  • Looks like 16.6 2nd public beta fixed the lightning CCK issue. iPhone 12 Pro and 2nd gen iPad Pro now charge and connect to all peripherals thru adapter.
I can finally think straight again!

I'm no Windows hater, but I can't for the life of me think why any musician who uses any iOS device would consider anything but a Mac.

I would not have said that three years ago before I got a MacBook Pro. The relative convenience of the integration with iOS is just too good to pass up.

Well because if you also do anything else as well they are so many advantages to not using a Mac :)

I can't argue with you there, at least for business. For home use though, I never find a thing that I can't do far better on my refurb 2015 MacBook Pro that I got for peanuts, than I ever could with my more expensive Windows Notebooks, and the integration with the iOS workflow is great for me. The only time I bust out the Windows Notebook these days is to try to figure out how to help Windows users to do stuff and fix problems. 😂

Yeah if it's just a small use case of just working between ipad and Mac it makes sense but as soon as you start to incorporate lots of other hardware, especially if you do video, machine learning etc then Windows is much more widely used, also because you have far more control over the drivers since you choose what hardware goes in your machine. The only Macs appealing to me are the low end ones now :)

My Mrs has gone through at least 5 Windows laptops in the time I’ve had my (still used) 2012 MBP.

I started off on Macs, then used Windows desktops alongside Macs for 20 years due to work compatibility. Three years ago my main Windows desktop died and to avoid the horrors of the new Windows OS, I replaced it with a 16” MBP, and now, Mac Mini.

I’d rate the Mini as the best computer I’ve ever had - no going back to Windows now!

Right but if they died that means you must have bought bad PCs, it's not the OS, it's the components. You can build them. I'd love it if Apple made Macs more appealing as work tools but I would have to buy both Mac and PC to do my work effectively unfortunately.

I can attest that my Win 7 desktop still works well and if it ever needs a repair, it will be fairly easy to find a qualified tech to repair it. There are some great music software that is PC only (Tsugi Audio, Sound Forge Pro, Vegas for instance). iCloud and notes can be run on a PC.

On the other hand, I love my new Mac Mini M1and there are great software that is Mac only (Logic Pro, Screenflow, and others).

But even better yet, there is even more software that I use that is cross-platform (Wavelab, iZotope RX, Reaper, Novum, Zebra 2, NI products, Pianoteq, etc.).

But coming back to the topic, I got my first iPad in 2012 and I have always been very cautious before updating iOS. I am still on iOS 15 on my iPad 9th gen.

I’m talking about laptops: “My Mrs has gone through at least 5 Windows laptops in the time I’ve had my (still used) 2012 MBP.”

They were well-specced Dells and HP’s. In fact just before buying my first MacBook Pro in 2012 I checked Windows competition in the same price bracket, but the quality just wasn’t there at that time.

My 2012 MBP is built like a tank, 11 years later still going strong. The keyboard on the Mrs’s first Dell laptop went on day one, when she eventually got it back pretty much everything else went wrong and so she binned it.

I can’t comment on current Windows laptops (though the ones she has from work are just more plastic crap, and she hates them), but a decade ago they couldn’t touch a Mac for build quality (though I know they also went through a dodgy keyboard phase a few years ago).

Any iPad Pro 10.5 (2017) user who can report? Is my iPad too slow for iOS 16?

I have an iPad 6 and noticed no performance issues when upgrading from iOS 15

I got the impression that there is very little in iPadOS 16 that would be useful on this model (which I also have).

Some consider security updates pretty useful.

My Air 4 was noticeably slower for a number of days after updating from v15. It’s settled down now, but still not as quick as it was.

Unless you use apps (like Audulus 4 ) that require ios 16

Oops. Seems like it's the belkin adapter that won't take audio, but it takes power 🤔🤔

Sorry to hear that. I always recommend only apple cck, and only from Apple Store or reputable store in Apple packaging. There are so many look alikes and knock offs on Amazon that try to fool you into thinking it’s Apple it’s almost impossible to ensure it’s authenticity. @jakoB_haQ did a video on only getting the apple cck a little while back, he explains the reasoning, but the big one is running into issues with anything other then the apple cck. Also I think it’s Especially important since it’s the literal linchpin of any iOS set up using external devices.

Long gone are the days when an iOS update breaks things.

I think Windows told iOS to stay in its lane…

  • It's working out to be another 2 GB of storage gone with no noticeable benefits. Probably should have stayed on 15.

iOS 16 doesn't consume 2GB additional space over iOS 15. There must be something else going on.

Well, it did for me. I always check my storage before and after. FWIW, I wasn't on the latest version of 15.

Ironically I gained about 6gb after updating from v15 - must have cleared out some cache, or system files I didn’t know about.

  • @monz0id Yeah, I saw your previous comment. It gave me hope. Congrats! 👍

  • I have 2 iPad mini 5s and was dismayed to see my camera connection adapters no longer charging, therefore making it impossible to use my controllers and audio interface after updating to iOS 16.5. I tried to get some info from apple support to no avail, and apparently downgrading is more impossible than time travel. Then I figured to go to the Genius Bar couldn’t hurt and they (and I) were surprised to find that using a 20 watt USB C charger solved the issue. (Of course I needed a USB C to lightning cable too). One of the people there said that the techies at apple were aware of the problem but could not say if or when it would be resolved. So…you can either wait for the next update which may or may not fix the CCK problem, or buy a 20 watt USB C charger and cable. At least it worked for me…(although I will not argue about who should pay for said charger and cable)….they were helpful and solved the problem. Back up and running…so far.
Everyone with this problem should probably at least send a bug report anyway (strength in numbers) in hopes of the cheaper solution.

This is a known issue much-discussed here in AB Forum. People with the 16.6 beta say that the beta solves the issue. It is supposed to be released soon.

  • 16.6 solved it on both my iPads for sure

  • How is Auria pro working on the latest OS?

  • Do I have to update to 16.5 before 16.6 will become visible?

  • Apple used to be king of the hill. Now they are only making the best touch/tablet type computers (ipads), but they aren’t making the best computers the way they used to. Cook just isn’t jobs, and apple never will be what it could be or should be unless jobs was immortal. They used to also make the best phones but now they are just as unsecured as android . At least Android is open, as someone mentioned the apple prison : it’s a cycle where you can’t stop once you start. I regret my MacBook and iPhone but I love my iPad.

That’s of course my opinion and you’re open to your own, but like one or two people said I’d rather go with a windows laptop /computer if I could do it over. But what’s bought is bought and I hate reselling and then rebuying something new (and windows 8 -11 suck too ha I think Linux or another OS are the way to go now)

No. That's never the case with iOS updates. Checking for updates always pulls the latest. If you go to settings > general > Software Update it should show up when it's available.

Really? In my experience so far, Windows 10 is great for making music, as well as gaming and a number of other things too. Windows 11 doesn’t look as appealing to me, mind you. But that’s fine - I’ll just keep ignoring that one.

Anyway, as for iOS / iPadOS 16.5, I’ve had no issues at this stage (iPad and iPhone).

  • Does anyone know if the Safari tab order bug (opening tab groups in random order) is fixed in 16.5? Anyone on the 16.6 beta that knows if it’s fixed there?

  • Just updated my 2nd Gen Ipad pro 12.9 from 15.7 to 16.5 and now it won't charge the battery from the Apple wall wart! Anyone else got this issue?
