I’m with @Krupa on that one. @Synthi did me a solid favour by losing the start of my piece entirely, and fading parts up and down (through eq wizardry, presumably, since he had only the final mix to work with?) so that my stuff sat much more comfortably with the other tracks than it would have done had my original, full time slot gone ahead unaltered.
I just wanted to add my comment along with @Krupa and @Svetlovska.
I think the flow of the edits were tasteful, but it’s obvious that these allocated time periods are just suggestions as in my case my contribution was reduced quite significantly and moved out of the time in which I had envisioned where the music would be placed. But, the correction worked well. So I personally think that in the end it’s obviously a process of flexibility depending on where the editor/producer sees the entire picture @Gavinski.
It’s a group thingy with a lot of people involved in different time zones with various amounts of personal activities unrelated to this forum. The fact that this was completed and the outcome came out so well is a testiment to all involved.
I very much enjoyed watching the whole thing yesterday. Everyone’s contributions were excellent. Looking forward to the next one.
So far 681 views on YouTube.
Good points @Krupa @Svetlovska and @Mountain_Hamlet!
Yes @cyberheater the vid is doing well, but if Vampyr is anything to go by, viewing numbers will probably quickly drop. So remember to give it another good shilling folks! All it takes is for one person with influence to see this and you never know where things could go from there, but even not thinking in those terms, it's just a pleasure to think of as many people as possible enjoying this genius wonderful soundtrack!
Also, Cyberheater, I fully understand your feelings about your part not appearing where you expected it to. It seems people have lots of different views on whether they really care about that or not, so I guess we all have to discuss it and go with whatever the majority thinks. Maybe even worth making a short poll for.
Even though my bit didn’t start where I thought it would it still ended up working out well. I’m okay with it.
@Krupa and @Synthi did a brilliant job with my piece , exactly where I wanted it to fit the visuals 🙏
Well done to everybody as well, a tremendous piece of work 👏

Also, although that problem of the timestamps not appearing on the video is still a mystery, at least the timestamps are clickable so that if you click one it will take you to that time in the video
I’m basically in the @Krupa @Svetlovska @Mountain_Hamlet camp. It felt like a huge risk having something in my piece that was so tied to the action (it’s the bit where Rotwang throws the brick down), because mastering and arranging so many pieces must inevitably mean that the person doing it may have to slide things about on the timeline. As it was, I had to work quickly (late substitution), and just had to go with what I’d got.
I also have mixed feelings about people dropping out - on the whole I agree that if you’re not sure you can deliver, don’t volunteer. But a) if that had happened I wouldn’t have had a piece in this project as I was a substitute, b) stuff happens to people, there always needs to be a backup plan in case someone has to drop out and c) I’d hate for people to decide not to participate if they were afraid they’d bite off more than they could chew - I’d like people who are hesitant to think they can take the risk, and if they really can’t manage it know there’s a backup plan if they can’t deliver. There’s maybe a way to make that work that isn’t an admin nightmare though. Immediate random idea - have an initial early deadline, and if someone who’s having a go doesn’t think they can deliver something workable by that initial deadline, then reallocate slots to a subs list at that point. Feel free to ignore this, it’s not thought through or anything.
Thing is, it’s largely dependent on the film itself. I think it was @Gavinski who pointed out that Vampyr was a much easier film to score - the whole thing was very trippy and atmospheric, and atmosphere was the key thing (that said, on that one @Synthi managed to get something in mine - I think a bell tolling - to align bang on with the old man getting shot, which I was very impressed by). Metropolis is much more action driven, so inevitably people would be drawn to link stuff directly to the action.
I don’t think there’s a one size fits all approach. That said, the arbitrary 5 minute slots for Vampyr were a fascinating approach that “shouldn’t” have worked, but actually worked fantastically. And yes, I know there was some behind the scenes negotiation between people about precise transition points for the slots, but as an art project I liked the random nature of the fixed slots, if you see what I mean 🤣
Either way, putting the whole thing together was a huge job, and I’m also one of the ones whose work sounds substantially better after the mastering job @Synthi did on it, and the way the whole thing flows together is amazing. I think a lot of the success on both projects is down to that level of skill and I dread to think how much time and effort went into doing it.
+11
Kudos all round. The soundtrack works amazing well within the film, but would also sound great on its own.
Here's my update to the times. My start time of 00:48:00 matches what BygJohn had listed for me. And I show Alfred's adjusted start time as being 00:49:47.

