The v1 Max patch apparently had swing. I see a swing parameter exposed in AUM. But it’s not mentioned in the manual and I see nothing on the GUI. Anyone worked this out?

It’s this one next to the accent velocities

Many thanks! It would be better to have a separate swing clock for each of the four sequencers, to get really deep into the Steevio groove. But I'm happy to have at least this one.

  • The swing can be quite aggressive in a good way, really love the way it makes the strokes move B)

  • Thank you for this post. Just bought it. I am not a musician, I do not know music theory. I use ears, feelings and the ability to sequence has been a godsend for me to jam. Some say you can never have enough synths. I feel this way about sequencers. Having the Polyend Play and OXI One to name a few on the hardware side and made cool ones on the iPad. This was an insta buy and excited to learn and work it into the lineup. To the dev (if he may be lurking) thank you for the updates and ability to let those of us that don't know how to play traditional gear, have a great experience.

I see you all very enthusiastic about this app and I'm curious if it would fit ambient: as far as I see, it seems pretty focussed on rythm and monophonic parts. Anyone using it for chords or more melodic parts? Thanks!

Rhythm is its wheelhouse, but you can make ambient with anything. Plaits has a chord mode, and you get eight channels of Plaits. Set the tempo slow, turn the envelope attacks and decays and reverb and delay way up, and Strokes will give you ambient.

Thank you! Yes I did something similar after buying it. I wish there were slower time divisions than 1/4 and I’m discussing this with the developer. I also spotted some hanging notes in MIDI that should be fixed soon.

Here’s an ambient demo using Strokes and Factory:

Very nice, how can i use different samplers in Drambo and AUM with different Midi ch? At the Moment i ve just one Sampler with different Notes .

You have your Shares sliders all up at 100% until the very end. Pull those way down and you get more…spaces. It can be functionally equivalent to a slower time division.

Sorry, I don’t understand the question. You can set midi channels in the settings. Not sure if that’s what you’re asking though.

I think I just passed the "understand half of Strokes" point. Starting to genuinely love this app.

I’m just approaching the “I understand absolutely NOTHING about Strokes” point.

Really really hoping @Gavinski or @sfm make an easy-to-follow, thorough tutorial for this. Have watched the dev’s videos and he seems like a really nice guy. Generous, passionate. But in all his vids he talks very quickly and assumes a level of understanding that I simply don’t possess

What I love about this app is that even after you understand it, you still cannot predict the output you’re going to get. It has some inherent unknowability due to the complexity of the macro patch. That’s the essence of the modular synth experience.

In AUM with Strokes and Drambo my flexi sampler in Unit 1 trigger all Note events. So Unit 1 with the Kick triggers 2 lanes. Flexi Unit 2 is my snare with no sound. How can i Route Unit 1 in lane 1 and Unit 2 in lane 2?
How can i use the flexisampler with a Loop and set 4 slices to the 4 lanes?

Sounds more like a question for a Drambo thread. At a guess I’d say look into the midi filter module in Drambo but I’m not sure, sorry. If it’s any help, the step sequencer lanes in Strokes send on channels 1-8 so you might need to put a channel filter in front of each sampler.

Yes, I get that sense from the vids I've watched and from people's enthusiastic response here on this forum. And that's why I bought it!
I'm sure it'll start to make sense soon.....Just need to put the time in...

The manual is quite good indeed!
I just wanted to slightly counterbalance all comments about complexity in Strokes: it very much depends on your background. Coming from modular (VCV / miRack), I think it's pretty straightforward and much simpler actually and the manual (and occasional videos) quickly answered my remaining questions.

When I started modular, the most puzzling part for me was that a note is decomposed into two signals: pitch and gate. So if you change the pitch, you'll only hear a note when the gate is simultaneously on.

This is the same idea here. You've got easy controls on gates with the sequencer. Then the matrix and weights offer modulations sources, just like LFOs in regular synths.

This is a tool for experimenting, don't expect full control as some behaviors are hard coded. In this sense, it's less flexible than modular. However, this same hard coding encourages experimentation.

Multi out update landing on iOS very soon...

Strokes v3.11 is available now for Mac/Win on VST3/AU - iOS is in review and will be available soon (hopefully today!).

Strokes is now a multi output VST3/AU/AUV3, each voice (synth or sampler) can be routed to an individual audio channel for processing & recording.

    Also new

    • Added a built in tutorial to help you create your first rhythm, melody and pattern variation. Access this on the info “i” menu.
    • Hovering over / tapping a parameter on the sequencer page will display the parameter’s name in the header.
    • Weights delays are now sample accurate.
    • Matrix sequencer only advances a single step when on ⅛ or ¼ clock rates.
    • Fix sync when looping in Cubase & Studio One.
    • Fix AU/VST3 project export.
    • Fix an issue where outgoing MIDI notes would get stuck at slow bpms / clock rates.

    demo jam here....

  • Anyone else getting sporadic pops and clicks with Strokes? I'm using it inside NS2 and watching the CPU meter at the bottom, which is only maybe 1/3rd up, but every now and then it spikes to the red zone and I get little pops and clicks.

Wish I could take credit, but that's the man himself - @congburn ...

  • Nothing seems to happen when I tap on “Tutorial”, @congburn, thought you’d like to know! M2 Pro 12.9” latest OS

There should be a pop up that appears in the bottom right corner:

  • @congburn great wee starter tutorial! Any plans for more advanced ones in app?

    Thanks :)

Yeah defo up for making more, the question is where to go next - I was thinking about breaking down Weights & using it to modulate sounds but I'm open to suggestions

  • I can't wait to play with the multi-outs after work today. I like exporting stems from AUM to chop up and play with in Logic and I'm not a huge fan of the onboard fx in Strokes, so this just became a very usable tool for me.
