@reasOne Here's a good overview (albeit for desktop) that covers note timing, accents, and swing - https://soundand.design/modalics-beat-scholar-5f2c35befcd6
@OrLub Im trying to sign up for the 14 day trial of the iOS version and, basically, it's not letting me. I've registered but the site doesn't recognise that I have (incorrect un or pw. It's not) and if I try to use the trial link in the app it just closes the page immediately. Do you have a workaround please?
@eyalamir and I will look into the trial issue on iOS
regarding your site login issue, can you please email us at [email protected]? We'll gladly help you out.
Is the current price of 19.99$ the normal price for this app?
Yes - and since they pulled out of iOS development I doubt we’ll see them on sale for $9.99 again - it is a great app, definitely based on patternings idea and it tried to compete, but patterning 3 has so much more than beat scholar. Like so much more…but if you like drum machines/sequencers, it’s definitely fantastic but if you ask me , spend the extra ten for patterning dude
When is the next update? I asked in your discord many times to have the presets system fixed. We need a delete function.
Hey there,
Our preset system is shared by several plugins, we're aware that it's overdue for improvements on both platforms. We definitely have it in mind in our next plugin infra upgrade. Thanks for the feedback and sorry for the inconveniences
@OrLub
Hi Orlub , please could you add a “measure” setting to pattern quantize ,equivalent to 4/4 1 bar setting but to pattern change which recognizes non 4/4 time signature & uses that to count the beat to quantize .
At the moment , as far as I can see , it is impossible to work in non-4/4 time signatures properly ,
because using 1/32 or 1/16 switching is too tricky.
Ideally if the project is in 6/8 then a “measure” or “ 1 bar “setting could count six eighths to quantize , or in 7/4 it would quantize to seven quarter beats .
Hope you understand , & can implement .Thanks
I understand what you mean perfectly - It's a great idea to take into account the pattern measure, it would probably need to be something like a "custom" option that you choose for yourself as you can have several measures on the same pattern. You can always set the quantize to 1/8 or 1/16 and use the keyswitches to time the pattern switching perfectly just before the next bar. However I'm guessing it's way easier to do that on desktop than iPads.
Oh i love patterning, p1 was the app that pushed me to start making jams on an iPad honestly. Its a classic. They both seem to have their strengths and misses but def the more drum apps the better.
I mostly only use p3 to create hi hat patterns, and glitchy percussions… i do my kicks in koala 99% of the time.. and use p3 and playbeat app for all the other percs and weirdness
Beat scholar seems really nice for this kinda thing as well since you get so many pies per page, and don’t have to bounce back and forth all the over the place.
I like how all the programming is just on one screen and lets you focus and switch sounds per step without any thinking lol that makes it stand out in that area over p3. Just the simplicity of creating complicated patterns on one page.
Then flipping over to the sound design page to handle all of that in one spot is great..,
They really did an amazing job laying this app out for staying in the creative zone
I would love to see swing per lane and offsets tho like patterning has, that’s kinda crucial to my operation. But i can sample into koala and add swing so there’s work arounds.
Also if each lane could be a different length that would be killer
Thank you for the kind words about Beat Scholar and these are fantastic suggestions We really want to implement different lengths per lane at some point, it's actually been around since our early prototypes but we decided to focus on more essential beatmaking features at first.
Keep in mind that you can have incredible control of micro-timing if you use elaborate subdivisions like 20+
When I need to really zone in on a certain time feel that's what I do for now. You can get nice laid back/swing feel grooves in this method and recreate it wherever you need.
That’s true, with all the slicing options and timing options, i have not dug into that much yet, but you really can get a lot of great control over everything…. It might actually be better than the standard lane length, i just need to get in and there and mess around.
It really Is , IMO, the best laid out drum app to keep the creativity flowing that I’ve seen …and I’ve been using iPad for a long time… i love how simple it is to place a different sample any place you want on the grid and just drag for velocity. As well as just drag your finger to add slices.
Id love to see more people using this app, i was surprised i missed it honestly and just discovered it… but im kinda happy that its fresh and new to me haha
Thanks for quick response , for me the issue is playing manually to try out different combinations of patterns .
the beat fractions always lead to glitchy transitions . A measure would be easier ,removing the need for perfect timing .
Your response seems positive so hope to see this arrive , I would get much more use from Beatscholar when possible . Thanks .
Thanks again for the kind words, it means a lot to us as we're a rather small company and we put our hearts and souls into Beat Scholar... so seeing people discover it and get excited really makes us feel great I hope that we get to a point where we grow enough to implement every wonderful suggestion you guys wrote here.
The slicing options are a solution for certain time feels like laid back/pushing forward/swing variations but it's no replacement for varying lane lengths - we would need to do both eventually, I just offered a solution for now.
I fully understand what you mean and put a note for myself to add that to our list of possible updates. Best-
Absolutely! And thanks for creating this app!
Its not easy to advertise iOS apps I’m sure but i do hope more people discover it and find it as fun as it is
So these are the kind of things that several of the videos have about using multiple AUv3 instances. If you have 2 instances open, you can separately set swing & length between instances.
Awesome man ima peep those out for sure! I typically explore new apps for a few hours prior to watching stuff just to see what i can discover and figure out before any influence has been given. But after jamming with this all night I’m ready to see what people are doing with it.
Any videos in particular you recommend?
Hi,
This video really opened it up for me (and I'm not a rock guy):
But really the whole modalics youtube channel has some amazing ideas.
https://www.youtube.com/@Modalics/videos
Awesome! Appreciate it, I’ll peep that out now and their channel
A very interesting look at rhythm composition..
You do metal? This thing is the only app I know with a djent preset
Mind you it’s like one beat or two but still better than nothing
Plus djent is like hip hop, one beat is the same across the board lol, for any song
That’s why I love it for my 8 string work
What metal u do
Great, thank you.
