Officially the desktop licence is separate and only available from the devs site - the desktop version is AUv2 / VST3 which at least means it works in any DAW.
Not sure if you could get the iPad AUv3 to work on a M1 / 2 Mac (or even if it would show up in the appstore on one of those) - I don't have one to test.
You don't need aum, it just says 'a host like AUM' but a lot of midi heads like AUM for its ease of routing.
Is it all really small, hard on the eyes and / or responsive to touch?
Trying not to get too influenced by the celeb endorsements - if more ios apps were on producers' radars we'd be getting plenty of write ups like that for iOS-native apps!
Does sound very interesting though.
Hmm, I don’t know y’all… I really don’t see anything that can’t be built in the big D.
Is there anything?
Yeah I don’t know with this now it’s out; I’d hoped it would be cheap enough on iOS to see if I liked it enough to get the desktop version… the YouTube demo is intriguing but for some things you need to get a sense of the old ‘mouth feel’… I think I’ll wait until it gets glowing reports from all and sundry, and then see if any shine rubs off after a few days…
Is it AUV3?
Also does it produce sound or is it just a sequencer.
If it produce sound, does it have samples, is it possible to use our own samples.
The description is not clear.
AUv3, sequencer, no samples.
I'd love to hear more Drambonauts weigh in on this. Also important to ask though, even if Drambo can do all this, would there be an advantage in buying this ready-made package? Or can someone come out tomorrow or next week with a Drambo patch that does exactly the same thing? And how would the UI / UX experience compare?
The UI of this app looks great but I’m struggling to figure out what it offers me over something like Drambo:
. Per Track Step Length
. Per Track playback speed
. Deep Modulation racks
. 16 Tracks
. Auv3 hosting
. Deep set of native effects
. Deep Midi Routing
. Stand Alone, auv3, auv3 host, Sampler, Synth, Drum Machine
. Native Euclidean module
. Deep set of Step Components and randomization tools
The one advantage i see in this app is that it looks to be geared toward seeing all 4-5 lanes of your tracks at once with easy access to per track functions at a glance…
I’ll look deeper into the app. It looks cool for sure…but not sure how it improves my workflow without investigating deeper.
Fwiw, it’s good to see these highly focused performance oriented apps come to iOS from road warriors. We need more of this.
Apps like this show the true power and potential of iOS as a modular environment for creating music.
There’s a article in the latest Future Music magazine from the dev John Howes that tells you a bit about Strokes.
Couldn't agree more. But for desktop, that's a godsend for PC users that cannot host auv3 !
Look fwd for your impressions/comparison echo! thanks> @echoopera said:
Yeah on the desktop it’s a no brainer. It looks like a great midi sequencer with a focus on performance.
It reminds me of a fully realized Lemur/OSC utility for a Live performer who wants to quickly change things up in their drum sequencing…no one does it better than the Chemical Brothers when they go to that phat nasty place in their sets 😉
Checking this out now. Beautiful interface, very far from everything being invisible @u0421793, at least on a 12.9 inch ipad. And my eyes are not the best so that's saying something! Definitely an app I'll want to read the manual for but looks super powerful and I'm excited to dig in.
Right on. Yea I thought so but didn’t look it up so I wasn’t certain. Thanks
I haven't tried to get logic modules in Drambo to send gates to other tracks. I dunno if it's possible. From what I see, this is a big part of Strokes with clear overall visual feedback of what's triggering what. I'm interested, but does it swing?
Yeah, it seems to be highly focused and tuned for Live performance, which is a nice thing.
Can you drag across the note triggers to draw them in with a swipe or do you have to press each one individually?
There's a feature on the website that lets you separate each part with a click for an easier overview on what's what. I don't know if it helps you but, take a look.
These was a demo/tutorial on the devs YouTube channel that showed off two cool cool features
Weighting of strokes so that you don’t have to reprogram them to be more active or sparse
Pattern morph where a matrix with four corners and patterns are presented which allows you to morph - in varying degrees - between all four patterns
I wish they had an intro price on this
Yeah right. It seems cool, but I'm not ready to drop 20 quid on a sequencer just now...
Good point because “something” made me pump the brakes on my GAS feeling for this app after it dropped.
I'm interested to see how this can be used for melodic stuff, not just drums...
Great point! Me too!!
I did some experimenting with Gadget and Strokes (this sound like shite, just wanted to show possibility). Both in Stand Alone mode.
Now, having watched the video with the guy explaining, it seem Strokes need companions like e.g Mozaic. He have done stuff in Bitwig and Ableton to accompany Strokes functions that I have no clue how to replicate on iOS (Mozaic coders: heeelp!!).
I feel there are quite a few pieces missing for this to be real useful on iOS. I contacted the dev (about presets) and at least he was quick to reply.
Yeah - was able to create a piano sequence that sounds pretty good, but it was mostly through trial and error. I need to watch a thorough tutorial for the iOS version.
I don't think that exist yet. I wrote him today and asked for it and some presets. And also Ableton Link which surprisingly seem to be missing. I think this is one of the first apps I've seen not having that somewhat crucial (for iOS) element.
Good to know - so far, I am finding this app to be a little (sometimes very) opaque. The manual is not written for iOS users. I am really struggling with the dials on the right side. It is hard to tell if they are doing anything. I do like some of the cool CC stuff that you can send via the matrix.
Yeah, I gotta be honest with you and say that a refund is on my mind, if it's not too late(?). The missing Ableton Link make stand alone jam .. very boring if not unusable. I get a lot of crashes when using it as AUV3. He does explain the various buttons and dials in the video fairly well, and the scope as a visual aid is great. It's a petty because there is potential but its release is premature, I think. If the price had been a third I would patiently wait for updates but now, Idk.
Edit: I did apply for a refund, don't think I gonna get it though but we'll see.
