Does this sound like a "clean" Nord sound or does it get gritty too? I used to have a Nordrack 1 and with the FM dialed up, it could sound pretty good. I hope it has some punch!

Nope, this synth can't do FM modulated sound like on Lead 1,2,3 .. But this specific asped of lead is 1:1 cloned in Butter Synth, just try "FMX" modulation .. it sounds exactly like the on on Nord Leads

Where in Buttersynth is this “FMX” modulation? I’m not seeing it in the list of modulation sources.

This is why I'm starting to love Buttersynth. It can sound very Nordlead FM.

  • It brings me so much joy to read all your beautiful words.
Believe me, it means the world to me.

I'm not good at words, but please know that I appreciate all of you.

    🖤🖤🖤

Good bug detecting, everyone! I'm looking into bugs and crashes. And, there are def some sequencer bugs that are giving me a little frustration, but I'm sure I can lick 'em.

    Plus some good news –
The next update (already submitted to Apple), I added a Filter Velocity Scaling knob. Gives the app a bit more playability.

    NOTES:

    • The onboard Keyboard controls are hidden in AUv3 mode. This is because all the controls in the standalone keyboard menu are controlled by the AUv3 host (tempo, etc). Except the Mod Wheel button, which is on top in AUv3 mode.

    • The filter is different from the previous AK Synths, for sure. It's written from the ground up, I'm pretty sure most of you can immediately tell the difference. Compare it to the filter in King of Digital, which almost has Moog-ish character to it (Fun fact: it was contributed by a software engineer at Moog).
Nerd Synth's filter is a similar slope and feel to the top LP filter selection in the A1 hardware (the one above the default). It's a different slope and filter than the NL1/NL2 series LP options. And then, I hot-rodded it with some hyper Rez, that may be bordering on too extreme. 😂 So it's a unique beast.

    • It's a bummer about the bandpass and hi-pass filters not having an envelope. This is because the Low Pass filter is completely re-written in C++ by yours truly. (So if you don't like it, I guess I'm to blame. No biggie, I never claimed to be an expert in low-level filter DSP engineering. Haha) while the bandpass and hi-pass filters are code units made by Apple. To add the envelopes I'd also have to write bandpass and hi-pass filters from scratch. Most of AudioKit's audience aren't as technical as the users on this board, so the tradeoff didn't seem worth it for a $5 app

    • Butter Synth is a super pro, and fantastic app. I wouldn't put NERD Synth in the same league as far as raw sound design power. With NERD Synth, I was aiming to find a balance between power and easy-to-use controls for quick sound sculpting. So, my apologies to the Butter Synth developer if you're reading, I know your app is much better than mine.

And, those lego pics are super funny. Love 'em!

Oh, by the way, I was messing around last night comparing the JU-06 boutique to my old Juno-106, and man, the JU-06 was kind of frustrating me. The sound quality just isn't the same, and it feels off. But honestly, if I didn't already have a Juno-106, I'd probably love the little JU-06 synth.

It got me thinking about this app. I now have empathy. And, I get it, for sure. It's been a mixed bag so far — three A1 owners have emailed me saying they can't stand it, while four others absolutely love it. Right now, it's pretty much a split decision.

It seems that if you don't have an A1, NERD Synth might actually be better and more enjoyable for you. But if you do have the hardware, try to see this app as a cool new addition, for just 5 bucks. And, if it's not your cup of tea, I get it and no worries! You can always return it. I won't take it personally.

Either way, this was a good learning experience, and I look forward to hearing more of your music. I've been listening to everything I can, and am blown away by how good you can make this little synth sound!

    🙌 🙏 👏

  • @AnalogMatthew I think if someone is unfavorably comparing your app to the alternative... a several thousand dollar hardware synth... perhaps they need to reset their expectations.

    Personally, I like it. :)

    @NeuM haha, well I agree!

Folks, this filter velocity knob is a complete game changer (if you're playing with a MIDI keyboard). I owe the sound designers a big apology – for not having it when they were designing presets!

Spent the last couple of hours lost in going through presets and trying the knob on it (wow!). Now, it's starting to sound more like hardware... I'd highly recommend it on Red Sky's patches

  • The "Heat" knob seems to have quit working only in AUv3 mode with some recent changes I made. Oops, sorry folks, and thanks for bringing that to my attention.

  • Thanks for making cool stuff and even being willing to engage with the community like this @AnalogMatthew ! I know it can be trying, but many of us really appreciate the products you make and the skilled humility you bring.

Oh, by the way, I was messing around last night comparing the JU-06 boutique to my old Juno-106, and man, the JU-06 was kind of frustrating me.

Absolutely agree with this. Also few other boutiques are quite disappoimtment when comoared to what they are trying to emulate (JX06, JP08). JX06 is just generic ZendCore synth instead of proper fair emulation. Others are great (SE02, but that is different case cause it is analog, or SH01A - that is really great .. Also tiny Aira S-1 is really great synth, simplistic but sonically very true to original SH101. Recently bought JD-08 and this is great too, in some things sounds even better rhan JD800 - just filter when resonance is turned over around 50% sounds like complete shit .. But other than that, very good reproduction of legend.

