I’d like to see that also.
Has anyone used this for apps like Slammer, Ting, etc or any drum app? Wondering how it would do in AUM or Cubasis for finger drumming.
I tested it with Koala. It works well with the new y-axis velocity option and 16 pads. I hope there will be a preset system to switch between a drum and a note layout quickly..
IOS optimized latency early on; the long term huge IOS vs. Android disparity with regard to latency, ease of USB audio input device integration, etc. is the historical/classical issue responsible for the relative famine vs. oasis of music production on IOS vs. android you described, I think. In other words as the saying goes early bird gets the worm (at least initially).

Excited to see what you come up with; great devs make the world a better place to live (and make music) in.
Hey Samplix,
The presets with quick switches will definitely be the next feature to come. I just have to refactor and update the current state management solution beforehand. (I am using Riverpod, if anyone is interested)
Hang in there !! And thanks for suggesting and beta testing the y-axis velocity feature and spotting all the bugs there!! Really appreciate the help.
Thanks!
Ah gav. I have not forgotten about that idea. I think @UrbanNinja suggested the same thing
Hey Ive got the first test version with presets ready. anyone keen to be tester? just send me a PM with your email address
Wow - glad to be a tester!
i have uploaded the test version to apple and it should come through via testflight in the next 24h when it has passed the review !!
@Samplix of course you are still on board
edit: sorry... this app review is taking ages...
edit2: still waiting for review two days later... Come on, apple!
Thx to everyone that tested the latest version, especially @Samplix for the suggestions and for finding bugs!!
The first public release with Presets is out now. Enjoy !!
🙌
@anzbert this is such a great app, and I appreciate your enthusiasm and the ongoing development.
I would like to suggest to add a latch / toggle mode for the pads. Having sustain is great, but there is hardware that does not interpret CC 64 and relies on latching / toggling instead. And this would allow the pads to be used as on/off switches for all kinds of other functions (switching effects etc.)
My preferred toggle / latch behaviour would be like this:
Hi @catherder .
It's been fun getting some interest in the app and I enjoyed adding features again. Making notes toggleable would definitely be doable. I'll keep it in mind. But first priority now is to clean up the backend, because I am already on the verge to spaghetti code from continuously tacking things into it.
Once the code is a little cleaner and better documented, it will probably be easier for others to add features, hopefully taking some of the pressure of me. And I should be able to add functionality easier as well without making a mess.
I am rewriting the sending logic and the outdated state management classes right now. But afterwards I can probably tackle features again.
Definitely thanks for the support and the suggestions though!!
Feature freezes make total sense. Doing coding for a living, I often have to give updating, refactoring and last but not least documentation priority over the clients rushed request to "just" implement this "little" addon....
And I see you do this excellent work in your free time. Lots of thanks and keep the fun in your code.
Not sure why I can’t get midi into Beatpads on a single device, to see notes on grid.
I can achieve this with two devices and AUM’s network session, but no matter what ports show up in Beatpads I can’t get midi in
(midi out works fine)
Midi from Xequence is going to any sound source I choose, In or out of AUM. Just not to Beatpads?
Im perplexed.
Anyone have any ideas?
@catherder . If you are in that industry, you would definitely understand Yeah, it' all unpaid free time work and I would like to keep it joyful too
@tput73 . I am not sure man. I don't have xequence to test that. I don't seem to have any trouble receiving midi notes (tested via USB from my mac). Has someone else tried this in this forum ?
@anzbert & @tput73
I was able to send midi notes to Beat Pads from my Mac over USB. However I was not able to send midi notes from AUM to Beat Pads ("AUM Source" Output). I have tested the same with the Navichords App (standalone) and it works well with AUM as Input. I think this is what tput73 wanted to say.. (or not?)
Ok thx for testing this. I will investigate. It could be an issue with flutter_midi_command, which is the underlying library I am using for platform independent midi support. It's the most popular (and really the only) midi library in flutter.
If it is, I can maybe look into it and fix it myself, since I am learning swift right now anyway.
Thx a lot for letting me know about it. I'll look into it when I get some time. Just in the middle of moving overseas at the moment... It's a bit time consuming 😄
An unrelated update is coming tomorrow through the app store (or the day after), which should (hopefully) fix screen rotation issues on iOS 16 👍
Edit: @tput73 , I think I worked it out. I probably just need to create a virtual MIDI device, which should be easy. I'll look into it soon. Hang in there
Hi @anzbert
Would you consider adding a perfect fifths mode? Aka, a fifths string layout - so the way violins and cellos are strung.
I really like the perfect fourths mode but sometimes I also like to use a perfect fifths layout. It’s especially cool for anyone who plays Chapman Stick.
I should add that I absolutely love the app. It is really fantastic, and I heard about it right after finding out that ExpressionPad had been removed from the App Store, so it was perfect timing.
Hey @LeftyChris .
Perfect fifth I can easily add. I can do that shortly in a small update. Thx for the suggestion and the kind words!!
Otherwise, I am currently working on a bigger code refactor, which is still quite buggy, but should make adding functionality easier in the future, and it should make the code easier to read , once it works. So there should be that update maybe sometime in the next couple of months when I find some time.
Fantastic! I really appreciate that and I’m sure many other people will like having this option too. It’s my second favorite configuration for instruments like the Linnstrument (after the perfect fourths layout) and I recall reading on some forum that it’s the second most popular layout among Linnstrument players in general too.
I did want to say one other thing: You might want to consider changing (or maybe adding to) the name of the App. “Beat Pads” does not really express what it does very well - it makes it sound like it’s primarily a finger drumming app. I would have had no idea based on the app’s name that it plays notes and scales.
I am always in the market for apps like this because I love the grid keyboard format and I thought I had all such apps on the App Store but then I heard about Beat Pads from someone on this forum and I was really glad to have it. But my point here is that I had done •many• different App Store searches for grid keyboard apps (using tons of keywords) and Beat Pads never came up.
Of course it’s possible that there are other factors here I don’t know about that determine what comes up in an App Store search, but I suspect the fact that the app’s name is Beat Pads must be at least one reason it never came up in any of my searches. Anyway, FWIW, I thought I’d tell you. It’s such a cool app that I’d love for it to be something many people know about.
Awesome I think the virtual MIDI device would help. @Samplix about “AUM source”
Can’t wait to see the notes!
How does Beat Pads compare with your other apps? I have Geoshred, Xequence Keys/Pads and Velocity Keyboard. Wondering if/what it would add to my setup.

I can only compare it to geoshred, but what I find most interesting about it is, that you can use timbre and polypressure at the same time, with an xy pad that overlays every single pad, once you drag your fingers.
Great thanks! It’s definitely on my list.
@LeftyChris I am just uploading a hotfix with an added Perfect Fifth (Quint) Layout. Should be online in the next 48h. The next larger update is still a while away.
I totally agree with the app name sentiment. When I first made it, it was really just for finger drumming, but it evolved into a MPE midi note App.
I would love to relaunch it with a new name and suggestions are welcome!! It should be something that describes its function well and is unique enough to be searchable.
Would "MPE Midi Pads" be better, or is that not catchy enough ?! I need some creative support haha
thx everyone!!
PADology or …ist
I like it! I'll try and collect a few more suggestions and think of some names myself and then maybe have a vote?!!
Pls keep them coming
