I agree @iansainsbury. However, having a broad enough palette to do reasonable orchestration is desirable - so that even if only used for a sketch (or as part of a mix), the instrument suite is available. I concur that we are not going to see competition with VSL or the like.
As I mentioned to Cinebient earlier, the Synful Orchestra (synful.com) is fantastic. It only takes up 32 MBs of space on a hard drive. It runs on Macs and PCs right now, but if they started getting inquiries for them to port it over to the iPad; maybe they would consider it. It is light on storage space, but heavy on the CPU. Since the iPad is getting more and more powerful, I wonder if it could run efficiently?
It has the most realistic sounding orchestral instruments on a computer without using samples. Check it out.

The Mac/PC version runs about $500; but if they could make a scaled down player version for $50 or less; I am sure it would be a big hit with iOS musicians who want an orchestral library in their pocket.
I also think not that iOS will ever be able to run things like VSL, Omnisphere or huge things like that. O.k. maybe in some years. The probelm is the size of the screen and the UI. I also think using the iPad as controller would make much more sense for this. But there is still not much too find beside some synths like Alchemy, Omnisphere, Logic Control and a few others. A bigger iPad could handle this maybe but playing 88 notes on a touchscreen is another competition.
Who knows, maybe in 5-10 years synthesis can do everything sounds real what you want..... but this would need really powerful CPU's.
@bsantoro, I really like the strings on that Synful demo, but the brass isn't so great to my ears. However, I love the small size...it would be really interesting to see if something similar was achievable on an ios device. @ChrisG, I'd love a Kontakt style library in my pocket, but musicians who use sample libraries extensively in their work already have to use big, fast external hard drives to house them or increasingly - another computer (or two...or three!). I think we're a long way from being able to duplicate that kind of sound quality on ios. @MusicInclusive, agreed, it's great to be able to use orchestral instruments to make a decent mock up on the ipad. However, far cheaper apps already do the job pretty well. Thumbjam is terrific and if you want to increase your orchestral palette, Jonny Capes over on the ipad musician Facebook group has made a whole bunch of orchestral sounds for Thumbjam that sound pretty darned good. And free!

Be grateful if you could post a link for these thumbjam orchestra instruments ?

Uau! Thank You so much!
Jonny made versions of the SSO instruments for TJ as linked above, just to be clear. You can actually click on those ZIP files in Safari on your device, and Open In TJ to install them individually.
Are there any additional string, woodwind, or full orchestral section instruments; instead of just individual instruments available for ThumbJam to download or as IAP? Or how about full orchestral sounds?

Thank you @Sonosaurus. I love your work by the way.. Curious about the next big hit.
Will try those samples.
Has anyone else noticed that some of the new presets do not work? French horns 1-5 and bassoon-flute & oboe, for example. They will just keep playing whatever the last preset is that's loaded.
Coloobar this probably isn't what you want to hear but all the presets you mentioned in iSymphonic work perfectly for me. Using iPad Air on IOS 8. The only trouble I'm having is with volume spikes?
The interface of new presets is little confusing as some are in app purchase so of not play but still appear to load in hut the players are kind of greyed out to indicate is part of IAP and in these cases it just carries on playing last sound

I'm finding I have to back off the volume which isn't ideal unless I get some volume spikes/distortion.

Presets that haven't been purchased won't work and the players are greyed out as an indication, (they will just play the last preset) you need to click on the players and make an IAP as @RedSkyLullaby mentioned. It took me an age to find that out I was looking everywhere for the IAP. Maybe it's just me but I found that just a little bit esoteric.
These presets aren't greyed out.

My bad. Don't know what the problem could be then. It's OK on my iPad Air using 8.1.1

Looking at a previous post I guess those presets I mentioned are part of the IAP. I didn't realize it's the people that appear greyed out and not the dropdown window... it is pretty confusing the way they did or like that
Definitely an odd choice in the way they chose to implement the in app vs included ones.
So sad. New Update but still no editing like ADSR, Dynamic Controls, Filter ... no Sample-Stacking Variations - nothing new but 19 Soundsets für 400€. This is not the way I expected they would develop this project. Disappointing.
