It's also worth remembering you got 7 years of free updates with the v1 apps. I feel guilty giving them only £90.

    For sure!
I really can’t think of any reason to not feel blessed by these apps all these years. I’ve made the small fee back many times over doing work for clients. Adobe, great as well, is a subscription and I don’t do enough work to justify the monthly fee - but $99 for continuity of workflow is practically free. I can make that $99 back with one, simple job.

I don’t. They sold their apps as Adobe alternatives and the big selling point was no subscriptions. And now they’re trying to subtly get around that to increase their sales. I haven't decided if I’ll be buying the new $99 combo yet.

  • I bought Publisher back when it was released but haven’t used it once yet. Throughout the 80s and 90s my main living was in front of QuarkXpress, but nobody’s asked me to lay out any print work since the last century, so I think it was a bit optimistic of me

Same here. Obviously there are still real world things being made and printed, but it’s not really where most money goes these days.

I’m so excited. It’s been an amazing year for Apple users. Not perfect for sure, but very good. This could be my last app purchase of the year. I can’t imagine what else i need to buy at this point.

It's been a 'kin expensive year for Apple users, what with them shoving over £100 price increase on their new iPads, and now having to shell out another ninety on stuff that I already bought (thanks for that, Affinity). Triple energy bills, and everything else going through the roof.

We're not all rolling in it, y'know.

If they provide bug fixes for V1 products, but without feature updates - in the same way Loopy Pro does - then I won’t have to buy them all over again when they stop working.

If not, then this a subscription in everything but name.

You just hit the nail right on the head. It’s a subscription without being called a subscription.

They're not "getting around" anything. There is no subscription. Major version releases are a new purchase, just like on millions of other apps.

If your existing purchases stop working due to lack of bug-fix updates, it’s a subscription in all but name. Just one without a timescale.

In what way is this a “major release”? It’s an incremental update repackaged as a new set of apps.

  • Here's an app store link - https://apps.apple.com/developer/id536107177

Searching for "affinity" on App Sliced was an exercise in futility.

Then all software is. What's the difference?

  • $100 is insane. Insanely, cheap. Creative cloud is $600 a year. A bit more capable but come on. This is an excellent price. It pays for itself in literally an hour or two's worth of design work. I get the adobe cloud via the museum I work for but having these apps on both the Mac and iPad in sync is amazing for the price.

Usually an additional discount for existing users. E.g., Ableton giving me 75% off the normal price of the next version.

Affinity say they were unable to do this due to Apple blah blah blah. But music app developers seem to manage it, by providing bundle discounts for existing customers. Instead Affinity have removed the original apps from the Store.

The initial price of Affinity software is very generous, even 75% off Ableton Live Standard still costs more than the entire Affinity bundle for all platforms.

I’ve spent close to the same on Affinity apps than I have on Ableton.

Yes, the deal for new users is very generous, but some of us have spent hundreds on it already, and are now being shaken down for another ninety quid to keep it updated.

  • They are providing a 40% update path. I think that is pretty generous. I never understood why people grumble over users new to the platform that get a great deal - I just look at as an upgrade at 40% off and it works for both iPad and desktop. I don't understand a path to remain profitable and competitive if they never charge for an upgrade. I am just glad they haven't switched to a monthly subscription. These apps have been updated many times during v1 and I am sure they will be updated throughout v2. The ability to have Publisher on the iPad and to be able to switch personas without having to switch back and forth between apps is an amazing upgrade to the suite.

Literally no-one has actually said that.

My grumble, after paying several hundred quid for software that has now been discontinued - no bug fixes, like Loopy Pro or Ableton - is that I’ll have to pay £90 (or significantly more if I don’t jump now) to keep it up to date and secure.

Either provide basic bug fixes, or at least some goodwill gesture for existing customers, rather than lumping everyone in with the same basic deal.

  • In the desktop world this is how it has worked since the beginning and still do, except for the more and more common subscription models. The "subscription in disguise" statement is as funny as it is ridiculous. :D :D

I got a bit disappointed at first because I had expected something else (got a teaser in the mail a week ago). After some contemplating though: this is totally fine and the 40% offer is generous if you're an existing customer (like myself), or not.
You don't have to buy the "all in" bundle.

No, I could instead pay to update the desktop only versions I own for just under £200.

    Bargain!!!

No worries. I wasn't speaking of anyone directly. I was also including some of the comment on twitter as I was searching for videos demoing the new attributes. Sorry, I use indesign and adobe for work and have enjoyed Affinity for work on the iPad with the pen. I also have one client that always sends me publisher files so had to get it on the desktop as well. I do understand if your frustration if you are experiencing bugs - I guess I don't use it enough to have found any bugs that ruin my workflow - so yes, that would be annoying that you are unable to use a previous purchase without feeling the need to upgrade. I assume they just lumped the whole 40 percent off for the ease of transition, especially when the iPad and Desktop can now be linked. I also understand being slightly annoyed (with myself) if I had just purchased recently. It would also be difficult if they did the paid upgrades every year - it's been a long time on v1 with plenty of free updates

But anyway just my feelings and sorry if my comments discounted your feelings on the issue - my bad. I do agree they should have fixed major bugs for previous builds for people not planning to upgrade. I am just amazed at what a complete pro level design/graphics package that can be had cross platform for such a small price.

Forget it! You have decided you have been ripped off and there's nothing I can say to change that.

  • I am very sympathetic to economic concerns, but this is not a subscription in any way, shape. You bought version 1, you still have the apps, they work as well as they ever did on the hardware and operating systems you bought them on as well as the hardware and operating systems that came out while version 1 was on sale. As a bonus, you also enjoyed X years of free upgrades — for me, it was just shy of seven years with Designer.

Serif released version 2 today with a 40% discount for anyone that wants to upgrade; they removed version 1 from sale BUT IT STILL WORKS AS WELL AS IT DID YESTERDAY and you can use it for as long as you want, provided you don’t upgrade your hardware or operating system to an incompatible version. That’s how non-subscription software sales have worked since the beginning.

Also, the Ableton discount keeps coming up. Yes, it’s very generous and I’ve taken advantage since version 9. But it’s also considerably more expensive than the Affinity Suite — I spent $289 CAD plus tax in early-COVID dollars on the upgrade to Live 11, which is just over double what Serif is charging for the perpetual license (also, the dollar has gotten much, much worse since then so I shudder to think what Ableton 11 would cost today). I was in tighter financial shape when they announced version 11, so I made do with version 10 for a few extra months.

Again, I think it’s totally fair to be frustrated at the prospect of spending more money when the price of absolutely everything is skyrocketing. But this attitude that buying any piece of software entitles you to updates in perpetuity really rubs me the wrong way.

I have FIVE desktop apps. That’s about £200 extra to keep them updated.

No problem, and thank YOU for not joining in with the usual snipey comments anyone on here has to suffer, whenever they query the price of an app or upgrade cost.

I have **absolutely no problem ** with anyone happy to pay whatever it costs, or if they think something is under-priced. Good for them. No public shaming, no snipey comments. Live and let live.

Right. So I’ll ignore regular security updates then, shall I?

Yes, I can see that. In contrast I’m perfectly happy and not rubbed-up at all, that you’re perfectly happy to pay for the upgrade.

It’s nothing to do with whether you’re willing to pay for the upgrade — you keep insisting that they OWE you a steeper discount and/or perpetual updates.
