Would love to hear more about what everyone did to make drambo click for them.

At the start I was using it more as a Swiss army knife for sequencing & fx. Then I started using it as my main host and found the deeper stuff easier to digest.

My advice is save all your stuff. Every time you do something interesting, save it for a template.

It helps a lot to properly explore the clip section too. I tend to keep the pattern length short and use a lot of rows because it’s easier on my eyes to have 16 step patterns.

Man this is such a good idea that I haven’t done for some reason (saving all templates). Thanks for pointing out the obvious for my ADHD ridden brain 🤦🏻‍♂️ lol

That LaunchControl XL looks almost perfect, but it doesn’t have play and record buttons, which are essential for me.

I often assign the 4 side buttons (Device, Mute, Solo, Arm) to Drambo's transport controls, they send MIDI note or CC as well as the 16 pads.

    👍

Could I see a screenshot of your koala/Drambo setup? I’m curious how you use them together. Koala is my go to favorite app.

The midi stuff on the right is to send MIDI from Koala’s pads back into Drambo’s midi feedback, so I can play with Koala’s pads and they get recorded to Drambo’s sequencer. Also a button to translate the OP-1’s play button so it properly toggles Drambo’s play/pause.

Radio Unit is there because I use it all the time.

I am on the other side of the spectrum. I make music just for me, endless loops. I can work on a loop for 1 or 2 hours and close it without saving. It started with bouncing every midi clip to audio, that felt so liberating not be in control of every tiny step, when it’s done, it’s done. I also offload everything older than one month, just not to get stuck in the loop of listening to the the same old stuff over and over. I won’t be using it anyway, if I would l then I would have done it already.

Whew I really got some learning to do when it comes to Drambo 😂 thanks though! I’ll probably be returning to that picture. My plan is to properly learn to combine the 2, and then use the Nanokey/Kontrol studio duo so live perform and improv tracks easier.

I actually do that as well, I just meant for some reason my dodo brain never thinks to save the effects templates I make before closing a session so I can use those effects elsewhere later lol.

I only really use midi in Drambo. I usually record everything to audio tracks and just do another take if it’s not where I want. And I also offload older tracks. But I do screen record and save every small clip and loop as o usually end up using it in something later. For example, there’s a minute long clip I made in Borderlands 2 years ago that just became a finished track yesterday lol

Is this a beta version of Drambo?

  • Er… I too in good faith thought Drambo had cured my GAS for good, but now reading this thread I think I want a nano kontrol 2…

60€ is not falling off the wagon, is it?

Yea it is if by gas you mean gear acquisition syndrome when have a controller already but if it’s to control your workflow and dRambo then it’s ok to me. I had a shit month so bad time to ask me but you only live once so if it makes you happy and you can afford it get it and tell us the joy it brings you

Yeah, this is a beta copy, but try this:

In the clip settings menu, max out your steps (256) by any means (multiplier or by adding single steps), then go to your Scene/pattern menu on the left side of your screen, and change the Steps per Beat from 4 to 5.

Now go look at the clip settings again and take note of your step count.

Then go back and change the Steps per Beat back to 4.

Go back to clip settings and take note of step count again.

If you go back and forth between these two settings, and experiment a little, you should be able to get some interesting results.

However in my typical projects, I seldom need more than 32 or maybe 64 in one clip. I then just string scenes together. Nobody can tell the difference between 1024 steps in a clip, or 4 scenes with clips of 256 steps each, for example.

Use Misc/Rack instead of Instrument Rack. You can add as many ins and outs as you desire, set their type, etc.

256 it's already too much but it's funny how everyone has different workflows an needs.

You also have a piano roll so steps are kinda irrelevant at that point...

I almost always hit the ceiling when I have an idea and start to record phrases. So I need to use Helium or Atom. I also record with “MIDI Tape Rec” all the time when I improvise.

Add more scenes, drambo will continue recording. They wont auto grow tho so make your patter 256 and duplicate it however long you want to record

However what i do all the time is pressing undo+rec while recording to erase the pattern while improvising

I’m aware of that feature, and there are multiple reasons why I don’t like that option, and I would like to even switch it off.

Ironically, I would be completely happy with 20 bars per clip.

However what i do all the time is pressing undo+rec while recording to erase the pattern while improvising

Exactly this kind of shenanigans I want to avoid, because at the end I like to choose the best sounding take, and I also want to have alternatives like in Logic Pro, but thats too much to ask from a simple groovebox.

You know, I'm a simple musician enthusiast, I can't learn the whole Salieri piece just by listening once. 😝

  • This thread is showing me what I kinda already knew: I’m just barely scratching the surface of this amazing app. I’m about to have 9 days off for the wedding and honeymoon. After I return though, I WILL finally start learning this all more lol. Anyone got any recommendations for a deep dive on it? I have one saved on MiRack, which I’m also slowly learning. But I need a deep dive for Drambo (and Loopy Pro honestly) as well.

I really need to have a month or two restricted just to Drambo. I know I’d love it but the endless new and old distractions on iOS…

  • Thanks for Koala suggestion. Dont even need multiout Koala anyway ( although it can be )

Theres samplers, nicer suited for synthesis sampling.

I’ve been using Drambo a ton lately but I’d like to spend a day or 2 binging various Drambo videos and diving in as deep as possible. There’s so much to learn. And the app is so feature packed, it can take away the need to buy a lot of other apps.

  • Listening to a song from 2001.

Mr Projectile would appreciate the sequencer module ( as well as Drambo )

Even sounds mpe ( or a synth that just sounds mpe )
