tones, if they were mine forever i shouldn’t have been able to delete the,. Again, I think the system was meant for a user with all-access.
There’s a lot of purchase options and I find it’s lacking documentation.

For example, there’s a new monthly subscription. Where are the details on that?. Can I suscribe for a month, download all user tones I want and keep them forever?. If that’s the case, it’s a hell of a deal.

I agree that the system is not terribly well explained and that the u.i. is not great for the situation you mention. My assumption is generally to assume the least generous possibility until I've had confirmation otherwise. My guess with subscriptions is that anything accessed via subscription is only accessible while the subscription is running.

You should read it again. I didn't say you said "never". There's no need to be sorry. You seem to be the messenger not the decision maker. You can choose what you see as bait and switch but as Im the one not representing the company I feel I have the better chance of remaining unbiased. It looks like bait and switch to me. I'll never know for sure but whatever IK say about it will be in the interest of the company not the interest of transparency.

  • I might have made the same mistake @tahiche did. How can you know what profiles you want until you play with them a bit?

IK is definitely an innovator, and the company's enthusiasm for iOS is welcome, but these weird pricing structures and login requirements and upgrade paths all strike me as too much commerce to keep track of.

It's understandable given their constant introduction of new products, but unless you get a resolution to the problem quickly, I worry that it will never be fixed. I have the very well-designed and solid iRig Pads, but the firmware hasn't been updated since 2015. The pads editor is in 32 bit, which Apple hasn't used since 2017 and officially deprecated in 2020; the iRig Pads editor isn't recognized on any Mac with an operating system since then. I can no longer go into the editor and assign the pads how I want. If software or an app doesn't work with one of the standard scenes, I'm out of luck. It works OK with FAC Drumkit; it will not be seen by Octachron.

For your iRig Pads, a simple StreamByter script could remap the pads. Change notes, MIDI channel, whatever. Use different scripts for different mappings, and no need for an editor.

Trying to get a better understanding of the user tones I uninstalled and reinstalled Tonex. Expected I would either be able to download the tones again or get back the ones I had deleted (and can’t replace).
Now I have just one user tone and can’t download any….

Im aware there’s a ton of cases based on subscription, pack purchases, etc but this needs to be addressed, @ikmultimedia.
Again, I had bought the Clean pack which entitles me to extra 35 tones, so 55 in total (20 free version + 35 from pack).

Here’s some comments about the situation:

    • The meaning and details of “downloads” needs to be explained. Simultaneous tones or if downloaded tone is forever, non-replaceable.
    • The number of user tones a client is entitled to should be clearly visible.
    • The number of already downloaded tones should be clearly visible (downloaded 42/55 tones…)
    • If the downloaded tones are “forever” I should get them back on reinstall. Where are they?. How do I get them back?. I need a “restore tones” button, or some list with my downloaded tones. I can’t get them back!. I obviously don’t remember which 55 tones I had downloaded.

    Thanks!

  • Continuing with the above… indeed after reinstalling the app you have no way of accessing the user tones you had downloaded, and you can’t download any new ones if you’ve reached the downloads limit.
if you search for tones and happen to find the ones you had already downloaded it’ll let you download the tone again. So IK is keeping record and there’s a list of downloaded tones, somewhere…. Given the sheer amount of tones available, finding the ones you previously downloaded is a total hit&miss operation that takes ages.
This does not only apply for reinstalling the Tonex app, I guess it also would apply if you wanted to use the tones across multiple devices (2 iPads, iPhone & iPad…).
