I thought this synth sounded amazing on release but was unstable as all get out. Tried every update and still crashed in every host. Been holding out hope for the better part of a year for stability updates.

App listing is gone in the US store for sure rn.

Probably my biggest let down of any synth purchase. I loved the interface and how everything is laid out but every time I touch something it breaks.

    Interesting.

    Any reproducable crash?
    How?

just trying to use it like any other synth au. load it on a track in drambo. change a preset, automate something, press play, die.
loopy pro and nodes projects will never load with butter synth open, crashes every time, reload it, hope it sticks and doesn't crash again. press play transport, die.
play something else next to it, die. attach an effect, die.

app is just horrible imo and over a year of hoping for stability with next to no updates makes me salty like no other has in this space. no other auv3 gives me this many problems, not even close.

Which device were you using? I’ve never really tried hosting in Drambo but I think others in the testing group did.

2018 iPad Pro 11" and iPhone 13, similar results on both and in LP and Nodes

What hardware and OS? I have experienced occasional crashes but nothing like you are describing? What you are describing doesn't seem to be the typical experience.

2018 iPP and iPhone 13, last half of iOS 16, all of 17 lifespan.

I gave up trying Butter Synth early this spring so maybe something has changed between then and now that I missed? I try to keep my eyes on it.

I cannot reproduce this in any host.

Only tested iPad Air 3, latest iPadOS.

Maybe you should uninstall ButterSynth and all such host Apps and reinstall them.
Make sure to start all of them once BEFORE hosting anything.

Might not be able to reinstall atm if it’s off the store 😐 hopefully it comes back and gets supported

    I feel what you mean.
I've got such type of experience with Synthmaster2: such a great synth, wasted by the fact that it crashes so easily.
Sadly made me give it up and regret the purchase.

But in that case it's an experience shared by many.

Maybe there's hope in your case.
There was a BS update this March.

Still unclear why the app & dev disappeared from the store tho.

I wonder if something went wrong and corrupted the install -- I have never hard problems like that (iPad 6 -- which is no powerhouse). I have occasionally had crashes but not many. Constant crashes makes me think that somehow the install went bad. I have had that happen with a few apps over the years.

Did you ever completely delete the app, reboot and reinstall?

@Kirnu Any information about the missing ButterSynth App in AppStore?

    Thanks

Maybe it's a regional App Store issue depending on where you are? I downloaded it a few hours ago from the US App Store for USD $19.99

It's gone now from the US app store. You must have just beat the cutoff.

You are correct. It is indeed currently absent from the US App store. Strange coincidence, I just barely downloaded it yesterday.

I’ve had it a few weeks i might request a refund because its buggy and mostly unstable. If you aren’t saving every second you risk losing all your patch work

OK I will be sure to do a stress test. Since I bought it yesterday, I've only had time to use it briefly on a track with a preset. I haven't built a custom patch yet.

  • I followed and was excited about this app. Did not have the problems others seemed to have. Hope we hear some news, and it’s back soon.

  • I’ve never known this where half the people using an app find it barely usable due to instability, and the other half don’t have problems. There has to be a simple explanation.

I’m in the don’t have problems camp and absolutely love BS - I have at least one instance in every track.

  • I was going to use Buttersynth in a Cubasis 3 project the other day. I opened it up, found a sound, played a few chords and then it crashed. It wouldn’t open up again. Spinning circle of death. I had to restart Cubasis 3 before I could open it, upon which it crashed immediately. A few times round this cycle and I moved on to a different synth. There are not enough hours in a minute. I meant to report the issue but it slipped my mind. Now I’ve seen this thread I’ll get on with it, but I’ll go back and see if I can recreate the issue first.

I’m with you on that. It’s not just Buttersynth, it’s a bunch of apps that for some are ”barely usable” but for others are top notch and they make wonderful stuff with them without any issues.

IMO it’s in most cases not the apps… it’s the human individual using them. Throw in your experience, your personal workflow, how well you ”click” or ”like” the app and people’s seemingly constant needs to have every single bit of functionality. This is often regardless of if it is used or not, it just ”has to be there” otherwise the whole app is useless. I believe in using all that is actually working instead of focusing on what is NOT working. Sure, feedback to developers is great and needed but…🤷‍♂️.

