Phase Monkey - Poly Synth by Sketch Audio (Released)
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/phase-monkey-poly-synth/id6452880369
Phase Monkey is a polyphonic synthesizer inspired by the classic phase distortion synthesizers of the mid-1980s. However, instead of being a direct copy, Phase Monkey presents a fresh take on the classic sound engine, including the rare eight-stage envelopes. The result is a surprisingly versatile digital instrument that can produce anything from warm pads to shimmering leads to snarling basses.
Whatever you do, don’t have fun with it!
Features:
- Focused, fun, and characterful synth engine
- Touch-first design, almost the entire screen is part of a control
- Runs standalone or as AUv3 plug-in
- Universal purchase on Apple platforms: runs on iPhone, iPad, and Mac - Presets synced across your devices via iCloud
Hook up a MIDI controller to play with a keyboard (optional)
Details:Eight classic phase distortion waveforms
- Dedicated modulation oscillator for ring or noise modulation
- Three rare eight-stage envelopes
- Complex modulation of pitch and timbre possible via envelopes
- Simple LFO with five waveforms for classic modulation sounds
- Master controls: portamento, random voice pan, onboard chorus, gain
- Key behavior modes: poly, monophonic retrig, monophonic legato
- Additional MIDI modulation sources: mod wheel, pitch bend, velocity, aftertouch (channel), key follow

Ah so a phase distortion synth? Sign me up! There’s definitely a shortage of those on the App Store compared to other synthesis types. I like that interface.
Oooo I do love a new synth
I wonder if it's this? Love Gavinski's ambient synth teaser from a couple of weeks ago...
Well spotted, this is indeed it! I looooove it!
Nice.
Ah great stuff. Certain I'll buy this on release
Can't deny a PD synth.
Atm the Casio VZ8 is a favourite of mine
Patches often have a much better velocity response than a DX and it‘s capable of some really stunning results.
Midi implementation is sh*t, though, you can‘t update single patches, only full banks.
Sysex data can only be requested (or written) manually from the front panel
The GUI posted further up seems to have no relation to Casio‘s approach at all.
Curious how this turns out...

Hmm, both this and Blip box crash immediately upon opening as AUv3 in AUM (?)
Tried shutting down iPad and rebooting, same issue persists…
They also both crash immediately when I open them standalone.
Not the most promising start
Never had any problems like this. Try a delete and reinstall. Of that doesn't work, email the dev. Support email etc is linked to in the app itself, in settings, if I remember right
Did this, still both crashing immediately. I can’t access the email in settings if I can’t open the apps! Anyone care to share dev’s email? By DM if that’s the protocol..
Cheers

I dont understand how the envelopes work and why there are 8 and why the number bar below is selectable. Manual doesn help much
The selectable thing is in the manual, and also covered in my vid. That chooses which envelope is the one that sets the sustain level.
There are 8 envelopes because that is much more interesting and powerful than the typical adsr. You can use as many or as few as you like, using more can create interesting shifts in volume over time. Again, I go into this a bit in my vid.
Not quite sure how well this works from a UX point of view tho - just letting the user double tap to set points and drag to change on an xy graph, to set the envelope, would be much more intuitive. You'd easily see the whole movement with one glance instead of having to scroll through these 8 mini envelopes in the current UI. So yeah, that aspect is maybe a slightly weird choice, unless someone can tell me what advantage it has over the alternative I laid out above
There are 3 envelopes, each featuring 8 stages... (manual)
2 Oscillator pairs remind on Casio‘s CZ series
Yeah, carelessly phrased, I should have said 8 stages in each envelope
Now I figured out thanks! The release step is the next one after the highlighted box.. that was the thing
I wish you could have both ring and noise mod.
Hmm...
...after reading thru the manual there it seems like there's no way to route any of the envelopes to the 'Mod Freq' which is damned near close to mandatory when a ring-modulator is present...
I like this one a LOT.. simplistic but with very distinctive mix-cutting sound.. and when you route it through some good FX (moogerfooger collection) which adds analog warmth result is pretty huge impressive
The limited number of modulation targets is one of the weaknesses of these apps, but you could always just use an external lfo, parameters are exposed (and nicely categorized too)
Hey thanks everyone for checking out the apps! If you want to hear them in action, give us a follow on X or Insta. We also have some YouTube content (talkthroughs and factory preset demos).
They'll be $3.99 USD through Saturday then full price of $7.99.

Agter more tweakinh - man i LOVE this synth … It has IMPRESSIVE sound. Very huge.
Apparently the mod envelope is routed to mod frequency...
...guess I'll have to 'read between the lines' next time
Agree, just playing with it for 5 minutes this thing has a very good and unique sound I would describe as ‘electric’.
A double-demo for both Monkey and Blip with Giveaways
(Sorry for posting this on both app threads)
Yep, I really love it, and also Blip Box is cool. I haven’t really used FAC DrumKit to be honest - drums are not a big area of interest for me personally - so can’t compare, but I was able to come up with stuff with BlipBox that I liked very quickly
My first synth was a Casio CZ-3000. I still have it in a loft somewhere. Must dig it out and see if it still works.
In the meantime, can’t resist buying Phase Monkey! Very cool. And Mac too! Love it.
I agree, having an envelope displayed all at once would make it easier to grasp how when programming. Even better, showing the current stage, like KQ Dixie does, would be really helpful.
