Oh… ok I was originally getting it for my daughter but now I kinda want it for me 😂

I have a Waldorf iridium…Kernel mode is like fm to the 100th power… and it just looks amazing doing it unlike kq Dixie which neeeeeds help cosmetically and how it handles files.
1 vote for dixie, due to ease of use and insane amount of carts/presets to start from. Nambu is ace though, but more nuanced kinda.
I don't think I'd say Dixie wins on ease of use...saving patches into carts is very confusing to many.
Tera Pro (with FM7 synth module) beats Dixie on UI and patch management.
But is more CPU hungry
IceGear opened up my eyes regarding FM synthesis, before that, everything was just a reimagined DX-7. After Redshrike, Mersenne, and hybrid Lagrange, with Nambu, Satoshi sealed the deal for me. Also, SugarBytes Aparillo is such a monster FM synth. Dixie is my go-to for browsing DX-7 ROMs.
My vote goes to Nambu.
Yes Tera can import but not export. I love FM synths, get them all. Dixie is tops for simplicity. It makes understanding FM synthesis super easy.
Does it, though? The UI looks like a Geometry class assignment. It could use a major overhaul to simply the process of patch creation.
Works for me, but everyone has their preferences. It works best first and foremost as a clone of tx802, tx816, and dx7/tx7.
KQ Dixie is as simple as it gets with almost every single DX7 parameter instantly available, zoomable envelopes etc.
It's not as complicated as it looks when you give it a bit of time.
The cartridge management can be a trad tricky though...
The lack of a friendly UI is why I had no hesitation when it came to deciding to bring all of my imported FM patches over to Tera Pro and I've never really looked back at KQ since. To each their own.
KQ has the big advantage to control a real DX graphically.
It doesn‘t magically implement realtime control on the hardware (of course), but at least changed parameters are updated with the next trigger note.
What would happen if the question was posed in this manner?
“if you could have only one FM synth for iOS, and you can pick any of the ones available, which one would it be?”
Because I have hardware… I will pick Aparillo, runner up Nambu.
Nambu for me
Yes, Nambu to choose to only one. Most versatile. It's the Opsix for iOS.
The only thing it lacks is dx7 sysex import, which would make it perfect.
Opsix on desktop now has this, and it's amazing for sound design and exploration.
As others have said Nambu may have to be my choice. There’s just nothing else quite as powerful. OP-L, KQ Dixie, and Omega are runners up.
NFM for creating sounds (it's the only one with free & easy routing between operators including feedback) and KQ Dixie for layering DX7 patches.
I like Dixie a lot but I agree that its preset management is ugly. I've recently tried to make a best-of preset collection from many DX7 sysex imports and I gave up.
If I had to pick one, I’d go with Dixie. DX/TX compatibility is big for me. And I actually like its UI.
That said, I haven’t had a chance to really dive into Nambu, so maybe I’ll feel differently once I do. But I’m glad I don’t have to make that choice! 🙂
After playing with Nambu for like 3hrs last night, it’s beautiful sounding to be honest. I’m not surprised though, all the synths from Iceworks have some greatness in em.
They really are wonderful. Iceworks and Bram Bos are my two favorite devs by a LONG shot and quality is tops. That’s where I make all my best patches
Phasemaker hasn’t been updated in 5 years…is it stable? It’s the cheapest option, it seems, so I’m interested but I’m hesitant. I’ve never had a problem with Bram apps but iOS has had a lot of changes in the last 5 years. So it’s more the iOS of it all that concerns me
Still works great.
This thread just made me notice that Obsidian & Caustic only have 3 operators. It would be cool if the dev adds 1 or 3 operators extra to Obsidian. Unfortunately he says he’s not adding anymore to NanoStudio 2. Wish FM4 for iPad was still around. Looks like that’s no longer available.
Yeah I think NS2 and Caustic are both basically frozen in time. NS2 will probably get maintenance updates though.
Omega is a 4 op FM synth I believe and it sounds great!
Why the almost daily updates?
KQ Dixie? There was a pretty major update the other day but it apparently introduced some bugs (that I personally have not seen); the dev has been on top of things fixing issues
11 updates in 2 weeks…
It’s still better than zero updates
