I also think this is not ready for prime time yet, but it shows a lot of potential!

For now using Drambo as an AUv3 host and sequencer is quicker and way more mature.

I hope I can see this grow as the developer has been very responsive.

Yes, lovely dev, I am optimistic this will turn into something special but have been around long enough now to see that devs often don't manage to deliver on such promises so prefer to wait until they are added.

Yes, exactly this. I don’t want to spoil the party but I think to turn this likable new app with some fresh ideas into a DAW is a very ambitious endeavor for a single developer. And I don’t mean desktop grade DAW. I mean a DAW that would be on par with Cubasis, Zenbeats, Garage Band etc. Look how long this three DAWs took to evolve and they are backed by dev teams of big companies. And still @Samu has a long list of features he’s missing 😉 I don’t want to convince the dev to give up but probably better aim for a simpler goal. Look at Loopy Pro - one year on and still no Midi recording. A single developer has to earn for his living. This app can only be a side project.

I think feature wise the app should focus on what it makes fresh. Ease of use with the clip based workflow with AUs and audio. I think it would be wise not to attempt the feature complete DAW. Keeping focus and probably better invest time into project export to established iOS DAWs and desktop DAWs where you can finish tracks on a timeline, mix and master. I don’t want to lecture the dev. According to the interviews in Jakob’s video he is doing it for his pleasure of developing and that is rightfully so. And now off to the AppStore and installing the app 😀

As much as I like the dev, with no midi fx and all midi needing to be played via the keyboard (ie, for example, if you play a factory preset in Splat to Clat it will not be able to record that midi!) it does not currently remotely suit my workflow. So definitely waiting to see what happens, but nice UI, nice dev, a good, promising start

I'm in search for a host that allows you to create performance pages. Loopy Pro ticks a lot of boxes, AUM has some nice things and Drambo too but none of them got what I'm looking for in one package. I would like to load some instruments, sequencers, modulators and FX and being able to create my own control screen(s). I you want to change different parameters from different AU's then currently there's a lot of opening and closing windows (that open differently across the screen). Transport controls, triggers, buttons, dials, knobs, XY pads, drawable envelopes and sequences, ribbons etc. assignable to the parameters of the AU's in use. So in fact the host goes to the background and does the hard work while you've got some screens to perform on.

Now I was hoping that this could be something, but it seems its not (yet). Still got my fingers crossed for some kind of performance mode in AUM or a nice update on Loopy Pro (While both are great ''as is'').

Yes, AUM with ability to create your own performance surfaces - a bit like apematrix but more flexible - would be superb. So Sand having those custom knobs is a very nice feature

  • Might have to break out my Novation Tracks and see how this pairs with that.

You can do this control thing with sand, for each track.

There is a master track planned that should have controls for all tracks, but it hasn't been developed yet.

You could achieve this however using Loopy Pro as a midi controller, you can design the controller you like and then assign those parameters in AUM or Drambo

  • So is this the Ableton iOS app but with AU hosting? And can it host AU fx chained after the instrument?

  • We just had a beta update today so the dev is putting the work in to push improvements out.

Pretty much but you can also move notes around like in a regular piano roll. It can also allow you to easily create a custom knobs screen to control cc parameters.

  • I really like the way the instruments and fx are displayed (all in one scrolling page). This is new and very efficient.

Cool, then yeah the simply moving or drawing MIDI notes is ridiculous to not have in Ableton, even as a guy who prefers to do things live.

Was that a go or no-go on multi-effects chains?

I'd go with Loopy Pro personally, but if that doesn't seem like it has enough capability then both Midi Designer Pro 2 and TouchOSC are powerful multi-page control surface builders.

One drawback to TouchOSC is it only has "rotary" motion on knobs. That drives me nuts. Other than that though, it's a great app.

On the sequencer page it looks like you can only add 3 fx but if you tap on any AU on a track you will go to a page with the AU interfaces. Scroll to the bottom and there’s a plus sign to add more fx.

Yes, you can add as many fx apps as u like I think, even though it looks initially like you can just add 3. Among other things, it could do with a slightly more detailed user guide, some parts are a bit vague and refer to things which a user might find hard to find

Yes, or just do it natively. Won't look too fancy but does the job for sure.

Except you can’t have native modules floating as auv3 :(

  • I very much like the idea of a simple sequencer/host. I hope the app stays that way and does not lose itself by adding tons of functionality. This is what makes it more attractive to me than Drambo.

Both have their uses and I think they rather combine than replace each other.
MIDI control in sequence editing is definitely a big plus in SAND.

  • This app is a bit like Infinite Looper that used to be my favorite sketch pad to create tracks. I really hope that a song mode will be added soon

nice, haven't had the opportunity to try it, I can see the value on it

  • Does this app allow step recording ? The manual talks about step editing, but I cannot find a way for step input.

  • so you can map an au parameter to a knob. but can you record that knob automation? or is that a feature that is coming soon ?

    +1
Also, it seems like there is no routing flexibility or send FX, that´d add up a lot!!!
