I’m new to Strokes. I’m very confused by ‘notes’. Is there a way to limit which notes are available through pitch modulation, or is this something else. Generally wondering if there’s a comprehensive iOS tutorial out there to follow too. 🙏🏻

Yes, if you press the a/b button next to the voice you get a keyboard to select notes to quantise to

The videos on the developers YouTube channel are really good and he uses the iPad in the latest ones. They are the best place to start imo.

    Ah hah! Thanks.
I’ll have a looksee at the videos I checked a few out but they seemed to be of older versions and very bitwig orientated, which is fine, but also makes it a little more challenging

I think this was the one I started with. It’s the desktop but it’s pretty close to the version that released on IOS, so a good place to start.

After that, check out the videos he did for the sampler and synth updates.

I’ve watched the vids (have to really concentrate to keep up with his rapid-fire speech), but not totally sure how note changes are added - difficult to work out without having the app. It looks like they’re set via the 7 ‘note’ slot buttons on the left, but I’m sure there’s more to it than that, as it’d be a very clunky way of creating and playing a tune.

I’m happy with the random, unpredictability element of the app, but hopefully it’s possible to add a bit of melody or bassline in there somewhere without switching between the ‘note’ sections?

A poster in the update thread said he was able to send chords in from Scaler and get arps out. I still haven’t gotten that far. I did suddenly grok what the weights section is for and how it works today.

That might have been me. The trick to get that working is the note learn button. If you keep it turned on the notes list will fill up with notes from chords you feed into it. It will update them on chord changes too.

Are you sending Scaler into it independently? (ie, standalone) or through AUM?

I tried routing Fugue Machine into Strokes in AUM. Strokes definitely responded, but the Strokes notes were all out of tune. After I clicked the little keyboard icon they started playing in scale. However, they then filled up the Notes buffer and I lost the nice sequence I had going before. This made me sad, but at least I did get it working.

  • @FordTimeLord enjoyable noodle that! Took me off the fence.

  • Guess it’s time to read the manual for this one and who knows, maybe it’ll end up being installed on my iPad…

    Inside AUM.

I found it pretty easy to learn, and I’m not really in tune with the universe of complex apps. It’s a modular experience: you can plug and wiggle at random, or you can learn it intellectually and try to steer it with knowledge. Either way it’s still pretty unpredictable. Huge fun though.

OK, I've dug the the manual and felt a bit meh after reading it.

I can always load the Spectrum AUv3 or TeraPro when I need the Mutable Instrument and sequence/automate them with Drambo. The integration of the Mutable Instruments stuff was what initially sparked the interest.

    So for now, no buy...

    Cheers!

I guess Drambo covers so many bases, it’s hard for new apps to compete - but what attracts me about this, is that it’s an ‘all-in-one’ solution - so you’ve got all your samplers and synths in one box, and tracks on one page. Plus I’m still in the sandpit, where mastering Drambo is concerned.

I’ve also yet to see a clip of Drambo (or any other app for that matter) come up with the manic intensity this seems to have - that old Squarepusher/Aphex vibe that I fancy doing a bit of.

What’s holding me back is the lack of demo vids - there’s so much going on that it’s hard to untangle how it’s being done. If ever an app needed a @Gavinski or Soundtestroom vid, it’s this one! If it was a tenner I’d take a punt, but at twenty big ones…

The problem is that complex modular patches are inherently unknowable. You can learn and understand each module intellectually, but the output is the result of such unpredictable synergies between modules that it sometimes seems almost magical. This is the beauty of modular.

You must have a mighty powerful iPad to load 8 instances of Tera Pro and sequence them with Drambo.

I maybe wrong, but AFAIK in Dambo, you can only tap midi into a sequencer track from only one other. Can you take gates and CV from four Drambo sequencer tracks, combine them and use use logic modules and threshold limiters to drive four other sequences? I think the answer is no, but I'll be happy to be proven wrong.

Much respect to the mighty Samu, but you are underestimating the power of Strokes, my friend. You could build most of it in MiRack, but it would be a huuuge patch, and correspondingly hard to tweak. Strokes gives you this amazing patch/patch template with endless tweaking opportunities abstracted into a playable GUI. It is just super fun to play. The MiRack copy would not be nearly as fun.

Yeah, the all-in-one solution is very appealing, particularly as I don’t have the Tera Pro IAP’s, I wouldn’t know where to start building a Drambo version, and my iPad probably couldn’t cope with 8 instances anyway.

No rush, I’ll keep checking any demos that appear, and with such an active dev I doubt I’ll be on the fence much longer!

  • Is it possible to use other Audio Units (e.g. hammerhead) in drambo with strokes and control their cc?

Yes, it started out as a MIDI sequencer for doing that kind of thing. The sound engines were added later but it an still be used as a purely MIDI sequencer.

    Major milestone!

  • The v1 Max patch apparently had swing. I see a swing parameter exposed in AUM. But it’s not mentioned in the manual and I see nothing on the GUI. Anyone worked this out?
