Are eyebrow slits still cool 2023?
The eyebrow slit, popular in the '90s and inspired by R&B, rock, and hip-hop music artists, has made a comeback. The social media platform TikTok rebooted the edgy eyebrow slit trend in 2020-2023, which resonated with a lot of people and has become one of the most popular eyebrow trends of the year.

This is why I frequent this place... what other music forum keeps me informed on eyebrow trends?

And yeah, that video was more of a hit job on Behringer than anything particularly insightful regarding Moog.

Influencers seem to be ganging up on Behringer at the moment, this is the third Iā€™ve seen.

I donā€™t know if anyone is ā€œganging upā€ on Behringer, but with their CEO it seems like theyā€™ve certainly earned the ire. Itā€™s one thing to offer knockoffs of old synths and quite another thing to aggressively attack customers.

Apparently Behringer was offered Moog and turned down the purchase due to Moog being a luxury brand, out of the price range of Behringer customersā€¦

inMusic isnā€™t exactly known as a holder of luxury brands. I suspect theyā€™ll attempt to meet Behringer on their terms with new products, eroding Behringerā€™s market dominance and possibly undermining their own seal of quality at the same time.

    Behringer and Moog:
    https://synthanatomy.com/2023/10/ex-moog-ceo-mike-adams-offered-uli-the-moog-brand-to-buy-says-behringer.html

There are limited number of companies which couldā€™ve bought Moog out. Whatā€™s the point of Behringer admitting theyā€™re so low-rent they couldnā€™t afford Moog? Makes them look bad, not Moog.

Knowing Behringer they love to give the finger, as you said above, so it could be possible, some of their past and present moves defy logic.

Behringer bashing is fair. There's plenty to bash.

But Behringer did not kill off Moog. Moog ended up where they are because there is no longer enough market for their products at the prices needed to sustain production the way they chose to carry it out. It would have happened whether Behringer was selling cheaper knockoffs or not. It's wrong to conclude that the people who would buy a Behringer ripoff would have bought a high cost Moog were the cheap alternative not available. Maybe a few, but I doubt enough to make a difference.

Accurate. There is a limited market for high-end brands in music. Most musicians are not very wealthy.

  • I would buy a Moog DFAM over a Behringer Edge if the DFAM had MIDI. The knobs are waaaay better on the DFAM, like not even close. Build quality...much better. But you'd think, in this day and age, Moog could have added MIDI support. These are the reasons why, imo, Moog is behind. The quality of life additions just aren't there.

Strangely I started looking at Behringer like a hardware alternative to the Arturia V Collection the other day. Beh gear is almost cheap enough to be plugins, well at least some of it. Lol

Plugins donā€™t get bashed like hardware homages šŸ¤·šŸ½ā€ā™‚ļø

Honestly, Iā€™d like to see Moog adopt precision motor control over their knobs and settings so automation could be implemented, in the same way some new hardware synth competitors are implementing.

I agree, but still it would appear to be a combined concerted effort by several influencers.

I don't think it is coordinated, but frankly behringer deserve whatever they get after the way they treated Peter Kirn, among much other disgusting behaviour

Behringer is already selling knockoffs of most of Moog's line anyway. What do they need Moog for?

    New video: Why Moog Died

Cool video, I bought a Moog Sub 25 when it came out, Iā€™m already seeing it sell for $1200 new ( $1199 ) up from the $850 I bought it new for, I think itā€™s due more so to inflation than the company being sold at this time. But Iā€™m not gonna lie, I also bought a Behringer Poly D because thereā€™s no way in hell I can afford a real Moog Model D right now. šŸ¤·šŸ½ā€ā™‚ļø

In practice, though, itā€™s less of an issue than youā€™d think, I suspect.

NB Iā€™m not saying they wouldnā€™t have sold more DFAMs if they had MIDI - Iā€™m sure they would have - but (based on a completely unscientific impression based on YT and IG videos), I doubt most people who own one donā€™t also have other gear able to send analogue clock to it. Such as a Mother-32 or Subharmonicon, or modular, or an SQ-1 or whatever, so you just send MIDI to one of those and clock it from there if you need to sync to a DAW or whatever.

So, while Iā€™m broadly in agreement with your point - it seems an odd omission, bearing in mind the M32 and SubH both have MIDI - itā€™s not a huge issue in practice. Though it would be if you had a setup that was MIDI right through.

One argument against MIDI, though, is that you can do interesting things by modulating the clock signal - Iā€™ve no idea how that would integrate with MIDI clock, which seems to be designed to be stubbornly regular.

  • Cvpal clones are an easy and pretty cheap way to give Moog stuff an in to midi but can be a little noisy with the usb port as the power source. Sometimes I just use a TENS unit as a clock source and sync things up by ear when I need my lfos

The unfortunate thing with youtube is that the algorithm tends to like longer videos. Probably at least partly because they tend to have more ads. Youtube tends to punish people who donā€™t consistently publish their format in a similar style, length etc. i actually much prefer Twitter as a platform currently - much more likelihood that all your kinds of different content get eyes. YouTube restricts written content, polls etc, to your community, for example. I think YouTube is in for a shock regarding how much of its ass is going to get eaten by Twitter if it doesnā€™t up its game. Same with Insta with its absolutely horrendous user experience when crafting posts, lack of basic functionality like clickable links in posts etc. Twitter is the best place to be posting stuff now, hands down, though they also need to deal with bugs, the fact that some Twitter Premium functionality is only available on the desktop site, not on the apps etc. Threads is better than Insta, but it doesnā€™t offer the long form posting or formatting options that Twitter Premium does, and it just died a death very quickly after launch. But yeah, despite a rocky takeover and despite that fact I think he is really an asshole, Elon Musk has made some excellent changes over at Twitter.

Pretty sure he does that for a living so wouldnā€™t make much sense to release a 30 second video. Most YouTubers I follow make longer videos. Hainbach could sum up all his videos in 30 seconds by saying ā€œthis is coolā€ and then playing it for 25 seconds, but seeing 15 minutes of him taking through its paces is part of the fun.

An important role of the media has always been to call things out. Do you think that ā€˜non-mainstreamā€™ media does not hold its own trials? They do. They only cry trial by media when the media happens to be saying something they donā€™t agree with. Otherwise theyā€™re absolutely fine with it. Pure hypocrisy

You are quite correct, I could cancel them, but thatā€™s not for me, I like to listen to as many possible opinions as I can, gather as many facts as possible, before I form a position. No hypocrisy, no conjecture, just a reasonable formed opinion. If thereā€™s a herd to follow my first question is why.

Itā€™s not the length of the video as much as how much some creators draw out the length when they donā€™t have enough to say in the time it runs for. Thatā€™s a shame that YouTube encourages this, as for me I would rather see a video based on what the creator thinks is worth saying, and not that plus a lot of padding.
