  • I like Bleass Delay.

I use a lot of real tape echo already so I’m not that into the emulations. I like Wires a lot for a lo-fi echo though.

There are a lot of interesting posts here! K7D will definitely find its way back on my iPad. UltraTap will be checked out.

To clarify my initial question. I’m aware of the amount of delays there is. But I’m lazy so I asked for your (recent) go-to delay :)

There are too many to list them all, but the ones I can’t live without are:

    • Desktop: Logic Delay Designer, Timeless, and Sandman Pro.
    • iOS: Timeless and ChowMatrix.

I'm glad to see so many of you love UltraTap, it’s a monster of a delay. 🤗

I just recent got it during the sale and I’ve been really missing out. Thought the Virsyn app had me covered but it’s actually really unique in it’s implementation.

64 taps are under the hood, and you can play them in a minimum of 10 ms, spread them, and taper them as you like. You can design sound with it. Chop-Rise knobs hide so many algorithms that will teleport you into different universes of what you can do with this delay. And it's so easy and intuitive. 🤩

Edit: I’m talking about Eventide UltraTap.

  • May I ask what is the difference between K7D and DLYM? And what is their CPU footprint?

I never tried DLYM but I know I use many instances of K7D with no worries on my iPhone

  • Because when this type of question is asked, most (if not all) of the apps that exist are mentionned ;) , I'd say don't forget Modley! It can help to obtain very creative FX.
That said, my go to, and definitely the only one I could keep, is Timeless B)

Yeah, for a short moment I hoped to grab some Ursa Major (SST282) magic from this device...
    didn‘t work out :'(
(Eventide once had a version for Pro Tools)

  • It happens more than often an internal delay from a synth is enough. Or a combination of it with an external one, like the one from Sunrizer, Lagrange, iSem and the new Moog Mariana.
Delays I use most are probably Mantis, Cascade, Yukawa, MoogerFooger Delay, Echo B2.

  • Interesting thread. There's a lot of delays here I've never heard of. I always use a couple of Nembrini Delay3000s for guitar - a quick repeat to fatten the sound and a longer barely perceivable repeat for fake reverb. Sounds great. It probably does a lot more.

I would have loved it if it had a low pass filter

There is a “Tone” knob, negative values will make a darker sound. It's an intelligent filter under the hood.

I almost always use delays on a buss which makes it easy to add a filter, which I also almost always do or the mud can just build up. Cutting the low mids also helps so I always stick Logics stock EQ as the first plugin in the aux channel.

I also usually stick a compressor on the delay line and side chain it so that the delay can be ducked.

You could also then stick a pitch shifter on before the delay for shimmer style fx.

Using a bus also means you can go crazy on the fx as you’re only processing the wet signal — automate the sends to make swells and build ups etc.

    Forgot one:

FAC Bandit. Fantastic when you want to target a specific frequency with delay. I usually use delays on sends and more often than not high pass the channel so I don't get too much bass in the delay lines to muddy up the mix but Bandit can do this instantly which can be cool, especially for stuff like a drum loop or drum machine plugin that doesn't have separate outs; You can put delay (or whatever other effect from Bandit) on just the high hats really easily for example.

I used FAC Bandit to make a DrumBrute sample I made sound stereo when it was recorded mono (the drum brute Impact has 4 separate outs but I just recorded the main mono out when I was messing about and ended up using it in a song -- FAC bandit added delay to just the hi-hats and I think it sounded great).

I bought the delay and reverb in Bandit (IAP) and I use them a lot.

So do I, but for some reason that I don't know, I often have to restore the purchase in the standalone version in order to use them in the Auv3 🤷‍♂️🧐

  • I keep coming back to this thread trying to get my thoughts together, but it’s so hard to choose - we are spoiled for choice with delays on iOS, and I really can’t think that one really stands out above all the others.

Actually, this is a question with an almost impossible answer, there are so many good delays and they are all different. Just like cooking every dish needs different spices to get there.

If there is one type of effect that I just can't have enough of, it must be the delay 😊
A boring sound fed into different delay plugins can be so inspiring!

    Same here. Delays and distortions.

Yep it’s been blowing my mind lately. Such a great sound mangling (or improving) app. I didn’t realize how wild it can get and how unique it is, which is why I haven’t bought it until this recent sale. I’m glad I did though. I can see working its way into top 3-5 delays for me.

  • I really like the delay in Transit. Simple and sound really good.

  • Best reverse delay?

    Best tape echo?

  • @Montreal_Music said:

    Best tape echo?

I have not compared delays closely in those 2 categories, but certainly YaleD is a cheap and very good reverse delay. Other Desert Cities also has a reverse delay among all its other delay algorithms. That app is really a must-buy imo for any delay fan, so versatile, beautiful UI.

Tape delay there are just so many, I doubt there is a best one. And you likely already have several good ones.

  • Timeless, ratshack.

There are probably a dozen tape delays at this point and imo, they’re all great in their own ways. I commented a list of them earlier in the thread I think.

For reverse delays, YaleD, Other Desert Cities, and FS Reverser are all pretty good.

  • Other Desert Cities is my go-to. I have a soft spot for Kosmonaut, and love Wires and Reels for lo-fi delays.

In MiRack I often use the clockable delays from MSM and Nysthi, and increasingly JiraJira (you can get really interesting stuff going with the latter by turning individual heads on and off with gates, including the erase head)

But if you twist my arm and make me pick just one, it’s Other Desert Cities. So much stuff in there, so many possibilities. And tons of interesting presets if you’re in need of something quickly and don’t want to interrupt your creative flow.

  • I can add another one to the list 😁 : when I start something in Cubasis, my go to is the too overlooked, but imo really EXCELLENT, HDelay from the Waves iap 👍🏻.

  • My new favorite for colored delay is not out yet but will be soon :sunglasses:
For clean and simple delays I tend to prefer the BLEASS Delay...

  • Another vote for UltraTap. Looks boring, but is amazing.
