I was never gonna leave the iPad OS environment anyway but seeing Logic come to the iPad did give me more hope for the longevity of it all and kinda makes it seem like it’s just getting started.

Hopefully the low hanging fruit such as the lack of remembering settings, missing Multi-Sampler and Alchemy UIs will get addressed soon. I wish they'd add in the screens feature that Logic on Mac had since version 1 where you can set up your screen and easily change it depending on your task. I still use that feature on the Mac to this day even on my 27" monitor. A little popup menu in the transport bar to switch screens would be cool.

I'm working on a couple of tracks at the moment but once they're done I'm planning to challenge myself to make a track in Logic, with excessive use of the Vocoder, on the iPad from start to finish. I am looking forward to using some of my iOS only audio plugins that I've spent a fortune on over the years but hardly used

I’m always all iPad so it can definitely be done but I do know the feeling of having a lot of apps you’ve barley used 😂 I have way too many lol

I think the praise vs criticism of LP4i has been reasonably balanced by the numbers.

Just a couple of overly vociferous critics with an obvious agenda to simply undermine it at all costs.

On the opposite end there are a handful that defend it to their last breath and argue any time something negative comes up. Both extremes are getting old.

I completely agree, and thankfully, only a small percentage of them go so far as to criticize other people's choices. It's one thing to make comments about app features, but it's completely different to disrespect other people's personal preferences. 😇

Agreed! I’m glad it’s not more widespread than it is though I’ll admit it has me reading less threads about Logic to try and avoid it completely. But then it comes up on other threads too 😂

I highly doubt it. Apple were more like "okay musicians stop whinging. Here's a watered down version of Logic to placate you. Have you considered buying a mac?" 😂🤣

    ftfy, lol.

Haha, yeah, turns out I'm that guy. lp4i led me straight to buying a MBP and the desktop version of Logic. I can't say I'm unhappy about it though. For me, Logic Pro X on the desktop has been one of those "where have you been all my life?" types of experiences.

to be honest, i never thought logic would end up on ipad. I assumed they'd always logic remote to sell you an ipad in addition to a mac. Basically what you did, but in reverse.

The thing that makes me frustrated is hitting the back arrow at the top of the parameter palette as I keep thinking that’s part of the info box thing. whatever it’s called. I keep dumping myself out of the project! Not a bug but by far my biggest annoyance!

I never accidentally hit that, luckily - but it does remind me of another annoying bug: when I exit a project that I've been working on for more than 5 minutes, Logic will crash, every time.

    I’ve experIenced both these issues.
I’m getting better at catching myself, but I still watch my finger land on that arrow at times and it’s like being ejected from reality for a moment and then a few expletives and back in I go.
I currently have one project which has something like 24 tracks of audio and for some reason that one gives me issues leaving it and then getting back in. It was OK for a while and then I think I added something like a Nembrini plugin and after that the project started displaying this issue. Once I get it back to the project screen I have to open another project that I know is good, close that and then I can open the sketchy one. What’s interesting is that I created an export file from that project and created a new project, imported the file into the new project and the new project has become problematic as well. So far, it’s only happened with that project.
This is on an iPad Pro M2 11” with an up to date iOS 16 installed.

  • Biggest missing feature for me is revisions. Loopy Pro does this best.

Are people just taking backup copies of their files every now and then or am I missing something?

I just duplicate the project in lieu of doing a Save As.

Maybe they’re already pulling the plug cause everyone returned their subscriptions? 🙃

I certainly did and don't think I'll sub again til there's a major update. I'm in the Dendy camp, too much not to like about the release version, and I don't really need it. Aum for the win, suits my personal needs much much better.

AUM is a better iPad fit for me than any DAW. I have Logic Pro on the desktop and from what I am reading the iPad version is somewhat hobbled. Plus you end up paying more and into perpetuity just to have the privilege of doing less. This makes no sense. Or is Apple cachet so important folks are willing to pay for it every month? I paid ONCE for Cubasis. I never use it.

Anyone that uses AUM and has Cubasis but doesn’t use it (or any other DAW) is unlikely to be swayed by LPiP, I’ve seen this fairly consistently. I don’t even have AUM but it certainly has flexibility that no DAW I know of has - I just discovered I can’t use auto sampling in AudioLayer due to this.

Coming from a DAW user angle I first bought Cubasis 2, dabbled with ZenBeats, next Cubasis 3 when I bought a new iPad and now starting with LPiP. The limited time so far with LPiP suggests it’s more comfortable as I didn’t notice the piano roll being awkward which was a thing with Cubasis 3 - I should try them one after the other.

Maybe it’s because my use cases for a DAW are more narrow but I find it hard to really say C3, Zenbeats or Logic are any better or worse than the other. I like all 3 quite a bit and would be fine being stuck with any of them.

If Sensor Tower is to believed,

I’m not sure sensor tower could have any insight into Apple’s sales.

You know, you might be onto something there. But here’s a fun tidbit from my humble corner: King of FM (an app of ours) happened to dance alongside Logic in the top 10 free music apps when Logic was released. We ended up at #2, with Logic nudging us out. So, maybe I've got a bit of a unique insight on their download numbers... And well, let's just say, Logic’s download rate may surprise a few folks. 😳

Oh, and some industry chatter suggests a couple subscription-based companies in the top 20 free music apps are barely making ends meet, not even touching the top 200 grossing. Maybe Sensor Tower's playing detective based on those subscription sales with similar downloads & pricing to Logic?

    @samu said:
So what if Logic Pro for iPad is not top-grossing?!
It's too simply cheap to climb up to the top

You make a good point! For context, our apps, priced at a modest $2.99 and $3.99, have surprisingly found their way into the Top 200 grossing...

