Is there midi learn? There definitely is in the desktop version but I can’t see it on iOS version…

Covered in my Patreon vid!: long press to get midi learn and other options appearing.

  • Own it on both Mac and iOS now. Great app.

Ok. By trial and error i figured out that long-holding the hamburger icon next to presets list brings up a “ learn midi assignment “ option, but then what? Nothing seems to change on the UI. Usually when you’re about to midi learn something the parameters change colour or are highlighted in some way.

  • This has to be one of the first times I’ve used a midifx AU that has not caused things like dropped or hung midi notes when you really push it into weird territories in a looong time .

  • Must have plugin for hypnotic Techno!

I love this! Thanks for making it available on iOS!

___>! An initial question… Is there a way to make it so that the note input acts as an arp? So basically I hold keys and those are the only notes that play as it spins?

    Spoiler

If it’s possible I’m not seeing how… I guessed there was maybe an option in scale for something like “as played” but not seeing it.

If not, possible to add that?~~~~___

Nm… figured it out. I was pressing the wrong icon/ignoring the correct on next to note set…

When you send midi input, does it ignore its own internal scale settings?

After watching the well over 2hr live demo of Harmony Bloom by @MarioNieto andI was amazed at how deep it is.

During the live demo @MarioNieto turned on a feature that gives a popup for what the various controls do. He was using the desktop version and I was told that you can enable this in the settings, but I haven't been able to find where to enable this in the iPad version. Anyone know? figured out you can see what each feature does on iPad by long pressing any given feature icon

Also, there's a setting that gets rid of the interface so that you just see the cool spiral going graphic/animation. Is there a way to project this out via airplay or hdmi... only project out the animation graphic, but still have the controls show on your ipad so that you can edit the sequence without the interface showing on the projected motion graphic?

  • @MarioNieto +1 if we can have spectator mod pop up in another instance synced or something.... Would be great for performance art. It's such a beautiful app!

  • Anyone got any more clues about midi learn?

  • You hold, movr to midi learn, then just move your controller. I set up my nanokontrol easily that way.

  • @MarioNieto I love how you can set the midi out of each bar to different midi channels when running standalone, but it doesn’t look like you can also do this while hosted as AU. Or, is that already possible and I’m missing a setting somewhere?

  • Wow this is a neat app. Genius idea. Having some big fun with it!

This is from the online manual ‘Trigger bars that can be mapped/output to different midi channels. (ONLY IN STANDALONE), incompatible with DAWs like Ableton due to their internal routing limitations that merge all MIDI messages’

    https://harmonybloom.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/Harmony+Bloom+1.2.3/Harmony+Bloom+1.2.3+Manual.pdf

Would be great to see a future update to route Trigger Bars to different channels in AUM/Cubasis etc

I figured this was likely the case. All I did instead was run it in standalone and send the various channels into the host (Nodes) with different synths mapped to specific channels. Worked fine

Ableton has the worst VST midi routing, but other daws like Bitwig, Cubase, AUM,band Logic are fine. Would be great to see multi-channel output in AU on iOS and desktop.

Good to know, wonder if that will work the same for AUM? 🤔

Could you share your set up to help me and others?

You just got to your channel settings in AUM for each channel you set up. You'll see that ALL of the channels are "on" by default. There's a button to turn them all off, then just turn on the channel you want. Then set up Harmony to send midi out and specify which channel you want each bar to send to. You should see Hamony in AUM or Nodes as a possible midi in. Just select it.

    It's pretty straight forward

In Nodes, select the node settings by clicking the midi icon at the top of the node. Then where it ways "Nodes Midi in" select the channel you want that node to be. Same thing.

It sure does... But if you have max for live, you can at least use multichannel vests with this:

    https://maxforlive.com/library/device/9448/multi-midi-vst-wrapper

Works with reason rack for example.

  • Hint/tip…

Harmony Bloom pairs really well with Art Kerns midiGATEs (mg) to thin the stream in a performance as well as create some controllable, musical rhythms.