Back to what i wrote - i am absolutely not comparing Butter Synth in general with Nerd, i fully understand those are different types of playground. There were just people asking about famous Nord FM modulation so i replied to this, that’s why i mentioned BS - cause simply this particular detail of BS is correct Nord FM implementation, that’s all..

Still hoping that one day we will have true faithful emulation of Nord Lead 2 on iOS ..

@AnalogMatthew The only thing stopping me from buying is my constant lack of storage space and therefore the size of the app…since it’s not sample based 252.4mb seems huge? Are many of those megabytes accounted for by presets and, if so, can they be deleted by the user after installation?

Just bumping my own message @AnalogMatthew. Why is the app so big and is any of it data which can be user deleted after installation? Cheers.

Most of the oscillators are sample-based (short oscillator multi-samples) and 250MB is not that 'huge' unless one is rocking a <32GB device.

Well, let’s not get bogged down in semantics, 250mb is pretty big compared to, say, Audiokit Synth One at 44.4mb. As i stated, i have a constant lack of storage space available - my own fault i accept - and that was the reason i was asking, it wasn’t a criticism of the app, just asking the question.

Thanks. I found it after I posted. I was looking in the Matrix page modulation sources for the FM synth rather than a source for the Wavetable synth’s phase mod knob sources.

  • A bit late but just got the app. I ran through 80% of the presets to find my favorite 30 Ambient sounds to use in this demo

Found other non-ambient sounds of course, but this one's focusing on them. I love the variety of sounds in this app, and that it goes smoothly when going through sounds.
Funny anecdote - about 3 minutes in - while recording this, a cockroach was spotted and I couldn't stop the jam :)
Anywho, looking forward to keep exploring the app.

The pad presets from Red Sky Lullaby are especially good. My favorites are Little Pad of Calm, Rich Harmonics Pad, and Refresher Pad.

Here I'm trying out the Rich Harmonics Pad. It's a real-time capture using only the nerd synth and its built-in keyboard. There are no added instruments or effects.

    Submitted Next Update, 1.0.2:

The SEQ should hopefully start immediately after key press in AUv3 mode when there’s no transport running.

Also, about that "Heat" knob – revisiting it turned out better than expected. I wasn't happy with the original Drive FX. It lacked subtlety and was kind of a one-trick-pony (loud and extra loud, hahah). So this seemed like a good day to revamp it. The flipside is that the new code will change how some of presets sound. But, this new knob will allow you to dial in the amount of drive more in line with the hardware, and make it far more usable.

Also, try different levels of heat and maxing out the new "Heat" knob on Dean's 303 II preset from the "Intro" bank – it’ll scream with some beautifully distorted harmonics!

  • I got way too many iOS synths, but I’m glad to get the Nerd Synth!

  • The “Blackhole” reverb presets sound very nice.

  • For me, this app is a very happy medium between the sound design behemoths (Butter, Tera Pro etc) and the simpler synths with fewer features. Lots of features to explore and a simple patch can go in a variety of ways once you dig into the extra settings - plus, most importantly, it sounds great

  • I’m sitting here and played the Nerd Synth with my full PA setup and did some comparison with my OB-6.

This app holds its own. Almost pains me to say it given the price difference, ha ha! And it’s more fun to cruise the presets with the nerd synth.

By the way, it would be nice in the browse by category mode if there was a quicker way to mark favorites.

This thing has high-quality sound and a really nice UI that makes it fun and easy to be the kid in the candy store and try lots of different things.

Also tons of stuff for sound design, but that’s not my thing TBH. I’ll wait for folks on this forum, and Matthew, to create more presets to indulge me.

  • Not saying the nerd synth sounds like an Oberheim. Just saying the sound quality is pretty darn good.

I think fix on overdrive didn't improved anything. Knob now just changes volume but doesn't affect amount of ovedrive which is a kind of pointless. It still just distorts same way ( a lot) - I would expect that knob should affect amount of distrotion from almost unnoticeable mild overdrive to very much distorted instead of just changing volume.

    Hello @AnalogMatthew
Program change and Bank select (msb) work perfectly when the app is standalone. However, it doesn't when it is used as AUV3 (same with all the other audiokit app that I tried: king of bass, digitalism, saga, etc.).
Is there something I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks!

Great info man and post. I dont have the a1 and never planned on getting one… but this synth is badass and for 5$ got me as close to an a1 I’ll ever get. I feel like i don’t need one now anyway 😎 but iOS music making does that to us!
Appreciate what ya do and I’m using this synth daily … its too fun not too and super easy to navigate!

  • New update … a preset bank

Working on my own preset bank btw…. Not an official one (although I’d be honored af if I got to do one ) but a pretty decent one nonetheless 😎

  • The bottom of most screens/pages are cut off in full screen view, using as AUv3 in Cubasis 3.

It's working fine in AUM, see below. All the screens/pages seem to be the same size. And the bottom half is just one of the other upper pages; there's no additional info there, just conveniemt access to more knobs. The keyboard and its controls are not part of the AUv3.

  • If you have Cubasis, see if you can confirm the problem?

  • Looks OK to me. Cubasis 3.6.1. This is on iPad 6 with the classic iPad Retina screen, iPadOS 17.4.1. Maybe you have a different screen size?

Your pic isn’t full screen… Air 5 here, same Cubasis/iOS specs as you.
