After-all, Koala does have multi outs to AUM for the advanced stuff.

If you have AUM I don’t think this update brings too much new things to the table. In AUM you have 8 buses and you can have sends and bus your buses and see the fx while you use the koala interface.

You guys do realize those 8 multiout audio channels aren’t exclusive to AUM right?

I use Koala 98% of the time in Drambo, and those audio channels are even easier to utilize. (Not that it’s not easy in AUM)

I call it my Koala Super Mixer (4 internal Koala buses and internal effects, with 8 external buses for all kinds of Drambo and/or auv3 effects and processing goodness!)

Here’s how I set up a Koala & Drambo inside Drambo standalone template:

Tracks 1 - 8 I reserve for Drambo itself (to build synths in, or use AUv3 instruments.)
Tracks 9 - 16 I assign to an instance of Drambo multi-out AUv3 ( for using Drambo as a dedicated drum machine)
Tracks 17 - 24 I assign to Koala (for you know, Koala stuff :))

I like using these multiout AUv3s in Drambo standalone (hosting) on the MAIN track. This way it’s super simple to assign all those audio channels to their own individual tracks, and have them all visible in a single horizontal scrolling view.

I like this!. But I can’t get it to work right…

For Koala multi out to go to different tracks in Drambo, Koala auv3 has to go BEFORE the tracks. But if I do that I can’t have those Drambo tracks playing koala pads. Does that make sense?. In the screenshot, say I have a koala kick on track k1 and a koala snare on k2. I want to sequence those from those tracks while keeping separate outputs. I can do it from “Main” as it comes before the auv3 but not from the koala tracks. I often run into stuff like in Drambo where you can only choose the output of a module that comes before…
Also, bonus question… Can you play koala pads chromatically from Drambo tracks?. I know if I enable the keyboard in koala I can do it, but I mean playing one pad - one Drambo track chromatically.

Why not use racks for this? Just load Koala in a single track, use the step sequencer normally to trigger whatever you want in Koala, then use a layer rack after Koala and route every Koala output to a specific rack layer for mixing? That’s what works for me

  • Whats the reason for making a rack for Koala and midi feedback module.

Because midi from Koala to Drambo works without a rack.

    Thanks.

    Meant generally.

    A poster ( think Charlie )

Made it so Koala dosent need midi record activated to record by using a feedback module but said it needs a rack.

Found it dosent need a rack but asking if theres a reason for there to be a rack.

Ok. So you mean triggering koala from a single sequencer track. Seems logical. But I do like to have separate tracks rather than some steps showing “chords”, specially for drums.
    Also…
    @sigma79

You should be able to play chromatically ( if you choose not to custom map )

Ok, but if I don’t auto map, how can I play more than one koala pad chromatically?. Say I have a bass on pad 1 and a piano on pad 2… Ideally I’d like to play koala pad1 chromatically from track 1 and pad2 from Drambo track 2. Is that doable?. Haven’t seen a way to map a midi channel to a pad to play chromatically.

The MPC is way deeper for sound design than koala..so I really am led to believe you may not have owned or do not currently own an Akai MPC? I believe that Koala will eventually become a sound design tool as its a lot of the way there…I just believe (my opinion) that Marek is just slowly perfecting it so that it remains streamlined with a great workflow through the entire process, and that he likes to take his time and perfect as much as possible on the journey. Some devs seemingly just slop a lot of things together and try to make it cohesive later…I don’t think this is the approach for Koala, and I respect that a lot actually. So it’s not that I disagree with what you said in its entire form, it’s that some of that was maybe a tad off.

Okay fine damn it! I admit it.....I played with an MPC a couple of times in a music store years ago but never really dug deep into one. 😂

And I'm not watching a certain Youtuber's channel anymore since he went on a dramatic rant about a "couple of negative comments" on his Koala videos. Are there other Youtubers out there that demonstrate the Akai MPC thoroughly and concisely that you can recommend? ☺️ (I can find videos on my own, but I'm also interested in what videos you dig on the subject.)

    There are…
a simple YouTube search would reveal different people using MPCs in different ways…see what fits closest to your own desired workflow…. I believe we all arrive at similar places through different journeys so Mine might not be applicable to you.

Cool. Just got done producing some Lofi in Koala, so will check out MPC One videos.

As much as you love sampling…I would suggest purchasing an MPC One

There is no better teacher than your own mistakes! I think you would love the MPC One, you can find em fairly cheap used in mint to great condition on reverb.com. Plus it’s a nice pad controller for your iOS or computer setups, has a small footprint, and full power!

Oh no, not GAS! 🤣 Anything but GAS! I have a few purchases through Amazon via Affirm Loan I need to pay off first, but indeed down the line I will consider the MPC One.

Do you have an MPC One? If so...

-Can you load and unload sounds via iPad? (I have no desktop or laptop.) If so, how?

    -How much storage capacity?

-Can it render complete projects that can then be loaded to iPad for mastering in Cubasis 3?

-Can I install firmware updates via iPad?

It'd kinda suck if I had to purchase a cheap Windows laptop just for managing files and firmware updates. 🤣

The MPC one plus can update via wifi
The card you use will determine space for data
You can sample to a pad, load a sample to a pad and opposite
It can pattern chain to song and then be rendered to stereo wav for further processing, if you needed you could master on it as well.
The plus can connect wirelessly to DL new firmware itself, other than a red paint job and external storage this is the only plus about the plus.
I did have the MPC for a few years, but I also has a Force….I kept the force and sold the MPC as I just liked the force better.
I think I answered everything…sorry for your wait, I have been busy researching the MiniFreak and just got my quest 3 so I been in mr/vr for days…lol

The only thing that puzzles me about the MPC one plus is it doesn’t have an internal battery? That would be perfect

Nothing that you tap on a screen will ever be as tactile as pads and knobs…and the clicky buttons build MUSCLE MEMORY. Muscle memory is why hardware can be a very real contender against more powerful software behind glass. IMHO. Hopefully affirm has a 0 interest period!