    Oh well, YMMV.

This or Tera Pro is the no 1 synth on iOS for me. It's disappeared from the UK app store too. Hope that doesn't mean it's gone to app heaven. Anyone know what's going on?

Tbf I can definitely be guilty of pushing for that “one missing feature” 😅

But I’m also very willing to persevere with an app and talk to a dev, especially one with as much promise as BS. It just seems odd that it’s such a crashfest for some folks. Around its release I admittedly had crashing issues but that stopped a long time ago.

  • I can’t find ButterSynth in the App Store either. (EU)

For me, from time to time I had to delete and reinstall the app because of weird CTDs, but everything else works just fine. I’m rarely using this synth, so... 🤦‍♂️

  • I requested a refund. Got denied. Replied with my explanation and I’m awaiting Apple.
I normally would never request a refund because i know it sucks for the devs.
But if you left us high n dry with a broken unsupported app i don’t feel bad.
I can’t use it, and was hoping for the dev to fix it or at least tell us that it can’t be

  • Any update on this?

It was difficult to find contact info on the kirnu website, but I’ve emailed a support address I found to ask if the dev is aware of the absence of the app in the store.

I noticed this foreboding thread on their KVR subforum re: their arpeggiator app:

    I requested a refund.
    Got denied.
    Disputed that, got denied.
Spent 45 mins on the phone with apple support, got denied.

Basically there is nothing protecting us end users from anyone creating an app that is broken, making some money, pulling the app and getting away with it scott free.

If an app is buggy and broken at first, i totally understand. I reached out to the dev as did others here on this forum, and the response was to pull the app and ghost us. at this point in time that is all That I conclude.

I told the lady on the phone at Apple that I was going to create an app that was broken sell it for $15 pull it and disappear and she just laughed haha.

I don’t understand why a huge copy like Apple let this happen and denies refunds to their loyal customers. I’ve spent thousands of dollars on the App Store and only request a refund when it’s absolutely necessary.

Going forward, I will probably purchase apps from Only our trusted developers. There’s nothing protecting us end users from buying apps and Apple refuses to give refunds on all almost every single one.

Basically all we can do is see an app That we might like and purchase it and Hope it works because if it does not, we just lose our money.

I do wish the App Store would change their policies and allow trials or something , or more developers would do the partial app, where you only get some features of the app without a full purchase. At least then we can see if it loads without constant crashes like butter synth does.

A buttery smooth heist i say lol

  • Yeah I’m not pointing fingers here, simply curious about the future of a valued tool which i’ll have to substitute out of my live set if it is no longer supported. I hope the dev is in good physical and mental health and this is all a quick admin issue to sort out.

I would hope so as well.
Just based on what i know and the crashing of the app i requested it as its not useable on my end.

  • Id rather have the app than the 20$ obviously which is why i purchased it to begin with

In such a case, he would not reply and also not be able to renew the developer account.

I still have hope that things will settle down.

I was thinking this too. He’s not replying on Discord either. Hope he’s ok!

Update for those still left wondering...

BS re-released a few days ago at $6 sale, no app update, unfortunately.
On Discord Aarto posted about re-release and something about removing a BS patch, again unfortunately no comment on anything related to present bugs.

On a personal note, even at $6 probably going to pass this one up, if nothing else because I don't think Aarto is doing enough living up to people's reasonable expectations to deserve my business (yet).

  • Oh you posted the same thing here as well. Are you the same username on Discord? Will see if I can help with bugs you’ve reported.

I’ve got it with the deal and I’m surprised how it runs stably (Auv3 in AudioBus or BAM). I’m on ipad Air 3 (ios 15).
    It’s quite a powerful app.
Used it for 2 days with no issues or crashes for now.

Only an issue with notes (or pitch) changing randomly sometimes, on one patch in BAM; I need to figure out if it’s a bug in the host tho. [BAM issue: reported to devs]

However the developer explained on social media that the removal happened because he was in vacation and didn’t check emails.
Although, yes, I understand the expectation for bugfixes (especially if crashing), especially on a young product.

If it can help, try to keep memory consumption low; often the reason for crashes is RAM usage.
