I have collaborated with @Jankun on an orchestral project and he (and I) use Staffpad with its excellent orchestral libraries. He will likely check in and confirm this. StaffPad has rendering capabilities from notation to audio that are in many ways superior to Desktop apps because it converts notations like pizz, accents, articulations into sounds without the hacks desktop DAW’s require to switch between sample types using CC’s. It basically takes MIDI out of the process which is fine for composers that write their music as a “score”.
There’s a pending update of Staffpad that converts piano audio and MIDI events into notation to save the laborious pencil entry of crafting a score. It also adds a video timeline in the score to assist with coordinating timing events with the video.
The last Staffpad update added importing audio files which has been great for adding drum parts without the pain of notation and the sub-standard drum samples compared with the excellent LUMbeats apps which can export audio files.
I hope the MIDI features have been hardened in the upcoming update since complex MIDI imports tend to fail. Importing in smaller less complex segments is often the only workaround.
Staffpad is targeting the film and TV composer audience by giving them an iPad/MS Surface app that can create rendered scores from scratch on the device without any need for Desktop apps or software.
The upcoming Staffpad update will also provide for free the MuseScore sample libraries making the IOS Staffpad product more compelling at the $95 entry price.
When is the update shipping? That’s still a secret but they did let slip a Youtube video of the new features so it could be pretty soon:
My contribution was 100% iOS using exclusively Staffpad.
Brilliant! I wish I was comfortable writing music that way, just to be able to use these kinds of sounds, but I'm not and don't aim to invest the time needed either. But that's great to hear! Zimmer better watch out!
Thanks for the person that contacted me via private message saying they liked my bit. I was having a bit of crisis thinking it might not have been good enough. LOL.
Yours was the opening section and got tons of praise in the premiere, I don’t know if it can be seen again but defo check it out if you missed it! It really set the scene with some foreboding energy as I recall…
Totally! I thought u were there in the live chat at that time, no? Everyone was saying what an amazing start it was!
Thanks Krupa/Gavinski. It's depressing how fragile our egos are.
You can still toggle the live chat on on the video. You’ll see that people loved it.
I totally emphasise, I deliberated sending in my section for ages, a mixture of hyper self criticism, irrational pursuit of perfection and an alarming amount of self doubt. Then I thought well what the hell, that’s part of the creative process.
+1 on the loving it: it was a great opener!
Yep!
Bloody great intro!!!
Just to intensify: great fuckin intro, nice one. So much foreboding analogue vibes from that opening, loved it.
Thanks everyone. Ego restored
