Now Koala has been updated with a ring modulation effect AND a noise gate all on the mixer. More importantly for me, the meter now has LuFS metering! 😃 The best keeps getting better!

I just saw that! Haven’t had a chance to try it out yet but I’m stoked! Having a LuFS meter now is super cool as well. Especially for anyone that doesn’t have one already. It just keeps getting better and better.

It sure does! Could possibly even use Koala's just for its LuFS meter in a mastering chain (although Youlean's Loudness Meter is easier).

Are people using Koala standalone, or do you prefer it in a host, like Loopy Pro, Drambo, or AUM? And why?

I start a Koala project in AUM first, Koala as an effect to sample in from other apps. Then I save the Koala project and continue it in standalone mode.

That sounds practical. Plus it’s easy to drag and drop samples into Koala if you need them later.

I currently use it in Drambo, but I don’t like that sometimes Audio Units crash and lose my work.

The issue I had with this method was that I couldn’t hear the sounds from my synths while I recorded (pressed a pad) in koala. I was not sequencing something, but I was just trying to sample sounds in real time. How do you circumvent this apparent limitation? I hope I make sense…

I think there's a little button with a headphone icon, that turns monitoring on, if I remember correctly it's off by default.

Exactly mate. :) I usually sample the melodic one shots on C, then save, then open Koala standalone and load in whatever drums the project calls for.

I currently use it in Drambo, but I don’t like that sometimes Audio Units crash and lose my work.

Might be something to let @giku_beepstreet know about. :) I tagged him so you don't have to.

  • This app is so great. I don’t think of myself as a samples person as I don’t make loop based music really but the line gets blurred when you’re hunting down sample packs that are instruments or serve as them rather than loops or melodies. I had a lot of fun with this today. Does anyone have any favourite haunts for instrument style sample packs? I recently made a thread looking for soundfonts which everyone helped with but I think this is different, as it seems like different places. I downloaded the Tibet samples from Gumroad I think the site is so I’m not after electronic stuff but acoustic sounds that can be used as instruments or even really weird acoustic sounds.

Anyway.. such a fun app to use and mangle sounds in perfor. Sorry for just belatedly echoing what everyone e else already lnew

One fun thing to do is to load single cycle waveforms and make synths out of them. Just load the sample and set it to loop. There are hundreds of free single cycle waveforms generously supplied on the Adventure Kid web site. They come from every type of source, from mathematic to instruments. Read the note about tuning tho...

You don't have to use single cycle waveforms. You can load any sample, find an interesting bit to loop, then play it chromatically. You need to fiddle around to get the right base note in tune, but then you have a one of a kind synth at your fingertips.

Yeah I love this idea and I’m just a newcomer with it. Like I don’t know how to make anything loop without sounding like it’s looping and stuff that is pitch changed for different notes sounds like it’s pitch changed. I did have a go with synthjacker for thinsg and realise you need as many samples as possible but then with weird sounds it probably matters less as it’s more a textural synth.

Thanks so much for the site, excited

It really depends for me. Sometimes it’s nice to use it in standalone to avoid any other distractions. Especially now with the effects busses.

But half the time I’m also using it in AUM either a clip launcher or sample player. Or just as a general noisemaker lol

It’s my favorite app on the App Store by a long shot (like I would choose it over even AUM if I had to) so I’ve used it in every conceivable way so far lol

I noticed Nick Mira features Koala prominently in his last production video:

Producer for Juice WRLD, Tecca etc

Sweet! Love seeing Koala getting more recognition

FYI this guy is one of the biggest artists in recent years - 50+ platinum records, top of billboard 100 hits, Grammy nom etc. He streams his production work to a large audience. So you might want to reach out or try to get some kind of additional promo/testimonial from him.

I’m not the dev haha but definitely a good call. Nick Mira is one of them big guys for sure. Lucid Dreams is the most streamed song ever I’m pretty sure.

Kinda makes me wonder if he’s used it on any of the tracks he’s produced. I’m pretty sure Madlib uses it too. I know he’s almost exclusively iPad these days outside of mastering.

Restore the last saved state of that particular instance

Most of the hosts I use have a tap to reload option that will try to restore the last known state. Automatically reloading might be inviting an endless loop of reload -> crash

In the case described above, it sounds like work was lost because the poster hadn’t saved the state before the crash.

Had you saved the koala state? Loopy Pro tries to reload the last state when you tap reload after a crash, I think AUM , too. But, the state needs to have been saved.

  • @cokomairena : you should also make sure to provide information about the crashes to the Koala dev...if you are getting a lot of Koala crashes, it seems like that is the primary issue and the Koala dev would need to address those.

Precisely. I’d say it’s a good rule of thumb to always save a project once you think it’s something good or worth keeping/fleshing out. If I’m working on something and really starting to like it I go ahead and save it just in case.

It currently saves the entire session, in that session the info for the state is already there

Same actually. I love Koala as-is, but I personally hope midi out wasn't the "big update". 😅 It'll probably prove useful for some, so kudos to those who like this feature. Just not for me.

  • it’s awesome. at first i wasn’t sure if i there was a need for midi out. but once i dug i. for 5 minutes i realized the possibilities. you play in midi or use the piano roll to paint i. notes and sequence all you midi instrument of fx . it can sequence and playback along side having a kick ass sampler all from one app. I love it
