    • ableton zenbeats… i just couldn’t stand them, i don’t even understand what I’m looking at or think of music in this way, i feel confined to blocks and can’t see any kind of timeline. I understand this is my perspective coming from being a songwriter or musician or whatever and not loop based. I know ableton was huge that’s why I tried it but even though it had the timeline view it was geared up for loops view or whatever it’s called, i really really hate that. Lol uh. Also looked like a pre club bar. No thanks. Felt like i was stuck sat next to Norman cook using it desperately wanting to leave.

If you didn't find the timeline in Ableton and Zenbeats, then you really didn't look at either of them very carefully. Both offer the alternative of working timeline or clip based modes - or both.

    Glad you like Logic tho.

I have found all daws to be a major block for me in terms of making music. Over years and years this is. I open them and no matter how long I’ve been using everything is counter intuitive and I forget how to do things constantly.

Logic ipad is the first daw i just retain everything and once I find something out, it’s pretty natural. It’s so nice to use.

The following is all my personal preference and I fully get this can be wildly different. I’m a singer songwriter musician. I want the production side simplified but with complexity under the hood for me to expand into. I a, tactile i want to use a daw almost like an instrument where things feel natural.

I think workflow is incredibly subjective.

    I literally HATED using:

    • cubasis: looks like a pre club bar ableton type gui. Just hated being in it. Everything felt stilted an unnatural workflow wise

    • Auria. Should be perfect for me. Wasn’t. Hated it. Crashed constantly. Awful menus. Everything counter intuitive

    • Logic on desktop. Hated it. Lol. Maybe more than the others. This was an older version on windows. Absolutely could not stand it ugly grey full of little text menus, i can’t really see myself wanting to use a mouse desktop type daw anymore actually. I love sliding and chucking stuff about pinching expanding etc

    • i would like to experiment a bit with loops but for me it would be a side thing and more a bit of fun. The modularity of it is quite limiting for me as a framework even though that can be useful within a timeline. I always think gadget is very appealing eye and ear Candy.

The only daws i got anythung out of other than them being a necessary evil in the past were n track studio when it was a very low middle tier daw in pc years ago. It was just nice looking and simple and if you have a good feel for production mixing - not sure i do anymore - you can easily put something tigether much better than someone else with teh absolute best software. And then in the end after years of trying ever daw on iPad… i just realised I like garageband. It’s the only one that was actually enjoyable rather than a chore ti use for me.

So logic has been an absolute dream. I can’t make music when I feel tense or unsettled i the process. It’s like going to a recording studio with the best equipment in the middle of Shoreditch. Might be capable, but I know I’m surrounded by a bunch of bowl cutted student hipsters and just want to go home.

To be fair, Zenbeats does have a timeline as well so it can function as a “normal” linear DAW. You simply just click the button and you’re there.

Funny how different these things can be for everybody. I really tried to get into Logic and there are some things I really love about it. The effects and instruments sound great. Drum Synth, Studio Horns/Strings, and the vintage instruments especially. But the interface is not for me. Even after using it for months I still can’t get the hang of it and it makes trying to create with it such a PITA for me. And the endless scrolling through all the parameters of every synth was annoying.

Yeah, i don’t deny it with zenbeats lol. I didn’t look too hard. I just found it really off putting its focus reminded me of beatmaker. And the clip ableton thing just turns my brain off immediately. It looks like a giant mess to me, tbh the whole app looks like a load of flashing advertising boards or something to my eye

There is two modes of using Zenbeats, the clip mode and the timeline mode. I also dislike the clip mode.

Two months ago I decided to give Zenbeats a honest try after using Cubasis for 5 years. I had a little bit of frustration at first that could easily had been resolved with a updated manual. I had to ask a couple questions that Matthew the dev was super nice to answer. Now Zenbeats as became my DAW of choice.

