Okay so today I discovered "sequence snap" under bpm settings. 🤣 This will make live recording my beats 1000 times easier! Sometimes my brain is on fire, and other times it's dull as a spoon. 😂
I'm not a regular user of Koala, and certainly not a "power user".... but, I have to say that since you can direct the incoming mic input while Koala is loaded into the effects slot (as @wim informed me in a previous reply) and, run this new collection of effects on any source input... this is definitely worth the IAP for the collection of new effects alone. Even for the casual user like myself, it's a great value!
I really do need to try it.
yeah I have no idea how people lived without that, it was one of the reasons I discarded koala xD
Hahaha! 🤣 Yeah it's a pain in the arse trying to time everything exact when recording. Sequence snap to whole sequences is a massive "game changier". 🤣
I loved koala before, but now….oh my goodness I’ve sold copies for Marek just in the last two days. It is my go to start a project app.
Excellent! 😎 The only thing I would add to Koala is the ability to have LuFS metering in the Meter effect, but otherwise, it's really the most competent sampler app I've used on iOS (at least from my personal experience, your mileage may vary).
Excellent! Where did you get the drums? Your own or samples you found?
He explicitly said that LUFS will be added 😄
It was the first thing I asked after seeing the meter
The problem withthe meter is that you can’t change anything while the meter is on view.
If you have AUM I don’t think this update brings too much new things to the table. In AUM you have 8 buses and you can have sends and bus your buses and see the fx while you use the koala interface.
For android is great.
Lol I must've missed that. 😂 Oops, lol. Well that is fantastic news!
Same in AUM on my iPhone lol. On the iPad (even the Mini 6) it's no issue. But even my "big bad" iPhone 14 Pro Max doesn't have a large enough screen.
Then again, it's easier to flip screens on an iPhone with just my thumbs than hovering my arms over a 12.9" M1 Pro. 🤣
True on an iPad, but on an iPhone which can record and sample sounds from anywhere you carry it, the busses are a godsend.
Probably the best sampler app on Android as far as I know.
It depends on how you work and your workflow as well. If you’re trying to keep things limited for inspiration sake and stay within Koala, this is an awesome update. And for sampling random things on your phone whoever you go, it’s awesome.
Idk I’d say it’s a pretty big update. It brought it much closer to other hardware samplers that are available.
Koala is all about focused fun and creativity. Setting up a bunch of outputs and FX chains in AUM is effective but not nearly the straight-up, no-barriers fun as just whipping out Koala for a quick poke around. The mixer is a terrific addition IMO.
It all depends on what you're up for at the time if you ask me. I friggin' love this update.
I totally dislike Koala in the sense of a music-making gizmo. I'd rather stop doing music all together and start baking cakes than do anything reasonable music-related in that thing.
BUT, it's the most charming and consequential tool on the platform. And maybe in that struggle to make anything basic, the chaotic nature of the UI unlocks the door of inspiration. To this day, I can’t explain to myself what the real factor of that attraction is, and, to be honest, I don’t really care any more. It’s my field recorder, idea notepad, and sound exploration tool. It’s an irreplaceable app installed on every device I have, including all my family and even my friends and relatives. I’m still shilling this thing to whomever I can. Fantastic! 🤩
I may be overlooking something simple but is there a way to rearrange the effects chain in each bus?
Would also be cool to be able to pain each bus individually outside of the auto pan effect.
Just tap-hold'n'drag the effect to another location...
Doesn’t that just bring up the switch to turn the effect on and off? At least is does for me.
Try a simple tap'n'drag.
Same procedure you use when you want to delete an effect but instead of moving into the trash move it to another slot.
I see it now. The problem is you cant drag to swap between 2, only to move it into an empty slot. So takes a couple extra moves if you just want to switch 2 effects. Also not working with a full bus of effects. At least for me it’s not. Seems like you need at least one empty slot to move something to in order to switch things around.
I would not be surprised if fx-swap makes it into one of the coming updates, send some feedback to @elf_audio
As for moving all effects from one bus to another...
...wouldn't it be better to send the pads to the bus where the effects are already?!
There is as far as I know no way to 'copy' effects from one bus or duplicate a bus.
Personally I'd love to have the option to save a 'bus' for later recall and maybe even used one of the saved busses as a 'sampling effect' and save the 4 dedicated busses for mixing.
Other 'minor' things would be alternate minor scales for the 'grid/keyboard'.
The current minor scale has 'one note off scale' for my taste
Cheers!
I'm really hoping for a better reverb, especially for Android as we don't have the luxury of auv3 there 😅
This is rapidly becoming my favourite iOS music app. I've got a circuit Rhythm and I'm wondering if there's anything that can do that Koala can't. Koala is that good.
The only addition I would have would be the ability to route busses to different busses or indeed to itself to create endless feedback loops etc...
Multi in. I checked in aum. Dosent seem like you can sample to a multi instance. Ok in Aum because you can move nodes.
Multiout whilst hearing fx before you sample.
Obviously using a sampler as a middleman.
It’s an awesome update of course!
The other thing I’m missing is sends, right now you have to apply a full fx chain to each pad, I would like to had sends and returns…
Sorry, I meant just rearranging effects within one single bus, not moving to another bus. I’ll send him a message. I think being able to swap effects in an effects chain is pretty important, for me anyway. Right now it requires quite a bit of work around.
Being able to save bus presets is a good one as well. A dedicated pan for each bus would be cool too.
This is a balancing act and I hope Marek continues to make the wise / hard choices to keep Koala elegant.
I'm not against people speaking up about what they'd like to see, but when I hear people asking for AUM like mixer features such as sends I get a sinking feeling. To me there should be a clear cutoff point between the immediacy of a fun groove box and the utility of an advanced mixer and routing monster like AUM. Personally I hope pressure toward feature bloat doesn't prevail. After-all, Koala does have multi outs to AUM for the advanced stuff.
Fortunately Marek has done a great job at making advanced features easy to ignore if you don't want the distraction.
Exactly! Before I discovered the sequence snap under BPM, I wanted Marek to add some sort of a timeline like in Flip Sampler (Flip, which is otherwise rubbish full of bugs and pales in comparison to Koala). However, I can just play sequences back in Koala in the order I wish them to be without having to time everything down to the millisecond, and I'm fine.
All we need is LuFS in the Meter, and Koala will be perfect. Then I won't have to load it in AUM with Youlean's Loudness Meter to get the levels proper.
I couldn’t agree more. All I’d like to see is a pan control and ability or rearrange the effects chain. Part of the appeal of koala for me is its simplicity. It inspires me to really get creative and I think it’s in a great spot right now. Maybe some minor improvements and updates but something major like a timeline wouldn’t benefit it all, imo.
