My entry for the month, lyrics in the spoiler:

Even though I know your kind
You got your claws inside my mind
All the schemes that you conceive
All the tricks hidden up your sleeve

So play your ace before you leave
You love the game and to deceive
    An inveterate liar
    You scheme and conspire

    You laid it on me
    You played me
    I fell for you

    So it’s all on you
Do what you want to do

The time has come for me to say
That you and I go separate ways
I know you think I’m so naive
But I’m not as blind as you believe

So play your ace before you leave
You love the game and to deceive
    An inveterate liar
    You scheme and conspire

    You laid it on me
    You played me
    I fell for you

    So it’s all on you
Do what you want to do

Great tune as always. Any tips on getting vocals sounding so nice in that style of music? You keep them really nice and understated too.

    lol, really nice!

Coincidentally, the tune I’ve been messing around with also features Michael Caine. And Zulu warriors on backing vocals!

That’s really cool. It’s got a really laid back vibe. I like that.

Thanks - the vocal effects chain is fairly simple:

I use an LA2 style compressor (in my case the one from IK MixBox), the peak reduction is pretty strong but it keeps things sounding smooth.

Then I use the Xvox EQ to boost a little around 3k (Xvox seems to do a great job of this without ever sounding harsh), but you can do this with any EQ.

    I cut everything below 80hz.

And finally I use a generous amount of reverb, usually a chamber from DDMF MagicVerb, or the Digital reverb in Xvox, or both together.

Obviously the soft singing style and the stacked harmonies are also a big part of the sound. The harmonies are hard to nail, I think this is probably the best I've ever managed, each vocal track required 8 to 10 takes to get right.

    Hi all

Hope everyone is well. I'm really looking forward to listening to everyone's creations this month.

After an absence of a good few months I am glad to say I am writing songs again, and largely this is down to starting to learn the piano about 6 months go, which in turn has inspired me into new directions.

So this month's offering is a piano centric song - I am glad to say I can play this pretty much as you hear it on the track - the upside of this is that it is honest with very little midi editing, but the downside is that I am still at a very early stage with the piano, so I know it could be a lot better.

Lyrically, I am revisiting a theme I've delved into in the past, focusing on the difficulties some of us can face with relationships with adult children. The reference to the "man in the spotlight" and that night 34 years ago in NYC are two Mike and the Mechanics concerts - 34 years apart - Living Years explored the same theme as my song.

Thank you for listening - sorry it's 6 minutes long!

    As I Get Older

    As I get older
    Some people they get colder
Who did we think we were kidding?
What made us think we’d be winning?
The man in the spotlight was talking to me
Telling me all that I was unwilling to see

    A new generation
    With no explanation
    Making the same old mistakes
Taken as fools, whatever it takes
Now I’m in the spotlight with tears on my face
    I’m leaving this theatre I won’t leave a trace

Is your heart at peace, is your conscience clear?
Would you prefer it, if I was still here?
When the guilt kicks in in the middle of the night
And you paid lip service for most your life
You never phoned or sent that text
And you know why, but in retrospect / you knew best

    The years are going faster
I’d hope that it’d last, but
Now I know that’s not true
I can’t live my life through you
Seen it all through, some sad sense of duty
Pretending it’s real to make out that suits me

We imagined that somehow we’d be special
Man I think we were expecting some kind of medal
Take me back to that night in New York City
34 years makes me come over all kinda giddy
Is your heart at peace, is your conscience clear?
Would you prefer it, if I was still here?

Is your heart at peace, is your conscience clear?
Would you prefer it, if I was still here?
When the guilt kicks in in the middle of the night
And you paid lip service for most your life
You could wait for a call from beyond the grave
Or the here and now while it’s not too late

Impressive piano, especially as you’ve only been playing 6 months! I wish I could play that well — I’ve neglected keyboard skills thanks to the piano roll lol. I used to play keyboards in gigs - I should get back to letting my left hand do something too!

Good song, with nice clear vocals that tell a story — as does the arrangement which helps take you on that journey.

A very different take on the Michael Caine theme, the Zulu sample is perfect as a musical bed for the track, and lets the alternating piano and trumpet leads shine. The leads are extremely musical, really interesting melodies and I love the way the trumpet interweaves with and sometimes echoes the piano parts.

This is a music track that I improvised on two MIDI keyboards connected to Bitwig Studio on a desktop PC. There the MIDI was routed to Solo for the flute, as well as to Lunaris 2, Omnisphere, and Repro-5 for the background instruments.

After bringing the audio recording into Vegas Pro, I applied the Lurssen Mastering Console plug-in to the audio mix.

    It's titled The River.

Peaceful and gentle. Really nice as usual. Lovely flute melodies with just the right amount of modulation to keep the flute sounding organic. I like the background 'drone' too.

The Michael Caine samples make you want to hear the story and the odd synth line quickly becomes a hook.

‘MyCokaine’ ‘Michael Caine’. l see what you you did there :-)

There’s a Graham Norton interview where they talk about saying my cocaine very fast is how you impersonate him. He tells a story about being at a fancy party in the Philippines and the hostess keeps looking at him disapprovingly before asking him if he’s a drug dealer. When he says no, she asks why everyone keeps asking him for ‘my cocaine.’

The long speech is from this.

Some of the other bits are him doing an impersonation of Peter sellers impression of him. The others are rob brydon and Steve coogan.

  • Hi fellow SOTMC members!
As usual listened to all songs, nice stuff here!

@richardyot I really liked the singing and the lyrics on this one, which is rare for me since I'm mostly an "instrumental" guy. Not commenting much on the arrangement since it's always very good and leaves enough room for the vocals.