That’s interesting. Perhaps I’ll have another look. I’m not sure i have a reason. I did look on YouTube to remind myself of the timeline view and I just really dislike how it looks. I mean… to simplify.. it has a dance music aesthetic, i really hate that - i realise I’m probably in a minority here. :D

What does dance music look like btw 😉

I don’t do dance music btw.

Think it’s cool yiu and me and everyone are finding apps we love to work on, on iOS, whatever they are, genuinely,

I don’t do subscriptions. I have no interest in Logic. Never tried it.

Cubasis 3 and Zenbeats on the other hand, work great for me and I find my way around the UI much more easily. Maybe my ADHD brain just cant do Logic lol

As I said, with ableton I know there’s a timeline, but the focus of the thing is clips. I really really hate ableton even thinking about its gui makes me feel a bit carsick or something. Gui is underrated

Yeah totally agree, very different for different people. Workflow definitely reflects our brains and I just feel lucky that logic ipad matches mine. I feel overwhelmed and confused in even much simpler apps like beatmaker so I don’t think it’s you or me just different ways of working. I recognise exactly what you’re saying but with different daws for me

Strangely enough I don’t really love it’s in built instruments. Some are ok. I’m very very fussy though and was disappointed with its strings after reading what peopel say, XinematiX swam and staffpad are fantastic though. I like the acoustic instruments like guitar

One thing for me is that I have no idea why you can’t use the interfaces for ethic instruments garageband has. I will be playing them using garageband as they are about a thousand times better more playable in there.

I’m more obsessing ing over drums and bass atm. I really love the logic ai but I’d like to replace the drum sounds and not sure how or what with—round robins etc. Maybe I’ll make a thread actually…

If I remember correctly there is a button you can press to change the playing layout and keyboard for strong instruments but I could be wrong.

But yeah we’re all different at the end of the day and we’re lucky to have so many options to reflect and cater to that. Logic just isn’t for me and that’s okay, it saves me $70 a year 😂

FYI, it’s easy to re-skin Zenbeats’ UI: Settings > Interface > Color Theme. I’m not wild about the graphic design either but I’ve found the ZB UI to be the most functionally intuitive of all the DAWs I’ve used.

Same here. Although I love Zenbeats, I don't like its graphics either, especially how the tracks look in timeline view. I hope there will be a UI facelift sometime in the not too distant future.
When it comes to the design Cubasis is my favourite.

Zenbeats isn’t Reaper. Reaper’s a lot more sophisticated and ‘pro’ in a lot of ways. If you want that level of detail then it’s a fantastic timeline DAW. Zenbeats is more fun and available on iOS .

  • My subjective opinion of Zenbeats is that I don’t like it. At all. I don’t like the cross platform UI. I don’t like the look. Or feel. I’m not really impressed by any of the drums or synths it comes with and I dislike Roland pushing their cloud on you at every opportunity. I don’t really like anything about it.

It’s not a good example of a well designed iOS app. At the very least it’s very in-Apple-ey, which is possibly why some of you like it so much. But I like iOS apps to feel like iOS apps. I like them to feel like they actually embrace the platform. Zenbeats feels like it was made by someone that doesn’t actually like iOS.

It might be your favourite and that’s cool. I’m glad you like it. I’m glad it exists. I’m glad you can make the music you love using it and enjoy doing so.

But Zenbeats is not the best DAW on iOS.

It might be the best cross platform DAW though.

Well, it's only one cross platform DAW (at least the only one which includes iOS), so not hard to be best in this category

Zenbeats is ok to me…I’d use beatmaker3 as a Daw before I would go zenbeats…it’s just not my cup of tea…too me it’s a cup of tea with a fly in it.

Logic Pro user all the way here, even with its current flaws

I have a fantom 6 I got all the Roland I need currently

One thing I’ll say about logic is that I notice a lot of bitter comments online calling it garageband pro etc every time someone mentions it.

This is, obviously, meant disparagingly. To me, it’s a compliment. I used logic on pc for years, and logic on Mac with someone else’s for a few years and hated every second of using both. I haven’t used logic desktop in five years or so but I hated it and felt bored using it.