So, the big question - "So what if Logic Pro for iPad is not top-grossing?"

Perhaps it's bringing in enough to cover one or two employees with benefits. And my thoughts are maybe, just maybe, Apple would've seen a bigger splash by making Logic a freebie? But hey, what do I know? 🤷‍♂️ It's easy for me to play armchair quarterback. Just tossing some thoughts out there

I do this all the ffffff### time!. It’s so annoying. It’s a terrible UI decision to put THAT, THERE.
    Really frustrating.

My gut tells me that both Final Cut Pro for iPad and Logic Pro for iPad are more or less treated as 'Marketing Tools' to advertise the capabilities of the iPad as a platform and as such their real value value is secondary. The primary goal for Apple is still to sell new hardware and promote the various services that are tied to the platform.

I would also not be surprised if the 'Pro Music Apps' team over at Apple is less than 20 persons, could be even less...

    All this.

  • Who said service is more important to Apple than anything else?! 🤔

Apple Service annual revenue for 2022 is 78 $bn.
Apple iPad annual revenue for 2022 is 29.2 $bn

    Apple Services statistics
An increasingly important part of Apple, as it continues to add more subscriptions and services to its iOS platform. With iPhone and iPad sales not likely to see much significant movement, Apple sees services as a way to continue growing.

In comparison to iPhone, iPad and Mac, Apple’s services revenue has increased year-on-year. Some analysts see it as the most important segment of the company, potentially reaching $50 billion in profit by 2025.

Yes, you nailed it! I guess the point I'm trying to make is with the pocket change it's raking in, maybe they should have made it free & possibly amplified the iPad music-production / iPad sales more significantly? 🤷‍♂️ On the flipside, shareholders love subscription models.

Ah, in Cupertino? Maybe zero. 😂

By 'Pro Music Apps', could it be you're hinting at our UK pals, Emagic? (When I deal with the Logic for iPad & iOS GarageBand team, they're still flaunting the Emagic badge in their email signatures like it's '90s fashion)

However, in Apple proper, I have dealt with some Logic content acquisition folks in Silicon Valley. (Not sure how many of those are just contractors)

For sure. I mean considering the many capable DAWs that work on much older iPads, that suggests they wanted to artificially limit it so they would move new units to people that wanted Logic for iPad. Also more people getting new iPads and using logic which requires more storage probably means more people subscribing to iCloud, etc.

I’m curious is apple will eventually make a Bluetooth/usb midi controller just for the iPad for even extra revenue and extra pushes for people to get Logic.

Indeed, they were. But, everyone I deal with now from Emagic/Apple is based in the UK (GarageBand and Logic iPad side). While I'm pretty sure Logic for iPad was made in the UK, I could check with them to see if they're still doing some dev in Germany (could just be that I'm not important enough to get access to the german team 😂)

I think it's a quite safe bet to say that we'll have to wait at least until iPadOS17 drops before we get a Logic Pro for iPad update.

Also I would NOT be at all surprised if iPadOS17 will be a requirement considering that it'll get improved virtual memory management which should in theory reduce the 'jetison' related crashes which happen when memory management bails...

Would I like to see a ton of improvements in Logic Pro for iPad? Definitely!
One of the biggest factors for me personally using it on a daily basis is that it doesn't tickle my 'stress nerve' and I feel calm using it which can't be said about certain other DAWs. One the 'work arounds' are cemented in the spine it just works.

    Have I had crashes? Sure!
Can I easily provoke the crashes? Most Definitely YES!

After creating a bunch of 'track presets' for the multi-out AUv3's using them is as easy as loading any other instrument.

Sure it took some time to set up and could definitely be at least as simple as on Mac Logic (with a simple + in the mixer to add a sub-track to a multi-out capable instrument).

I'm not really bothered by the 'new design' of the stock plug-ins as they are easier on my eyes than the desktop mess with gazillion of knobs cramped into a tiny space.

For me to positives outweigh the negatives by a large margin, but that's just me...

It will be fun to follow in which direction Cubasis goes as well, will it get a 'Sampler Track' is one of the main questions I have.
What about track to track routing and fully featured send busses with return tracks?
Will it get 'audio warping' and 'tempo track'?

My gut tells me that will be reserved for Cubasis 4 which will likely be subscription (or $150 unlock) just like iPad Nuendo...

    Cheers!

My gut also tells me that Steenberg has got an answer forLogic Pro for I iPad I.e. Cubasis “Pro “ with full Sampler track, mixing time signatures, full chord track , Halicon sound bundle..It might be two or three hundred dollars though

I would definitely be in line for that one. Logic is great but I would prefer Cubasis Pro for sure.

That would be awesome. The best thing that could happen after Logic Pro’s release is for other major DAW devs to compete on the iPad.

In case i am allowed to choose, then please be next player Propellerheads a.k.a. Reason Studios :-)

Reason would be brilliant on the iPad. It was always the best fit UI/UX wise of any of the main DAWs on the iPad in my very humble opinion.

I’ve recently upgraded Reason to apple silicon native version and reason in the rack is great.

    this.

  • My safe harbor is Bitwig if Apple ever loses its Logic! 😅

As far as my gut tells me Logic Pro for Mac is something that doesn't cost Apple that much to maintain and might even be filed under 'PR / Advertising Expenses' to promote and maintain brand awareness?!

I'd be happy to get some new 'Drummers' for Logic to spice things up...
...Apple's Logic Team could hire this dude...

While he's technically one of the most impressive demo drummers I've ever seen (flashy moves, wild technique), playing like this in every song would be massively annoying. He's a product of the TikTok generation.
