Not quite sure how well this works from a UX point of view tho - just letting the user double tap to set points and drag to change on an xy graph, to set the envelope, would be much more intuitive. You'd easily see the whole movement with one glance instead of having to scroll through these 8 mini envelopes in the current UI. So yeah, that aspect is maybe a slightly weird choice, unless someone can tell me what advantage it has over the alternative I laid out above

I agree, having an envelope displayed all at once would make it easier to grasp how when programming. Even better, showing the current stage, like KQ Dixie does, would be really helpful.

Yeah, seems like a failing in an otherwise really pretty good UI / UX job

  • Despite its limits, I am really enjoying Phase Monkey! It does sounds that remind me of the Polysix, PC Engine wavetable chip, and the ringmod sounds like the Prophet 5's poly-mod. I only wish you could do noise and ringmod at the same time, and you could select the second oscillator's waveform (or maybe give it a set of envelopes).

Agter more tweakinh - man i LOVE this synth … It has IMPRESSIVE sound. Very huge.

Agree, just playing with it for 5 minutes this thing has a very good and unique sound I would describe as ‘electric’.

Yep, I really love it, and also Blip Box is cool. I haven’t really used FAC DrumKit to be honest - drums are not a big area of interest for me personally - so can’t compare, but I was able to come up with stuff with BlipBox that I liked very quickly

I’m a drummer first so I’m a sucker for shy and all percussive apps

  • Echoing all the sentiments about the envelopes. I love both apps quite a bit so far but the way the EGs are displayed in the UI is the big weak spot for me. Still having a blast with them. BlipBox can get really nasty.

  • Awesome. I just recently purchased an CZ5000 and I seriously love the sound of PD. I’ll pick this one up for sure.

Hmm, both this and Blip box crash immediately upon opening as AUv3 in AUM (?)
Tried shutting down iPad and rebooting, same issue persists…

They also both crash immediately when I open them standalone.

    Not the most promising start

    What OS version?

  • Randomizer 🎲 pretty please!

I really like the sound of this one but absolutely hate the UI for the envelopes...

  • Yeah randomizers would be great. I wonder if he thought that it might come up with too many shitty sounding patches.

Yeah the envelope stage thing is really a horrible bit of UI. I've suggested trying to improve it and strongly encourage others who don't like it to email the dev and ask for something better. As espeigel always says, devs will generally only bother changing things if there seems to be enough demand from the user base.

That said, I'd imagine people might get used to this envelope implementation over time. Still, there's no question it's a subpar implementation, in my view.

Yes please. I wish every app came with one.

  • @rygrob So I caved in and got both of the apps :sunglasses:

Could you please consider adding the 'mod freq' as a modulation option for the xtra envelope?
It's pretty essential for ring-mod based sound effects to be able to modulate the modulation frequency.

The 'destinations' for the envelopes could be chosen from a list by tapping on the arrow -> Pitch or -> Shape.
And a uni-polar option for the LFO which is again pretty essential for keeping things in tune when modulating the pitch with a square LFO.

    Other than that, well done!

A double-demo for both Monkey and Blip with Giveaways

(Sorry for posting this on both app threads)

Awesome demo! Just up my alley B)

  • Very promising app. My gratitude goes to the developer for having the courage to have a unique UI, he listened to his heart, not just convention. This thread will be of great help in improving all shortcomings. Also, he made all his apps truly universal without asking for any extra compensation in price. 🤩

My best-sounding phase distortion synth is ShockWave, it has that unique feel, cutting through anything. I’m excited to experiment with Phase Monkey, if this reaches half of the ShockWave strength, it will be the keeper.

yes exactly ! ShockWave shines above most of mono synths on iOS (i just wish it was polyphonic, which thankfully Phase Monkey is)

    15.1.
I live in the dark ages.
    I still use cassette tapes.
    I hate Whatsapp

Dev has got back to me and worked some magic, so that hopefully it will work with my archaic system when next update is released soon

Shockwave is excellent. I’m glad to have a polyphonic PD synth though.

I know we have Phase84 but updates are hit and miss as is the stability. And the Casio synth. I’ve heard horrible things.

  • Casio has some reputation for starting great things... only to trash them half way finished >:)
Sticking with my CZ1000 and VZ8M, though. B)
Digital guitar DG20 and sax DH200 (both PD synthesis of the VZ type) waiting in the attic.

Tbh none of the IOS implementations captures the essence of these synths, same as the Virtual CZ distributed by Plugin Alliance (a great patch editor at least).
You may consider an original while they are still affordable... o:)

you are not wrong here … CZ1000 is legend ..

  • Digging this, but still want a full CZ clone like VirtualCZ or CZ V on iOS.

  • I’ve just rescued this little beauty from storage.

    IT STILL WORKS!!

I bought it in 1987. It’s a bit crackly but I’m sure I can fix that.

  • Thanks for the viddy! Bought both and digging them. Blip gives me a bit of a SeekBeats vibe. Fun stuffff

  • Fix, then re-add it with LoFiAf or Needlepoint...> @klownshed said:

A bit of contact cleaner in the sockets has done wonders.

I'm currently auto-sampling some patches in Logic :)

I'm going to Autosample a load of presets whilst it's still working! Even if just for Nostalgia's sake...

it's such an easy synth to programme -- especially compared to the DXs of the day.

  • Hey everyone, just want to say thanks for coming out and making it a successful launch! This community amazes me in how it mobilizes to support relatively unknown developers like myself. YOU all are the ones who make it possible to release all the weird synth and sequencer ideas I have! Seriously, without you, this world would have fewer fun and weird music things in it ;) Thank you!

If you’re enjoying either Blip Box or Phase Monkey it’d be huge if you took the time to leave a rating or review! They help a lot with the long term success of the app.

Also, I’ve gotten a fair bit of feedback on the envelope controls so just want to let people know that it’s on my radar for the future. I’m going to at least add a few helper labels in the next update.

Last thing I’ll add is that I’ve put together a couple sound design tutorials that I’ll be premiering on YouTube at 11:00 a.m. PST (6:00 p.m GMT) … come on over and say hi in the chat! I've got one for Blip Box and one for Phase Monkey. Got more content coming on YouTube this week, so give us a sub while you’re there!

    VVV

  • Excellent idea to do some tutorials on these synths, more developers should do that. So far I enjoy them both a lot!
I just wrote 2 highly recommended reviews in the app store.

Ryan sets a great role model for devs in making good tutorial vids. Also, when he puts people on betas he gives them links to a manual, links to a tutorial vid even. Many devs, even with release version betas, and even for complex apps, don't provide testers with a manual, I find it very annoying. Ryan does things the right way and I really appreciate it. Some other devs could learn a lot from him in this regard 🔥

    meetooo!

  • I found a combination of the manual and the tutorials on YouTube helped me understand Phase Monkey far better. Same goes for BlipBox. (yep, I grabbed both of them, proud to say my first app purchase in a long time, totally worth it!) I am having fun so far, veering dangerously close to having TOO much fun, lol.

  • @rygrob could you make the keyboard not have gaps between keys?

Also I agree with the sentiment that the envelope stages could use a make up fullscreen mode and showing graphically what are they doing maybe.

    Congrats on the launch!
