I get that no synth pleases everyone but my vote is 100% for Hilda as well.

It is a creative playground of sound in a minimal touch friendly design and unique to iOS/iPadOS (as much as I love these desktop ports there is something special about Bram’s made for iDevice creations).

I also love that @brambos included community presets as well. The whole package is simply brilliant IMO.

Plus, I really appreciate that the ability to use it as an fx was given for free rather than as a separate purchase. The filters are so good.

    1. Chat GPT - From finding new ways to solve problems, getting fast answers to specific musical problems ,creating posts, improving content, or just creating a soft copy of myself to bounce ideas to, it’s still insane
    2. AI Test Kitchen - Granted, it’s now shifted to the website but I used it to generate interesting genre combinations. Was like Blocs Wave, except AI.

    3. I guess Logic should be here, so that completes my top 3.

The GS DSP stuff as well - MagicBlur, MagicDelay, MagicFusion, MagicPitch and MMM. Like the Moog apps - master the interface on one and you will understand the others.

Was the GSDSP this year? If so then it’s 1000% on my list. Some of my favorite effects on iOS now. Also can’t believe I forgot True Pan, it’s amazing!

Hmm. Turns out the GS DSP was December 2022, so I guess it doesn’t qualify. My bad.

I bought them this year so that’s probably why I was confused.

    .

  • Unfiltered Audio are set to release a synth later this year. So probably that will be high in my list too.

  • hilda is a nice example how good you can design a synth on ios.

Whats to gain of using a higher cpu synth for an effect vs a filter?

Beepstreet said it will have an envelope follower.

Maybe if theres an envelope routing in Dagger.

It is most of synth anyway or if its a copy of the synth.

Switches etc you think might work, wont work?

When some of the filters have a very unique sound that maybe no other iOS filter app can do? Or when the app, just running the filters isn't cpu intensive, and / or you have a powerful iPad, I guess.

Its a good filter. Otherwise it wouldnt be re-made to sell. It might be that it comprises of a lot of the synth ui anyway and hopefully all the ui works but it would still have to compete with other filters. So the dev would always optimise cpu just in case another dev makes an equal filter but with better cpu.

  • I guess just using a filter section of a synth, might be the same as using synth anyway and not using rest of synth ( cpu wise )

But the top devs usually makes the best call anyway, I guess.

I wouldn’t imagine a simple(er) filter app would be super CPU intensive. And imo, it’s not really competing with other filters as it does it’s down thing.

I’m wondering what you’re getting at? Are you saying you should just use the synth itself instead of just the filter? Because there’s definitely cases for using just the filter.

We are, but the developer mentioned in the thread earlier something about making it a separate app. Either way, I would be fine as I think both synths have a lot to offer as effects. And Hilda hasn’t been really heavy on the CPU for me.

Does the synth still work if used as an effect?

If not. Would you use a Hilda effect more than the current Hilda as an effect.

If it were remade as an additional effects version?

Hilda - FX is just FX. And to answer your question, it would be the same. Since its effect only on the effects slot is basically the same as if it was only the FX controls. But it’s helpful in its current state since you can use the LPG and LFO/slope to modulate the filter, delay, etc. rather than being JUST the delay.

You can actually use Hilda as a synth, including the sequencer, drone etc when loaded as an fx. You just need to change the EXT knob setting on the bottom left.

  • Hilda is superb. I don’t think you can find another synth like it. You can find other synths just as good sounding, but you can’t find a package like Hilda. Someone said they don’t like the mechanical tones, but dendy showed Hilda can make nearly any sound if you commit to the design. Then the FX are top quality. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I also didn’t really find the sound design as easy to understand but i often tinker until I get something interesting or similar to what I would like and see where Hilda takes it. It’s crazy that it does so much and you can see that just on the feedback and replies alone. You get a lot for $12.99. I would go so far as to say Bram might be the absolute best iOS indie dev, and deserving of that title is the best synth nomination for me. I don’t know if anyone wanted my opinion but I just thought I would offer my reasoning.

Beat Scholar would be my choice for the best drums, and not just limited to iOS. Modalics made it so it’s desktop too, which is really awesome (and it’s $40 off now so I even thought about it on desktop but I prefer iOS work). It’s so easy to make amazing drums, and use it even unconventionally so it’s a real gem for drums on iOS. We needed it. I hope Modalics continues to update and work on tutorials as I find them so helpful. It’s the best drum app we could ask for I think.

For FX I would have to give it to Beepstreet. Combustor is so insane and unique that I am happy to have gotten it luckily. I think people don’t talk much about it because it’s hard to see what $6 is going towards, but when you get it, you just get mind blown. I think Beepstreet and Bram Bos are an equal footing as the top developers for iOS.

And with that said, I have to give honorable mention to Dagger. It just came out so people might not have been able to get it yet or whatever the reason, but Beepstreet did with Dagger what Bram did with Hilda. It’s not as developed with super crazy extras, but what it does, it does so uniquely well. In fact, I might even prefer Dagger over Hilda as a synth, but Hilda just has so much to it that it’s hard to not give it first place (though that may change with more Dagger time). I would actually like to see what people would say about Dagger versus Hilda if Hilda didn’t have so many extra surprises and features.

Last but not least, GSi released Mini Orchestra, the best orchestral and symphony modeled software (that makes iSymphonic finally no longer the only semi affordable option). I found it thanks to nino and it was the best $20 I spent for symphonic sounds. So that’s my nomination for best modeled/actual instrument app.

    Hilda
    Dagger
    Combustor
    Beat Scholar
    Mini Orchestra

Last but not least, GSi released Mini Orchestra, the best orchestral and symphony modeled software (that makes iSymphonic finally no longer the only semi affordable option). I found it thanks to nino and it was the best $20 I spent for symphonic sounds. So that’s my nomination for best modeled/actual instrument app.

    Dagger
    Combustor
    Beat Scholar
    Mini Orchestra

Hilda is definitely amazing. I make multiple new patches every time I open it and it almost always starts a jam of some kind as well. That’s the hallmark of a great app, imo. Plus it works so well in an effects slot since the filter and delay sound so good. And he reeeally nailed that hardware feeling. It’s easy to forget it’s on iPad because it’s so close.

I had Beat Scholar on my list also, but just wanted to point out that it’s also great as a sequencer! I have a track I’ve been chipping away at off and on and the bases of it is drum computer for drums and then beat scholar sequencing Just Piano for piano.

  • Logic Pro
    Hilda

Logic on the iPad is pretty much it really.

My personal Best of the Year (so far) goes to BeatScholar for genuinely advancing drum pattern programming to a level Gary Chaffee (RIP) would have found useful. Math nerds and Berkley School savants will orgasm, yet the interface is simple and intuitive enough that a dog could use it. Superbly designed internal sound manipulation and easy sample import are just icing on the tasty cake. Not to say it could not be improved, but yea, wow.

    Fabfilter Twin3...

This! Most Diva-sounding oscillators and filters yet. Also, Lowtones and Hilda.

Yeah I’m surprised how little I see Twin3 mentioned despite everyone loving most of the FF apps. It’s probably a top 5 iOS synth in general for me.

  • I’m glad Beat Scholar has gotten so much love in this thread. It’s become one of my favorites as well.

NoInputMixer is going to be at the top of my list I’m guessing.
