  • I get a lot of mileage out of Bleass Delay and/or K7D. Just depends on the sound i am looking for.

  • Didn’t see anyone mention Modley. Pretty decent modular multiFX built around a delay.

Modley is really really great! One of those ones I keep meaning to use more. Super powerful.

  • My favourite for years was the RE-1 - I absolutely love what it does, but I’ve been having issues with it in Logic Pro. It seems to silence the signal path it’s in when I insert it on a track and I think it might have just taken out an entire song’s master out when I used it on an aux send.

I mostly use Timeless and the built in delays in Logic for the most part now. They seem to cover most of my delay needs.

… I did 🤗… and you're right to call it a multiFX 'cause it's much more than a delay 👍🏻

I bought Modley two months ago, it was a true revelation for me. How did I miss this, I don’t know. I didn’t have time to play with it seriously, but it has great potential. Those “pre” and “post” lanes and multiband gate module sold it for me.

The OP question was about the best or most popular delay, so I guess lots of marginal and unique delays will be left out.

  • I can’t think of a delay that sucks.

Yeah... I mean, for me anyway, 'most popular' doesn't mean anything at all really. Most popular rarely ever equals best, in my view, in any area of culture 🤷‍♂️

Most popular is basically, for me, usually pretty much a guarantee that it will not be my favourite 😁

Delays, reverbs, choruses, etc. are like artist brushes, even the old one with just one hair will find its place eventually, and in that particular moment, it will be the best and only. 🤩

Actually, this is a question with an almost impossible answer, there are so many good delays and they are all different. Just like cooking every dish needs different spices to get there.

If there is one type of effect that I just can't have enough of, it must be the delay 😊
A boring sound fed into different delay plugins can be so inspiring!

    Same here. Delays and distortions.

Delays, Distortions, and Reverbs of course!

  • I’ve been reading this conversation with lots of interest and am happy about every post going off path :)

I guess I was hoping for some kind of jack of all trades on iPad just like Echoboy is on desktop. But I’m happy to learn about this wide range of delays now that exist on iPad. Very cool!

    • RE-1 for live fun mixing as you have the three tape heads, that can midi map’d on sliders, (when the ui is open it’s a huge cpu hog.)
    • Nimbrini300 is my default go to. I love its subtle character, really authentic 90’s hardware sound signature (the cheaper na delay rack has a similar signature)
    • Kaija, desert cities, cascade, rymdigare for blurring the lines between reverb and delay. Kaija is prob my fav here, as it’s more delay than reverb.
    • Timeless is a beast. Really clean, configurable and complex
    • Delayus for weirdness or some of the miRack delays (I.e. Portland weather)

No animals were hurt due to spelling errors in this post.

Would like a 12bit sounding delay like an oto bim. MagicDelay and mantis under investigation (too expensive for an impulse buy) and just bought TTAP on the strength of feedback in this post.

What thread is that recommended drambo delay, mentioned above?

I tried to get on with Portland Weather but it seemed overkill for my purposes. Jira Jira on the other hand with some gate sequencers or logic modules controlling taps in and out is amazing 😍

Portland Weather is mind boggling, but occasionally you can hit randomise and it does something absolutely amazing. But you really need a limiter in there, as it can go completely bananas - likewise its companion, the name of which escapes me at present (Hair Pick?).

I’m glad @jollyDodger mentioned Rymdigare - I tend to think of it as a mutant reverb, but it definitely has delay-like qualities and uses. And it’s indispensable for anyone into textures and blurring.

Yep those are the 3 that I will pretty much buy regardless as long as it’s good and offers something unique. Chorus, Phasers, etc, once I have a few I don’t really go looking for more.

Every reverb and every delay theoretically do the same thing, but in practice, all of them sound differently.

Of course, you can reproduce this in dRambo, and even more. I tried many times to replace one of my frequently used delays, just because I don’t want to be too dependent on one product. Yes, you can make the same timing and taps, but the final sound is always different, and those small differences you can’t change. It's like choosing an electric guitar, every one of them is technically identical but still sounds differently.

Another thing that I discovered is that every FX has its own "soul" because the UI, or those small differences, or the way that they were designed, lead you in different directions of creativity. They even inspired you to make something completely different. Then again, it depends on how you make music, we all know that for making a masterpiece, only one instrument is enough.

p.s. It's coffee, it was not strong enough this morning, and I’m still half a asleep. 😂
