I can probably herd the cats a bit more this time out, especially as synthi took so much of the technical workload off me… the question is when; I’m not working at the moment but that can change at any point, I am however a fresh cat daddy right now, and she’s really stealing focus from the two films I’m working on, as well as the very slow rolling work on the EP… yet another excuse to avoid personal creative output does appeal to the fear in me though 😅😂
Ah, cute!
Thanks, she’s a beaut and very affectionate, though come the witching hour she’s a crazy wee beastie with slightly too wild claws, no maliciousness, but exuberant play makes for (my) lacerated hands 😹
I’m in. Shall I begin proceedings and do a cast call and start doling out times?
Do it! Someone mentioned the vid we talked about earlier was taken down. Just hope there are no legal issues.
Metropolis entered public domain on Jan 1st this year. I think there shouldn't be a problem.
@Gavinski , it’s possible it was taken down because the creator infringed on the music, not the film. Just guessing. He said it was copyright free but you never know.
I’m in!
ok I will make a post tomorrow and try to find a decent copy to work with!
Sounds awesome! 😃
do we think this is an acceptable version? @krupa is the expert I think?
https://archive.org/details/Metropolis1927Restored
Hah, lucky @Krupa !
It maybe PD in US but looks like some of the names involved died less than 50 years ago, so raises a question over UK PD (and poss EU, too?)
See here for a bit more info: https://www.dacs.org.uk/knowledge-base/factsheets/works-in-the-public-domain
I’d be happy to stick in a few quid with rest of group to clear this with expert via https://www.justanswer.co.uk or similar
This whole area is a bit of a minefield, and I’m an engineer, not a lawyer!
I'd be OK with that too if everyone involved chips in
Last thing I want is a copyright strike!
I'd be ook with that
Suggest initial question format as:
“Hi, the question relates to permitted use of a film, ‘Metropolis’ (only the video). The film is now apparently in the public domain in the US. A loose collective of audio producers wish to create an original soundtrack to go with it. is it legal to use the film in this way, internationally?“
Something like that?
Sounds perfectly worded to me.
Playing Devil’s Advocate here considering the video takedown: did the ORIGINAL cut of the film enter public domain this year, but not the restored versions?
The restored versions use footage that was not available until recently that was in private ownership. Does the private ownership of some of the footage play into whether restored versions are truly public domain?
I’m OK with getting some advice. Would help to know the kind of money we’re talking, though: that web site seems to be remarkably coy about quoting a figure, which worries me a little.
@bygjohn- I’ve used it before, years ago. Don’t think it was more than about £20, and I got as many follow up questions as needed till satisfied. They were really helpful tbh, but as I say, that was years ago. If anyone has better idea, great
So sorry it looks like I’m advertising the site now. I assure you it’s not what it looks like, honest guv…
@Kewe_Esse Thanks for that - I made the mistake of looking at the FAQs 😀
TBH I don’t think you’d get legal advice for less. So fair enough.
On the topic of restored versions etc, there’ll be copyright on the restoration, so my slightly educated guess would be that if a version is out of copyright it’ll be an old, unrestored version only (I’m not a lawyer, but used to be a librarian - damn, I just outed myself!). Similar to Vampyr, where we couldn’t use the restored version for the same reasons.
Another approach to consider might be to select the cut we really want to work with, and write a proposal to the copyright holder with open options for them to platform it… I’ve had mixed results from doing this with authors in the past; one was extremely receptive and ended up becoming a friend and collaborator for a period, others approaches were blankly ignored, or frankly denied… main thing is shy bairns get nae sweets/nothing ventured, nothing gained 😄
I don’t think we need to contact anybody
Not much point in requesting advice until version selected, I suppose. That’ll be the first question they ask I bet
The issue is PD laws vary by country, so what is PD in the US may not be in UK etc. Makes the black and white of it a blurry grey.
I’m looking at far too many Metropolis videos on YouTube, so I’m getting this sort of thing in my feed now…
Quite lovely
I feel we are close to the release
The force is strong in this one
