I see you have a Polyend Play and an Oxi One. How are they as grid keyboards? Do you even use them as such? I know that’s not their main purpose but I thought I’d ask because I figured you must like grid keyboards since you’re using Beat Pads/Midi Poly Grid.

Polyend play, nope. OXI, kinda. Push 2 and Launchpad Pro for the grid keyboard. I’d not seen something like this on iPad and wanted to try. I’m a hybrid noodler and like having options between hard/software.

Interesting, thanks. I keep hoping that a major manufacturer will make a larger grid keyboard with velocity sensitivity - something that has 128 buttons/keys instead of 64 like the Push and the Launchpad have.

Does the Oxi One have velocity sensitivity? Some pages say it does and some say it does not. I’m thinking it probably doesn’t, though, if you’re choosing to use the Push and the Launchpad as keyboards instead of the Oxi.

TumbJam was the first music app that made me say Wow! I remember trying the electric guitar and being blown away. Getting that awesome vibrato just by shaking it, that was really something!

You can change the velocity sent through midi. No velocity sensitivity on the pads.

A pity the pads are not velocity sensitive on the Oxi One. I know that the Deluge doesn’t have them either. I guess the Linnstrument remains the only larger one (more than 64 pads) that does.

So many years later Jesse's apps are still in many respects beyond and/or without competition -I find myself ever back to them -again and again and again... It has long amazed me how much deeper TJ is "under the hood" than first meets the eye (e.g. pitch to midi conversion, adding your own instruments, etc. etc.. Thanks so much for keeping TJ and DJ working!!!

The main/only unfulfilled wish I can think of from Sonosaurus is they would make more apps!

    Hi @anzbert

Is Beat Pads/Midi Poly Grid an AU plugin for use in DAWs? I kind of assumed it was but it didn’t pop up in MultitrackStudio when I just tried to access it. I’m away from home and using a very old iPad so maybe that’s the problem.

If anyone else knows the answer to my question, please do post.

Anyway, here is a screenshot of MTS that shows where keyboard AUs normally show up:

I’m not sure if the dev is interested in adding AU or if it’s possible with the code. It is open source so maybe someone can/will. I think the app is great regardless and it’s pretty easy to route it to whatever app you want. For the price it’s really awesome and has lots of functionality.

Yes @HotStrange is right. I've coded the app as a Crossplatform project with Flutter(made by Google). That is why some iOS features are not available to me. That includes turning it into a AU or AUv3 extension, unfortunately. The advantage of my approach was that it is also usable with android devices. Not sure if that was the right call, but it is what it is. It's possythat the Flutter team will implement platform extension at some point, but that doesn't seem to be on their roadmap right now.

  • I appreciate that you made it cross platform as I am using it on Android (using 'midi connector free' app to connect it to SunVox).

Thanks for explaining it. I didn’t realize that was the situation. Actually, I got the Android version too on my son’s Samsung phone, which is great to have.

Is there some sort of workaround to be able to have Beat Pads/Midi Poly Grid control instruments inside a DAW? I’m so used to AU that I’ve kind of forgotten about the other options.

I assume that BP doesn’t have IAA either for the same reason it doesn’t have AU (?). I remember from many years ago using “core MIDI” to do something like this but now I can scarcely remember what that even means, let alone how to do it! Anyway, any help would be great. I’d love to be able to use BP with MTS.

You should be able to see the app listed on midi in whatever DAW you use. Or that’s how it is with standalone midi within AUM. If not you should be able to connect to the AU you’re using and still record what you play with Beat Pads. If you give me a couple hours I can check this when I get home to verify. Which DAW are you gonna be using?

Do you have Audio Evolution? If not, perhaps Auria? I have used both though it’s been a while since I used Auria. Thanks so much!

Incidentally, MTS is really excellent. I’m sure you have an established workflow and don’t need another DAW, but FWIW the MIDI editing in MTS is so nice.

Thanks! I’m using MultitrackStudio, though currently I’m using it on a very old iPad. I’ll be back with my normal iPad tomorrow.

I love AudioShare but I’ve actually never used AUM.

I don’t have MTS so I can’t test it there, but I can give it a shot in a different DAW if you’d like. I’ve always been able to get it going in AUM easily though.

Those are the 3 I don’t have unfortunately 😆 I use Cubasis 3, Zenbeats, and recently Logic but 90% in AUM. I mostly just use DAWs to master stems and add little finishing touches here and there.

It’s midi only. No AU support.

Thanks for letting me know. That’s too bad though maybe he’ll want to add AU at some point.

Thanks for explaining it. I didn’t realize that was the situation. Actually, I got the Android version too on my son’s Samsung phone, which is great to have.

Ah, lol! Thanks for the offer, though, I appreciate it. I have looked at Zenbeats on the App Store but actually couldn’t figure out the difference between it and Zentracker. I don’t need another DAW anyway.

Zentracker is basically like a hardware multitrack recorder for other hardware gear through an interface. It doesn’t host AUV3 or IAA at all. Zenbeats is a full fledged DAW with all the capabilities of other iOS DAWs.
