For me, Hilda , Hip Hop Drummer.

When it comes out, synplant 2 will likely be one of my all time favorite apps. Desktop only im afraid, unless the dev has had a change of heart.

I held off because it’s IAA only but hip hop drummer seems amazing. I’m very tempted.

its quite good. I dont mind the IAA, because of my workflow with it. I just separate the workflow, i create grooves, export, and then import. I generally will have a song started, say at 87 bpm, and know the basic groove i want, i go to the app, create a few different variations in sounds, grooves, swings etc in that tempo, and then export the stereo bounce to re-import. If i need further tweaking i will come back and export stems.

Do you just dump the stems in a DAW/sampler from there? That’s been my general workflow with most IAA apps for the last couple years. Exporting loops and samples to use elsewhere. Doug’s video made a very tempting case for it.

exactly! super simple. Its great for what it does. Awesome grooves, punchy, full samples. Easy tweakability etc etc

yah I am loving just exporting Hip Hop Drummer midi files to BM3 and Maschine. The grooves are so good they work at so many tempos and with different kits. Simple and super value.

I’ve only tried one of the Lumbeats apps before but they seem fantastic. There’s a handful of 3-4 I’ve been eyeing for a while.

  • Replicant 3
    Hilda
    Beatscholar
    Dagger
    Cascade
    All of the AudioThing apps
    Moogerfooger Bundle
Not sure if the Unfiltered effects came out this year or at
The end of last year but I find them very useful.

Hilda being my favorite and what an amazing piece of art/ coding. Killer.

  • Everybody saying Hilda, there is something I don’t get.. ok the technical performance achievement, eventually.. but the musicality?
I was like what is this thing everybody is talking about.. watched all the reviews on YouTube and.. meh.

Haven't even tried moogerfooger bundle yet but I suspect it will be up there.
    Hilda
    Combustor
    Pianoteq
    Mollilooper
    Best scholar
    Phonolyth
    The upcoming Naada geoshred IAPs
    Replicant 3
    Dials
    Tatat
    Mantis or Reels
Probably Buttersynth but tbh I have barely got round to using it

is Naada not out? I hadnt heard of it, but googled it, and looks like its out in 2022? or is there another one coming out? either way, this reminded me i need to hop back on geoshred. one of those apps thats irreplaceable on desktop. The naada stuff sounds right up my alley for some of the more experimental trailer type stuff i do.

There's another 2 IAP bundles coming, currently on beta. I wouldn't mention it except that it has already been mentioned by quite a few people here who are on the beta. The first 2 bundles are well worth checking out (or at least buy a few individual ones) - as usual, if money is an issue, maybe wait for a sale. But yeah the Naada stuff has some great sounds. I personally really love the saraswati veena.

I had the same reaction as you. I am not into the west coast bleep and bloop but to each his own.

Taste in apps can definitely be as individuals thing as taste in music is. It's totally fine not to like Hilda or any other app for that matter, based on your own preferences for sound, workflow etc.

greatly musical if you ask me..

all sounds except of bass and 1 pad (and drums) Hilda

    literally everything Hilda (includig drums)

    arpeggio + bass by Hilda

As a fan of synths and experimental music, I love it!

  • For me:

    Hilda
    Cascade
    Noises
    True Pan

Possibles, not really had them long enough to say:

    Speakers
    Gong Amp

The problem with this kind of discussion is that it’s so subjective. What inspires some people does nothing for others. I love Hilda - I find it inspiring and love tripping over unexpected gems of patches while tweaking it. Some instruments that others adore I find uninspiring, for example I found demos of Buttersynth and Nambu induced absolutely no desire to own either, yet they are exactly what others want. Horses for courses and all that.

And thank heaven for our YouTubers demoing all these apps so we can make informed decisions!

Well your sound design talent really shine in those exemples. The exemple i looked on YouTube we’re mostly on the bleep and bloop style.

I have enough of a challenge trying to understand substractive synthesis without getting into west coast. I am trying to get away from using presets. My hats off to you for your sound design.

