    Here’s my entry for the month:

    This is a Burnt Earth tune, made with my old band mate. We’re down to 2 now and we’ve had a pretty dramatic change in direction but I think it still sounds like ‘us’.

    The inspiration was to make something that would evoke a Scandinavian landscape/movie.

    Great track, John. Not sure I want to visit those Fjords though, pretty scary. Could have been part of the Midsommar soundtrack, have you seen it?

    Thank you. I didn’t realise the track was quite that scary. It’s cool that it can evoke any emotion, even if that emotion is ‘aaarrrggghhh!’ ;-)

    Or sends cold shivers down your spine. That would be ultra cool! Figuratively.

    I haven’t seen Midsommar, no. I’ll add it to the list.

    Scary was not exactly the right word. There is an underlying tension that's here during the whole track. Usually, when hearing this, my crazy brain starts imagining all kind of things. For your track there's a monstrously tall Norwegian guy hiding in the woods next to the fjord, holding a giant Nordic axe... I cannot see if the axe is covered in human blood though, so I don't know yet if I should bee scared to death or not 😉...
    The Ari Aster's movies I saw (Hereditary and Midsommar) didn't work on me for whatever reason. There are plenty of disturbing things there but I was never scared, only slightly intrigued.

Definitely worth watching though. Next on my list, good most recent one, "Beau Is Afraid", big fan of Joaquin Phoenix.

    Hey there, I woke up this morning with something in my head and tried to play it first on my IPhone for the generic idea then finalized it on Ableton. One of these day where “the flow” catch you the whole time. Hope you like it

    Great work. You used the vocals synth engine in a more human way compared to the previous tracks you shared. Great job

    Thank you. I think that the insertion of breathing moment gave this human touch

    Do those kind of synth engines have some kind of optional humanize function that does it for you?

    I have only scratched the surface of what is possible with Synthesizer V. Most of what you can hear in this track has been automatically generated. I have "just" inserted the notes and the lyrics and made some adjustments, like inserting "breath" where it fit well, splitting words, etc. You can push this software very deep if you put some extra time on it (https://manual.synthv.info/phonemes/)

    I think it can even sing in French but you have to work at the phonemes level. I will try one day if I can find the time to do it

    We were certainly aiming for ‘creepy’ and think we succeeded :-)

    It’s a massive compliment that our tune was able to evoke any kinds of emotion and imagination, thanks again for listening and for your thoughtful feedback.

    Sorry posted in wrong thread before.
    Work in progress. Needs an ending.
    All done on iPad. Logic, Auria, gadget, weepingwall, Klevgrand percussion ones, the brush one, Shaka, luxe, timeless, scatterbrained, perforator, Hilda,

    All done in bed on phones cos I’m forever sick and feverish these days.
    Anyway it’s called MyCokaine

    Nice so far! I particularly like the combination of the growling bass and the keys on top.

    I have nothing bad to say about the mix. Everything seems clean and balanced. I think I would like to hear something else that thickens the stew, though. I don't know if that's saturation or what. It's probably a personal preference!

    lol, really nice!

    Coincidentally, the tune I’ve been messing around with also features Michael Caine. And Zulu warriors on backing vocals!

    Whoa!

    That was a nice transition from the acapella chant to the instruments coming in. I was genuinelly taken by surprise.

    I'm not a rapper and I almost want to start rapping over this beat.

    The brass providing the melody is beautiful as are the keys.

    I'm curious, if you don't mind revealing how you went about it, did you take the zulu chant as a base and build around it, or was it the other way around?

    My monthly submission: It's a ambient downtempo jazzy(?) fusion(?) composition.

    Some notes on this one:

    • all done in Logic Pro. Well, it's not perfect and it's pricey but it's the best DAW in IOS right now imho. The "auto drummer" is great and some of the internal instruments (I used Sculpture for the flute) are stunning. And the effects are also impressive (love ChromaVerb).
    • why didn't I buy Spacefields before?! Such a great and fun reverb, I love it on almost everything, drums included
    • there is a little bit of Patterning 3 in there :o

    I echo the earlier comments on the evolving drums. The flute tone is reminiscent of the flutes I've heard in some of the music from the Andes. I like the airy and spacey feel of the track.

    Nice instrumentals and nice vocal lines!

    I just started using the basic version of Synthesizer V and have decided to take the plunge and invest in Pro. Just need to decide on the voices I want.

    If you don't mind me asking, which voicebank did you choose for this track? Did you have to do any manual tuning?

    I'm going to look for an existing voice synth thread if there is one. I would love to hear more from the members here about how they're using these various synths.

    Second track from my Label.. Enjoy guys.. This is the Radio Edit.. ;-)

    Nice voice. Love the way the instrumentals and it are mixed. I like that it's uplifting too.

    I posted this in a separate topic, but I think it may qualify to be here too (I hope!). I had a previous version which was using a more vintage computer speech. The vocals on this new version sound much more realistic to my ears.

    As it happens, it's actually a mix of two different AI vocals processed in Apesoft's Sparkle. It took some fiddling but I got it to a point where I was satisfied.