I love garageband. It’s the only daw before pro that I’ve ever enjoyed using besides something fifteen to twenty years ago. It’s MUCH more fun, much more enjoyable and much more productive to use than any of the big pro daws people talk about for me. It just lacked some features. Logic Pro has those features but retains the designed for touch screen relaxed easy feel for me.

For some people all kinds of technical production minutiae were vitally important in their decision making because they are the major components in how they make music. For others, musicians/songwriters, those elements contribute pretty much zero.

Recently i was on the hunt for NS2 alternative cause i wanted to try more "audio-tracks" workflow .. ZenBeats was only one iOS DAW other than NS2 where i was able to work .. only problem in ZB for me is bug where Zend Beats literally cuts out transients on samples (both in audio tracks and in drum sampler), which makes kick drums sound different (lacking "click" punch).. unfortunatelly, this is major bug for me,literally showstopper, so until this will be not fixed, ZB is no go for me ...

I am really wondering nobody else see this as issue. People are probably making just ambient music without drums in ZB

Other than that, except of few missing features, i would say it's very good DAW. I like how it looks, what i like is i can zet % scaling for UI .. and 808 Nights theme is lovely

    Desktop?

    Reaper.
    BitWig.

Zenbeats desktop ? I currently use Reaper but I was thinking of giving Zenbeats a try.

Zenbeats isn’t Reaper. Reaper’s a lot more sophisticated and ‘pro’ in a lot of ways. If you want that level of detail then it’s a fantastic timeline DAW. Zenbeats is more fun and available on iOS .

One thing I don't like about Reaper is that it try to be everything to everybody. Their is no clear workflow. Everything is configurable and movable. Then you accidentally drag a panel and spend the next 2 hours figuring out how to get it back

Also if you want tu use a surface you already own, you better make sure somebody in the forum as created a script for it. My original Korgcontrol I could not get working.

Before Reaper I was using Traction witch I liked a lot but when I tested the newer version it was very crashy.

n-Track Studio is cross-platform and a solid, full featured DAW. Not sure why it’s so rarely mentioned here. https://ntrack.com/ios-multitrack-studio.php

Simple - just move to another state...

  • I think he means per month total?. Don’t they charge tax now? So 5*12=60 + tax is almost $65+ USD. Same for me. I could/wouldn’t pay a monthly fee. I wouldn’t be able to afford it over long term either but cb3 and zb3 are all I need, especially with drambo.

I haven’t used n-Track since Logic Pro came out but I don’t recall it ever crashing on the M1 iPad Pro. Maybe it was less stable previously. There are a couple of subscriptions and they also offer a “Pro” option for a one time price of $29.99.

But yeah we’re all different at the end of the day and we’re lucky to have so many options to reflect and cater to that. Logic just isn’t for me and that’s okay, it saves me $70 a year 😂

    Logic is $49 a year or $4,99 a month.

Right I’m well aware of how much it is, no need to clarify, but like I mentioned earlier in the thread, my state applies taxes to all App Store purchases including subscriptions, so for me it was more like $70.

I’ve read all your posts in this thread (again) and didn’t see you mentioning that. But thanks for clarifying..

Yeah, there are like 3 full threads on Zenbeats going right now and being compared to Logic and I couldn’t remember exactly which one I said that on 😂 I’m not sure how so many threads for the same thing are so active lol

oh, i see, that is other app in appstore with name “pro” and just final price, no subs .. ok thanks for correcting me

  • Regarding n-Track, I tried it 4-5 years ago since it had a vocal tuning function, and yet it crashed a lot. I still tried to work through it, but when I rendered my audio it included a bunch of pops and clicks. I successfully got a refund for the $30 IAP purchase. Probably one of the very rare times I ever bothered to get a refund.

(Note - this was 4-5 years ago as mentioned. I'm sure audio rendering at least was fixed.)
