This song has been given the title, Worse Song Ever, before. Mind you, it’s been a few years.

“I left the cake out in the rain…”. Huhhh???

Call me an outsider but this song is bad ass…..!! I didn’t pay attention to the lyrics lol

The great songwriter, Jimmy Webb, said he has no idea what the lyrics mean, and admits they’re pretty bad. Musically, I agree with you. Good melody, chord harmony, but then there’s that darn cake with its icing melting out in the rain. Haha The critics had a field day with the lyrics. But then, critics criticize, not praise, usually.

The Kars for Kids jingle is devil's music.

Oh, come on. Everybody knows the Blues is the Devil’s music. ;)
Muddy Waters mom even said so, so it must be true.

"Someone left the cake out in the rain" is one of my alltime fav lines.

It is up there with "the movement you need is on your shoulder" from Hey Jude.

Growing up I loved the weird lyrics of Yes and T.Rex.

I wonder what you'd get if you crossed the styles of both Yes and T. Rex... "T. Yes"?

How about Guns N' Roses' entire "Chinese Democracy" album?

I’ve been a GnR fanboy since 1988 and CD is a fantastic album to me. I think if we are talking about bad songs the only way is to list songs that are beyond being liked. This for example.

    Yes, so bad.

But wait! She's an "outsider" with a sad backstory so the song must be special with an authenticity that skilled musicians envy...right?

Sorry guys - I don't buy into the "outsider"sales pitch.

If the song is sung out of tune or played out of time it is bad. Doesn't matter if the artist is an outsider or ABBA (not that ABBA sing out of tune or played out of time).

A quick Wiki check reveals the images in the song relate to the break-up of a love affair Webb had. Macarthur park was where the lovers met. The cake in the rain was real, as were the other images.
There’s a singular vividness in the lyrics here. A great song. (Anyone having problems with these lyrics is advised to stay away from late period Scott Walker.)

8th best selling single in the UK in 1984.

We laugh about it now but we had to suffer this back in the day. I honestly could not believe it.
This was released in the same year as the mighty Juno 106. Amazing.

It was apparently one of the major influences on this:

Every time I pass through the MacArthur station in Oakland on BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), my brain starts singing, "MacArthur BART is melting in the dark...". Maynard Ferguson did a great 10-minute instrumental version.

I don't know if the Shaggs really qualify as outsider art, given how reluctant they were to make it. Is the father the outsider artist? Is the whole family, considered as a collective? It is not a particularly clear-cut instance. I don't have the same qualms about, say, Daniel Johnston.

  • This thread proves that one person’s rot is another person’s treasure.

Has there been 1 single song that everyone agrees is bad? Still waitinig……

Another outsider with an authenticity that skilled musicians envy.

The movement he needs is not on his shoulder...

That brings back memories, I’ll have that chorus in my head for days now. Not sure if the B side track would be allowed anymore.

Was the b-side about South Africans?

    Hello,

The MacArthur BART station's association with the song adds a unique touch to the daily commute.

  • Hold my beer, weird World Trade Centre tribute thing…

  • Not even bad.

    Just a vintage.