These two might just be the end of my search for a controllable, robust, and musical semi-generative sequencing setup…

I set up a midi track in AUM to feed 3 synths…

    Harmony Bloom feeds…
Mg 1 = highs feeds synth transposed +1 octave
    Mg 2 = mids feeds non-transposed synth
Mg 3 = lows feeds -1 octave transposed synth

Then each mg can be played with during the performance to add or remove notes using mg’s various gating and sequencing modes…

Makes for a very expressive way to jam with a lot of musically rational options with very few controls to worry about.

I tried this a while ago, but it was messy at best. They need to solve this natively. I use other daws when I want to route midi.

  • Something else I found that’s not obvious (at least it wasn’t to me)…
Even if you have daw sync on and note input mode off, it still responds to note input to set the bottom/root note… So you can get progressions going by sending in notes from another sequencer, but still use the note collections.

Or of course set note input to on and send inc chords to use it as an arp.

Any way to keep the sequence playing in the background when switching between EG Nodes and HB or AUM and HB?

    = Background Audio ✅

I’m I right in thinking there’s no BPM syncing to AUM/Nodes using this standalone method?

I don't know. I only bought this late last night and have barely played with it yet.

  • Is there any kind of song mode for switching between patterns, or would one need to set up different instances in Nodes and switch between those instead?

  • @Jökulgil said:
Got a couple of sessions going in Standalone with AUM and EG Nodes per @skiphunt and then a session hosted in AUM with Scaler 2 sending chords into HB and then to Pure Upright.

For anyone who hasn’t seen it yet, it’s worth scanning through one of the livestreams where @MarioNieto (The HB Dev) shows just how powerful and inspiring HB can be.

Just need to translate his desktop session into the iOS ecosystem and we’ll be off and running!

My sessions are a long way off what Mario can do. Here’s the livestream that sparked it all off for me.

    https://www.youtube.com/live/xXuApWwyGqY?si=PE7a8cbO6vDETcQb

Yeah, I was only going to watch a little of that live stream and try to win a redeem code ;) but, I ended up watching pretty much the whole thing. I was amazed at how well thought out this app is and how versatile. I was hesitant to buy yet another midi sequencer... but, these devs and smaller app dev companies just keep pushing the envelope and coming up with such creative and innovative new ways to do the same thing... we really need to do whatever we can to support them.

  • Yes please! Where there’s a will there’s a way!

  • A resize window option for desktop would be nice too.

  • @MarioNieto - congrats on this amazing release! Easily my favourite sequencer; it is endlessly inspiring!
I have noticed that when I try to subtly adjust parameters with my finger, the iPad keyboard appears (to allow values to be manually inputted)….but it would be better if that only happened with a long-hold. Most of the time, the appearance of the keyboard disrupts my workflow.

  • I think I have figured out midi learn now.
Next question: is it possible to send some notes to one synth and other notes to a different synth? Using one instance of HB I mean.
I understand that I could open multiple instances of Harmony Bloom,….just wondering if one pattern could be distributed across 3 or 4 different instruments

Use a few instances of some kind of note filtering app like MidiGATEs, as MonkeyDrummer mentioned in a post above. MidiGATEs is phenomenally useful for that kind of thing, with a much better UI experience than Mozaic, though there might be some Mozaic instances that can also do this kind of thing.

  • Thanks @Gavinski , yep I saw @MonkeyDrummer 's suggestion - was going to try that
So, do you mean I would save the current state in HB as a preset, then open that same preset in say, 2 other instances of HB, and then use MG to influence what is/isn't permitted through?

No need to do that! Midi gates has various ways to filter notes. You could send the midi to, say, 2 instances of midi gates. In each midi gates instance you could filter each instance’s notes in certain ways - eg. Send the first few notes in an octave of the scale to one instrument and send the other notes to a different instrument. You could allow some overlap so that certain notes, like a root note and a fifth, or whatever, go to both instruments. You could also use a tool like Rozeta scaler to pitch those midi notes going out of the midi gates instances up or down.

MidiGATEs is so good for this stuff because the UI lends itself very well to being used during live performance.
