On a related note, Babylon Berlin came into my life just as I was getting into this old, astounding collaboration between Ute Lemper and Michael Nyman. (Lemper must’ve been in her 20s at the time, but my lord, the gravitas!)

It’s just been rereleased in 4K on Blu-Ray, and as someone who skipped that era of physical media, I’m thinking of getting a Blu-Ray player just so I can watch it in all its glory.

Having missed Babylon Berlin when it first came out, I’ve just started watching Season 1 and am utterly mesmerised by this song.

Besides figuring out what makes it stylistically compelling, I’m also wondering why I can have this song on repeat for days without it getting old — for reasons other than the fact that I think it’s good.

Partly I think it’s because structurally, it’s a tease. There’s no actual climax in terms of a release (he said). I was thinking earlier that if I had a criticism of the mix or the dynamics of the playing itself, it’s that the second time they repeat the prechorusy refrain (which is itself largely a repeated line), it’s pretty much at the same intensity as the first.

But maybe this is the key: maybe there’s no “real” chorus, just this delicious plateau (erm) of what I’d usually think of as a prechorus. Like the rising figure in the prechorus of Tina Turner’s “Simply the Best”, but without anywhere to go. The musical version of edging. So I’m chasing satisfaction after being left hanging!

Nice chat with Paul McCartney and Sean Lennon reminiscing about his dad, shame it wasn’t longer or a series as it’d be lovely for them to go deeper but lovely nonetheless…

    my rigmarole:

The intro of MILLION DOLLAR BABY was apparently inspired by M.C. Mack's "Ez Come Ez Go".
(I learned about this topic on Reddit.)

Tommy Richman - MILLION DOLLAR BABY (Official Music Video)

The intro of "Ez Come Ez Go" is by Project Pat.

M.C. Mack "EZ Come EZ Go" (Official Audio)

So, one might say that in this DJ Paul video, there is a mashup of ‘something like Project Pat’ and ‘Project Pat himself’. (Sorry if I have misunderstood something about this topic. In that case, you can call me a fake news spreader.)

  • This entire album INDIGO by RIVER TIBER

  • I don’t think anyone could ever sing this song as well as Chris Cornell but it I think this is an amazing cover and tribute.

They're not doing anything new, but they are pretty good at it.

Two masterpieces from the past. At this time, there was less censorship than today

    And a third one

  • I mean, these haven't changed in a couple of years, still on constant rotation with small additions here and there

Jurassic 5' album Quality Control started my love
    (This one's the title track)

Gift of Gab has destroyed my creative views and given me the sounds out loud I've had in my head (with a lot more)

This is off Next Logical Progression, potentially my favorite album of all time
    Track- Everything is Fine
(The second verse, Lyrics Born just melts my ears with the delivery)

And I don't have a specific track, but J Dilla's Donuts has been on regular play addition for the past week for inspiration. Yes, I was aware of his impact, but hadn't listened for whatever reason. Holy balls... Fully grok'd on this shiz

So many concepts have just clicked... Time for the integration process!

  • Ty Segall :: Love Rudiments
    It’s good.

  • The new Beat tour featuring music from King Crimson with Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, Steve Vai, and Danny Carey

  • I heard this on a local junior college radio station, WDCB.

  • Not music, but there's some clever music in it...

Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall classic form in a 1950's radio drama. https://otr.warehouse13.freeddns.org/Bold Venture/

"Humphrey Bogart plays the part of Slate Shannon hotel owner and owner of a boat called the Bold Venture. He was ready to rescue a friend in need or hunt down and enemy. The setting for the series is Havana, Cuba. Other regular cast members include his wife Lauren Bacall who plays the part of Sailor Duval and Jester Hairson who plays the part of King Moses a calypso singer. ..."

My Dad was an obsessive old-time radio collector. I've made his collection available at https://otr.warehouse13.freeddns.org. I stumbled across this gem while cleaning up and normalizing the files and found it majorly entertaining. Quick 30 minute meals of pure classic Bogey and Bacall.

  • One of my favorite singers. I have no idea what the words mean. Possibly I'd enjoy it less if I understood. But what a voice!

One of my favorite big band arrangers, and one of the first--along with Gerry Mulligan--to make extensive use of counterpoint in a big band context. Everything he does is excellent. Good tenor player too.