I know the OP-1 Field looks fun, but is there a reason/reasons you'd prefer that over the MPC One Plus? :) I'm asking out of curiosity given the OP-1 Field seems less powerful. Maybe it's more to do with workflow? :) Let me know mate. Also, is there any proof online (Youtube video, article, etc) that shows I can access the OP-1 Field's file system with a USB-C iPad?

😮‍💨 Now I have bad GAS. Transferring files wirelessly? Installs its own firmware? Can master in it? What is this voodoo?! 😃 Once I get some shit paid off, I'll probably get one via Amazon Affirm loan. Definitely want!

Nope, Affirm bakes the interest into the monthly payments already, which is fine. It's how I got my iPad Mini 6, my refurbished iPhone 14 Pro Max, 3rd gen airpods, etc. All figured into my monthly budget. :) No way in hell would I be able to afford all of these at once had I simply bought all of them outright.

Anyways, I'm more of a "note programmer" rather than a "live input" type of guy, but it seems the MPC One Plus covers both methods of sequencing. And one thing I just found out is that it has Splice integration built in! 😱 That's incredible for what I want to use it for. I have 5699 credits built up over the years in my Splice account and am still on the 100 credits per month plan, lol. (I rarely use Splice given I have sufficient amount of samples already.) Trying to find the largest storage capacity SD card that the MPC One Plus will accept.

Lemme know if you end up liking it. It’s definitely super powerful. If I wasn’t saving up for the OP-1 Field I’d consider it as well.

Are you wanting to access files on iOS to dump samples or access the stems on the OP-1? If so, there’s an iOS app that allows you to export each stem individually. I never tried it when I had my OG one but everything regarding midi and audio over usb worked perfectly fine for me.

As far as preference, it’s definitely more of a workflow thing. I much prefer tape style recording and editing and mangle tape loops over just playing on pads. Koala is more than enough for that. And even with apps like Gauss, there’s a certain charm with the OP-1 that I miss. I doubt I’ll get one any time soon. Definitely next year for sure, but I’m excited to have another one. In order of preference for me it would be OP-1, Digitakt, Volca Sample, SP404, and then MPC One. I know it has tons of fans but I could never get super into it. That said, being able to do things over wifi and not need a desktop is a huge update and does change my feelings towards the positive a lot more.

  • Do you guys remember when Koala briefly had a strumming mode? What ever happened to that?

It got pulled because the developer wasn't happy with how it worked.

Or maybe I'm imagining that. I don't see anything about it on the Discord channel, though I thought I remembered that as being where I read about it.

Thanks yeah I remember that as well but I remembered him saying it will come back. Was just curious about when/if that’s still happening. It’s my favorite app regardless but would be great to see it make a comeback.

I agree. This is why I avoid hardware for the most part. If I need a computer to access the files, forget that. Haven't used a computer since the mid 2010s. 😜 The MPC One+ does look to be an ultimate work station and sampler.

It had a strumming mode?! Well that's news to me lol. I'm in contact with Marek, so we shall see what he says regarding if that existed or not. Maybe that'll be the next IAP to be added - strumming mode and other performance capabilities.

  • @jwmmakerofmusic i guess I should ask in the discord lol will probably have better luck reaching him there. It was only out for a day and there were some issues with it so he took it out for now. This was a few months back during the last big update.

Also the official app for for the OP-Z but an independent dev coded an app purely just for individual stem export. I didn’t find out about it until I sold mine though 😂

The MPC is definitely super powerful and the stock plugins are actually plentiful and sound great. For me, BM3, Koala, Dawnbeat, etc are enough and I feel like hardware needs to offer something unique for me to get it. Which is why I like the OP-1. The sum of its part make it more unique.

That said, if the OG One had wifi updates I may have kept it. One of my biggest issues was with the software and update side of things.

    Ah that makes sense. :)

That said, if the OG One had wifi updates I may have kept it. One of my biggest issues was with the software and update side of things.

    Definitely understandable mate. :)

I’m hot strange on there as well! I don’t interact often, mostly just lurk. I’ve been more active in the BAM discord room lately.

    Ah cool. :)

By the way, find me on Discord. Same handle as here lol.

@jwmmakerofmusic i guess I should ask in the discord lol will probably have better luck reaching him there. It was only out for a day and there were some issues with it so he took it out for now. This was a few months back during the last big update.

I'm in the Discord too. :) What's your username there mate?

  • Now Koala has been updated with a ring modulation effect AND a noise gate all on the mixer. More importantly for me, the meter now has LuFS metering! 😃 The best keeps getting better!

I just saw that! Haven’t had a chance to try it out yet but I’m stoked! Having a LuFS meter now is super cool as well. Especially for anyone that doesn’t have one already. It just keeps getting better and better.

  • Are people using Koala standalone, or do you prefer it in a host, like Loopy Pro, Drambo, or AUM? And why?

I have been using standalone, and as a noob with very little experience I can say that it is the easiest app I have found for making quick loops and melodies. With the addition of the mixer module it feels like a complete DAW.

I start a Koala project in AUM first, Koala as an effect to sample in from other apps. Then I save the Koala project and continue it in standalone mode.