+100, @Synthi did an amazing and difficult job, we're all extemely grateful!
Also loads of good points there John! @bygjohn, there are definitely pros and cons to any way of doing things.
@DavidEnglish thnx!
Watched it all. Wish Fritz could hear it. Audiences must have been stunned in 1927 and, indeed, it all came tumbling down two yrs later. He couldn’t have made human eye’s any bigger and the shifting of bodies left to right and back again was a powerful leit motif.
I liked all the music and thought the music behind the robot Maria transformation scene and the following ten minutes spot on. Also the music behind get Maria the witch. Could have seen the whole soundtrack done by those two contributors (who are they?), but I’m partial to acoustic sounds. The synth sound choices throughout were excellent. Certainly would have blown Lang’s mind.
Also a shoutout to the special effects rings that enveloped the robot during the transformation. Way ahead of it’s time!
Mike... If you look at the vid description or the pinned comment, there are now accurate timestamps for about 70% of the contributors 🔥
I'm looking forward to giving this a proper watch this evening, completely immersed this time!
I have adjusted the beginning of the @LinearLineman part that starts exactly at 01:15:27 (and ends de facto my part)

Thnx @cuscolima - I'll update the vid description and comment, which I've been doing regularly since yesterday 🍻
Maybe there’s an idea there; to do a more cut and paste one, use a less revered piece and mash it up a bit more, doesn’t need a solid master, hard cuts against each other, people could even cut their own sections out of a selected movie, or even from a selection of them - there were a few rejects from the first set that might be suitable, I’m sure there was one mad one that had extreme tints on it, was that Wolf Blood maybe?
We wouldn’t impose much or at all on synthi and it could be done in time for Halloween…kinda like a selection of reverse music videos, video musics or something…
That's an interesting idea!
If @Svetlovska did the witch sequence my hat’s off to a real artist. (And @Synthi, too!)
@LinearLineman : thank you! Coming from such a skilled proper musician as yourself, that means a lot. To be honest, @Synthi did a fantastic job of making me sound better than I had any right to be. (My original piece had a messy start, which he wisely omitted, and some wild and not well thought out dynamics, which he somehow managed to tame.) He is the real star of the whole adventure.
Really amazing work everyone, and thank you to all involved!
Adjusted the numbers to accurately point at the start of my choral piece. Really nice blending in with the previous and next work, master's work @Synthi

that Well cool
I jumped from contributor to contributor to check out the work and it’s an impressive demo of IOS as a creative tool. Many of my favorites are represented and I like they way everyone approached the assignment.
I listened today while working and congratulation to everyone. It sounded great. Lots of nice orchestration. Swam instruments I would guess?
My bit was mostly electronic but used a geoswam instrument played live on geoshred on the iPad screen. I'm guessing the full on orchestral stuff like @JanKun's was not using iOS apps for the orchestral sounds, but he'll have to comment on that
From memory, my bit was made using Hilda, MiRack, Noises and a field recording of a grabber dropping rubble into a truck, plus effects (notably Spacefields on the field recording). No Swam.
I’m pretty sure I used both a wind and a string swam instrument, some field recordings from Greece, some samples I took of bells, as well as stuff from my Tubes of Metropolis sample pack (https://krupa.gumroad.com/l/TubesOfMetropolis), and a couple of free sound dot org samples of crowds roaring…oh and some frms patches I’ve been working on…
Mine was done entirely on the desktop as I barely use the iPad(s) for making music these days.
Sounds, loops & samples as used were from Splice and Arcade (Output), some of the transition sounds also from Loopcloud and Slate. Various (soft) synths in use, mainly Falcon and Quadra (Muted & Harmonics) from UVI and the Augmented Series from Arturia (fab stuff). EZKeys was also very helpful, here for the dance part. Some of the generated midi sequences I transferred to other sound sources and adapted them. Melodies were played (as long as they were not part of the loops, like with the orchestrals), and the chord progressions for each part were defined beforehand as a framework. A soft Ableton piano was also used briefly for a small melody line. Loops layered, tuned and partly covered with vinyl crackle. Cello phrases from Sonuscore (partly running backwards to express his dizziness). And the bongo groove in the dance part I filtered out of one of the current Bachata hits.
All in all, it was a great experience and a completely new way of working for me. I'm a singer/songwriter, I usually do kind of indie pop songs and my main instruments are guitars, which I didn't even use here. Daw was Ableton. Great fun. Cheers & thanks everyone.