It’s not the first time and will not be the last time a app is well loved around here that i don’t understand why. Sometime it’s the YouTube videos not showcasing what I need to hear. Sometimes it’s me not wanting to give an app a try on my purposely limited app budget.

Sometimes talking with people open my eyes. In this case @dendy as done a dandy work with the sounds but nothing that I hear tells me I need that synth.

But you guys enjoy it 😎

Dendy could make music playing on kitchen utensils, haha. 😂

  • Cascade and Noises would be in my top 10 for sure. Quite easy to get interesting results from each.

The GS DSP stuff as well - MagicBlur, MagicDelay, MagicFusion, MagicPitch and MMM. Like the Moog apps - master the interface on one and you will understand the others.

Dark horse synth entry: KrillSynth - It sounds really great, has a simple interface. Down side: a not so great preset system.

Did TruPan come out this year? If so, it deserves a place. I reach for it often.

    UA lo if af.

Choric - a unique, useful and powerful take on chorus.

The Moog bundle. Sounds great, but there’s a recency bias here too - anything two weeks or older on iOS is treated like some doddering old fart. Will I still be using these a month from now? Says more about me than the apps.

I think Knock came out in December 2022, so it does not qualify. But it’s pretty great for lots of different things.

Generally, it has been a big year for lofi, ambient and the like. Audio Thing seemed to release every kind of warbly, dirty delay under the sun. We still have another 3 and a half months left - still time for more.

I think Loopy pro deserves some mention for 1) keeping the important updates rolling out and 2) continuing the promise of great things to come. I really think that this might be the place to finish things for me in the future.

It’s not all the way “there” yet but it’s worth investing time into. No more Zenbeats for you?

Physically modeled, resonant metallic sound with ring modulation right there, knowing you, it’s enough material for the song. ;) You even have a nice transient for the drums section, with just a little bit of shaping.

Haven't touched it since. Hopefully, the next update brings the 'Create' AppleLoops' thing, and the ability to save them... Browser/Files App integration.

    Pretty great stuff..

Edit... This will be a legend in LP4iPad.

Pretty obvious what’s the best app of 2023 is:

    Pianoteq v8 & Logic Pro

    Runner up:

Fabfilter Twin v3 & Buttersynth (although it’s still buggy in LP4i)…

  • I agree. Logic Pro and Pianoteq for sure. There were a lot of interesting apps released this year though. A great year for music apps!

Calling out these which I have been using:

    TB Lowtone
    Dagger
    Surface Builder
    KQ Voice Plugins
    Hip-Hop Drummer

    Honorable mentions:
    King of Bass
King of FM (free and great!)

Out of all of these, I vote KQ Voice for the coolest, Hip-Hop Drummer for the most fun (I open it constantly to just hear those deep grooves), and Surface Builder for filling a need that I didn't know I had - I use it for all sorts of stuff, and keep finding more uses all the time.

  • Well, LALAL.AI Stem Spllitter

Was the GSDSP this year? If so then it’s 1000% on my list. Some of my favorite effects on iOS now. Also can’t believe I forgot True Pan, it’s amazing!

Glad to see someone else mention Choric too. I haven’t seen it pop up in this thread much and it’s one of my favorite and most used effects.

Yeah man I agree. Not that it’s not quality, bram’s always good for that. It’s just not particularly special at anything to me. I can’t think of a time I’m ever going to say “hey, maybe Hilda is the right synth for the job”. And I could never get anything “going” with it by just playing around like I usually can, which is surprising since there’s a built-in sequencer to remove that hassle step of connecting somewhere else.

I’ve been quite sidetracked from music most of the year to try and improve other areas of my life for my own and others’ sakes, but I’ve hit the most notables, and Twin 3 is an easy winner for me.

Hmm. Turns out the GS DSP was December 2022, so I guess it doesn’t qualify. My bad.

  • I get that no synth pleases everyone but my vote is 100% for Hilda as well.

It is a creative playground of sound in a minimal touch friendly design and unique to iOS/iPadOS (as much as I love these desktop ports there is something special about Bram’s made for iDevice creations).

I also love that @brambos included community presets as well. The whole package is simply brilliant IMO.