@yellow_eyez great guitars, the reverb and delay give them a lovely "floating" effect. Also great drums to support it. If something, I would have loved a bit more variation.

@BillS wow, nice piano playing for a 6 months player! I really love the chorus with the guitars, perfectly nailed. You said you did little midi editing which is fine to keep it more "natural", I would have done a bit of quantization because sometimes the piano is a bit too off.. at least for my taste

@DavidEnglish your instruments are always so expressive, amazing. Did you ever make a track which has a more dynamic pace? Not complaining, just curious because I like your style and I was wondering if you also explored other territories and how.

@klownshed another amazing movie soundtrack! I loved everything, especially the cello (yes I have a fetish for cellos lol)

@squeals nice track! The bass rocks. The panning of some instruments drove me nuts but after a while I just loved it lol. Doesn't really need another ending? Unless you changed the track already.. also perhaps the master is a bit too low.

@RonnieOmelettes the Zulu vocals are great, and I love the solo at around 2 minutes. Very chilled track, absolutely enjoyable.

My monthly submission: It's a ambient downtempo jazzy(?) fusion(?) composition.

    Some notes on this one:

    • all done in Logic Pro. Well, it's not perfect and it's pricey but it's the best DAW in IOS right now imho. The "auto drummer" is great and some of the internal instruments (I used Sculpture for the flute) are stunning. And the effects are also impressive (love ChromaVerb).
    • why didn't I buy Spacefields before?! Such a great and fun reverb, I love it on almost everything, drums included
    • there is a little bit of Patterning 3 in there :o

I really like this piece. It just works. Nice drums, good pacing, hits nicely at 1:30, I like your main flute voice with that bass undertone. Great layers. Sounds like guitars around 3:00 and they are a great resolution to the open area of the beginning to giving structure to the finale. (How MUCH patterning is in there? Lmao)

Thanks for the comments. I’m working on variations (that was an ABAB piece , next will be ABCABC. I’m imposing structure on my prog style jam inspired works)

I love this, it reminds me of some of the 90s and 00s downtempo stuff I still listen to and love: Kruder and Dorfmeister, Mescalito etc...

The bassline is what makes it, it's the perfect scaffold to build the track around, the drum groove is perfect and then all the synths just weave around that to create a really hypnotic track that's well arranged and interesting throughout. Great job.

Really nice. The ethnic flute sounds ace. There's much originality in the melody lines and in particular in the way that the different instruments interact with each other. And that bass...beautiful.

And thanks for listening to my track. I need to work on tightening up my timing on the piano.

  • @yellow_eyez said:

Not much actually, just a little help to the main drum track, but combined with Spacefields the result is great. I'm cooking another track which has a lot more P3 but I'm not sure it will be ready before the official P3 release lol (well, probably yes but I still need quite some time).

  • Funky bassline and beat. It might have been nice to have a little more variation in there but it bounces along nicely. Love the samples.

  • Cool track, (the way this thing works , just saying, it’s kinda like take a penny leave a penny; not to be that guy but we also wanna know what your thoughts are  )

Not at all, it was pretty easy because Logic Pro does a lot of the stuff automatically if you use his drummer module! I just added another layer with Patterning 3 but it the pattern is super simple so really low effort.

Nice laid back drums with a cool groove, and lots of musical elements keeping things interesting. Good track. I like it a lot. The flute sounds pretty great. I’ve used sculpture a lot over the years but never really explored more realistic sounds with it.

I’ll have to spend some time with the Logic drummer. I use its drum loops quite a lot - the Neon synthwave ones are great, but haven’t explored the other features much.

Thanks. I’m a sucker for the cello too. I have a couple that are stellar : The one in Spitfire Audio’s Abbey Road library is just like Eleanor Rigby. And there’s one in Musio from the band Apocalyltica that is fantastic for aggressive and electric cellos.

I used the Abbey Road iconic strings on another tune I posted to the forum.

I’m really enjoying making music with orchestral samples.

Thanks for listening too :-) I’m glad you liked it.

Any and all feedback welcome— it’s always nice to talk about making music.

  • Hey there, I woke up this morning with something in my head and tried to play it first on my IPhone for the generic idea then finalized it on Ableton. One of these day where “the flow” catch you the whole time. Hope you like it

  • @richardyot
What a crystal clear track. I like very much your rendering and the chords you are using here. Nice guitar too. I agree with the "Floydesque feel"

    @yellow_eyez
Your track sounds even more "Floydesque" than richardyot's. It really miss a singer here, I can easily hear Gilmore singing something here. Ask him ;O)

    @Bills
Beautiful piano. At almost 50 your song sounds very sad to me but it is very well made and sounds great

    @DavidEnglish
Peaceful track. I like the flute. Are you using a breath MIDI controller to do that ?

    @klownshed
I am very impressed with this track, with all the events that are changing all the time. It give the envy to continue listening to it to hear where it goes. Professionaly made

    @RonnieOmelettes
Amazing...my track of the month. Cool piano fitting perfectly with the different samples you using. Love the brass too

Seriously thanks so much! That’s a huge compliment

As for your track, I’m kinda shocked. Your melodies are beautiful, your voice is incredible and I loved the flow you caught. If you did this in one day I’m blown away.

As a matter of fact, I would love for you to sing on one of my songs soon if you’re up for it. I think my music with a voice like yours would work perfectly.

    lol, really nice!

Coincidentally, the tune I’ve been messing around with also features Michael Caine. And Zulu warriors on backing vocals!

Listened to this a couple of times - what a great track. Would love to know more about how it was made. The Zulu warriors’ hook is pure ear candy! Instrumentation- particularly the piano and the trumpet interplay beautifully. Really fine listen and strangely catchy too.
