Song Of The Month Club - April 2024
What is the Song of the Month Club?
It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.
The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.
The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow.
All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.
We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material
And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine.

My entry for the month, lyrics in the spoiler:
Even though I know your kind
You got your claws inside my mind
All the schemes that you conceive
All the tricks hidden up your sleeve
So play your ace before you leave
You love the game and to deceive
An inveterate liar
You scheme and conspire
You laid it on me
You played me
I fell for you
So it’s all on you
Do what you want to do
The time has come for me to say
That you and I go separate ways
I know you think I’m so naive
But I’m not as blind as you believe
So play your ace before you leave
You love the game and to deceive
An inveterate liar
You scheme and conspire
You laid it on me
You played me
I fell for you
So it’s all on you
Do what you want to do
I think you really aced the vocals on this. It has a Floydesque(Gilmore) feel to the harmony. Great lyrics too man, you know it’s a great job man.
For my submission I have to give you credit for it, otherwise it would not be ready for April 1! The first , and probably the only month, I’ll be able to meet you at the start line lol! So thank you
With that I submit to you a work you may have seen but I did this song WITH the great @Richardyot as heard above
So he kinda is getting a double feature for April 2024 hehe nice work richardyot - thanks again
ICE ORCHID (remix feat RICHARDYOT)
Thanks!
And your track was excellent, all I did was to shuffle the arrangement around and create some drums, and add a little FX spice - all the music and performances were yours. It was great fun to remix it
I was going to say it was Beach Boy-esque, but maybe the Pink Floyd comparison is more apt. Great lyrics as usual.
Nice track. I really like the keys in this one.
Thanks for listening - always appreciated ♥
Thanks Alex! I am glad you liked it that makes me happy
Hi all
Hope everyone is well. I'm really looking forward to listening to everyone's creations this month.
After an absence of a good few months I am glad to say I am writing songs again, and largely this is down to starting to learn the piano about 6 months go, which in turn has inspired me into new directions.
So this month's offering is a piano centric song - I am glad to say I can play this pretty much as you hear it on the track - the upside of this is that it is honest with very little midi editing, but the downside is that I am still at a very early stage with the piano, so I know it could be a lot better.
Lyrically, I am revisiting a theme I've delved into in the past, focusing on the difficulties some of us can face with relationships with adult children. The reference to the "man in the spotlight" and that night 34 years ago in NYC are two Mike and the Mechanics concerts - 34 years apart - Living Years explored the same theme as my song.
Thank you for listening - sorry it's 6 minutes long!
As I Get Older
As I get older
Some people they get colder
Who did we think we were kidding?
What made us think we’d be winning?
The man in the spotlight was talking to me
Telling me all that I was unwilling to see
A new generation
With no explanation
Making the same old mistakes
Taken as fools, whatever it takes
Now I’m in the spotlight with tears on my face
I’m leaving this theatre I won’t leave a trace
Is your heart at peace, is your conscience clear?
Would you prefer it, if I was still here?
When the guilt kicks in in the middle of the night
And you paid lip service for most your life
You never phoned or sent that text
And you know why, but in retrospect / you knew best
The years are going faster
I’d hope that it’d last, but
Now I know that’s not true
I can’t live my life through you
Seen it all through, some sad sense of duty
Pretending it’s real to make out that suits me
We imagined that somehow we’d be special
Man I think we were expecting some kind of medal
Take me back to that night in New York City
34 years makes me come over all kinda giddy
Is your heart at peace, is your conscience clear?
Would you prefer it, if I was still here?
Is your heart at peace, is your conscience clear?
Would you prefer it, if I was still here?
When the guilt kicks in in the middle of the night
And you paid lip service for most your life
You could wait for a call from beyond the grave
Or the here and now while it’s not too late
Lovely track. The layered vocals are expertly crafted and fit the song perfectly. The chorus is achingly beautiful. Love the ping-pong echo delay thingy going on too. The lyrical character assassination contrasts starkly with the beautiful melody - reminds me of Morrissey’s love song “…and if a double decker bus, crashes into us…”. Excellent
Nice, I agree with the Floyd vibe - I was waiting for a Gilmore-esq massive lead guitar to break forth!
This is a music track that I improvised on two MIDI keyboards connected to Bitwig Studio on a desktop PC. There the MIDI was routed to Solo for the flute, as well as to Lunaris 2, Omnisphere, and Repro-5 for the background instruments.
After bringing the audio recording into Vegas Pro, I applied the Lurssen Mastering Console plug-in to the audio mix.
It's titled The River.
@BillS very moving piece, lyrics are great . Sounds like you play acoustically ; nice piano . Do you play 7 or8 string guitars ?
@DavidEnglish as always impressive. Very soothing. Did you also do the video? What app/program did you use? It’s great
The piano playing is coming along great, excellent job with the performance.
The song is quite sad, I found the lyrics poignant. Technically it's also very well executed (as usual), the only niggle I had was the piano competing with the vocals a little - I would be tempted to add some sidechain compression (or dynamic EQ) to the piano so that it ducks a bit when the vocals come in.
This video explains what I mean:
Excellent track and it's great to watch your piano journey unfold!
Here’s my entry for the month:
This is a Burnt Earth tune, made with my old band mate. We’re down to 2 now and we’ve had a pretty dramatic change in direction but I think it still sounds like ‘us’.
The inspiration was to make something that would evoke a Scandinavian landscape/movie.
I’ll return later to listen and comment on all the songs already posted. Off to a flier! SotMC seems to be in rude health :-)
Yes it's definitely picking up again after a bit of a lull in 2023 👍
As it should!best thread pinned ever besides papas sale list lol
Seriously SOTMC is serious business man
I love it
And I LOVED Fjords man. This is a song that they should use in a Viking movie. The score sound is apparent. Love the strings and darkness , bleak soundscape for the nord
I love all the images that are conjured when listening to this track, it really feels like an unfolding movie, and all the sounds are so well chosen and they create an incredible atmosphere. The perfect cinematic storytelling piece.
I can picture the river as it gently flows through the landscape, another peaceful and meditative masterpiece.
For the visuals, I tend to use Astrofox, Magic, and other PC-based visualizers as a starting point. Then I transform them with various video FX plugins within Vegas Pro.
David, you are master of your chosen craft - I sometimes wonder if there is a commercial market for your work? I know zilch about marketing but I’d have thought there would be. Another excellent example.
Cheers Richard, appreciate your comments. I’m loving the piano - wish I’d taken up years ago. I tend to use automation extensively to ensure vocals sit perfectly in the mix, and sometimes side chain compression as well. Waves Vocal Rider can help with the heavy lifting too. It’s a part of mixing process I really enjoy. Will have another listen!
Nice gentle happy sounding song, with lyrics that are at odds with that completely, which is a cool touch. The harmonies in the verses are really nicely done. Strong track, as always.
This is really good. It has nice catchy melodies and guitar tones that fit perfectly over an arrangement that takes you through the song nicely. This should give you a perfect blueprint for future tunes too.
Thank you. The piano is Pianoteq 8. There is acoustic guitar in the choruses but it’s a bog standard 6 string.

Fun track, with the Michael Caine samples providing a lot of entertainment. The gnarly bass is great, the drums discreetly groove along and the quirky synth melodies fit the vibe of the track perfectly.
Thanks so much! A lot of it was just trying to work my way around logic, I’ve never made a track in it. Thinking I might put a bit of tremolo guitar on there somewhere. It’s 90% of the way to a spy soundtrack anyway, some jazz chords will finish it off 😂
lol, really nice!
Coincidentally, the tune I’ve been messing around with also features Michael Caine. And Zulu warriors on backing vocals!