    I have listened to both versions. All the instrumentation is beautifully put together and produced. It’s right up my street with a retro 80s tinge to it. Really nice. I’ll be honest, IMHO it is crying out for a real vocalist! The vocals follow a lovely melody. I don’t really have a preference between the two versions.

    Thank you so much for listening! I am still messing around with the synth voice, but I do want a real singer to try it. Maybe this is a good enough demo to entice someone. :)

    Cool track. I like the 80s inspired backing music and there are some nice melodies. To be truthful, I’m not a huge fan of the AI vocals. I think these kinds of synthetic vocals (such as vocoder which I think would suit the song well) work better when there are fewer lyrics and much less vocals overall in the arrangement. I’ve always kept the words to a minimum in my songs when I use vocoders for that reason as they can get annoying quickly.

    But it’s a good song nonetheless — whether or not you like the sound of the vocals is a taste thing. I’ve always liked vocoded vocals, but I have never liked the heavily auto-tuned vocal sound that these AI vocals remind me of.

    Thank you for listening and for the feedback!

    I feel like with enough skill some of these synth voices can be made very very human. Still, sometimes I wonder if it's just the fact of me not having a trained ear that makes me miss something that you guys can hear.

    Not to derail the thread, but I'd be curious to know your impressions of this synth voice cover of Adele:

    I like this track very much, I mean the music. I don’t really like the synthetic vocal and I think you can really improve it using a good voice. As you asked me, I am mainly using Solaria and sometime Asterian. They are both really easy to use, no need to “tune” them

    Firstly sorry for not replying sooner — I could have sworn I’d already posted but couldn’t find my reply.

    Good track. I like the backing and the main melody is strong. In places the vocals are very realistic but some of the glides and upper ranges sound a little unnatural. I’d personally reign in the overall pitch range of the vocals and keep them in narrower space.

    With a touch more restraint I probably wouldn’t have guessed it was a synthetic vocal!

    The pace of development with synthetic/AI vocals is frankly quite frightening!

  • @unlink said:

    @DavidEnglish your instruments are always so expressive, amazing. Did you ever make a track which has a more dynamic pace? Not complaining, just curious because I like your style and I was wondering if you also explored other territories and how.

    I tend to play too fast, so I purposely slow down the improvisations. Bitwig Studio make its very easy to try out different speeds for MIDI playback. I'll routinely scale it up or down in 5% increments until it sounds about right. The slower speeds just seem to suit the notes better.

    Haven't felt the need to go faster, but that could always change in the future.

  • @richardyot
    Smooth and easy-going instrumentals contrasted with heart-felt breakup lyrics. Polished production with especially strong vocals.

    @yellow_eyez
    Relaxed tune with churning guitar underneath. Feels like a tasty pot of stew that’s simmering on the stove. Smells good and is likely to pull a gathering crowd from the next room.

    @BillS
    Love how the instrumentation changes, grows, and develops as the song moves through its thoughtful lyrics. Wistful and resolute, while seeking solace in resolution.

    @klownshed
    A big ambitious piece that paints an open landscape that’s mostly bare but with darkly intense crags and fissures. Dramatic and deeply physical. An intriguing soundscape.

    @squeals
    Quirky song that’s wonderfully focused around Michael Caine. It’s like a tiny planet orbiting an oddly flickering star. I enjoyed the unexpected journey.

    @RonnieOmelettes
    Cool tune with a very fine Zulu chorus. The cherry on top is the masterful inclusion of Summertime’s opening notes. I half expected a voice quote from Billie Holiday or Lena Horne (similar to the one from Michael Caine) to close out the song.

    @unlink
    Terrific bass solo goes off into what almost sounds like a DIY junkyard-electronics orchestra. Shifts again to a piano accompanied by wide-ranging percussive instruments. A wonderfully open and exploratory song that follows the instruments and resulting sounds wherever they may lead.

    @Kmatic
    [Spotify wouldn’t let me play it without an account, which I don’t have.]

    @cuscolima
    Strong vocals with encompassing instrumentals. Wall-to-wall sound that could fill a large hall. Wraps around your head.

    @studs1966
    Super polished song, as usual. Terrific dance music professionally produced.

    @AlexY
    Odd voice that is squarely in the middle of an uncanny valley. I like the melody and overall tune. but do think a robotic voice would be a better fit for it.

    @JanKun
    Alternately frenetic, driving, and soaring. Feels like a throwback to the 1960s. Love how everything seems to change midway only to circle back. Intimate, yet epic. Neo-Retro-French-New-Wave? Was that Jean Seberg I saw sitting there in the audience waving her arms?

  • @AlexY yeah I like the suggestion. I think it does need a thickening agent to bind things together a bit.
    @unlink sorry thought I’d replied but the lens up must have kicked in (always sick this month grrr)
    yeah, panning partly down to being stuck in bed with headphones, possibly due to using a certain plugin (will investigate.) but mostly just due to my own laziness in the creation stage and my adhd in the mixing stage. But will take this on board going forward with it. Thank you
    @DavidEnglish thank you so much, ‘orbit’ my mates just offered me a ticket to orbital 5 minutes ago. Sorry, my heads a bit quirky as well for words and connections. Or this batch of lemsip has kicked in. 😂 thanks for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed it.
