and I just bought a little emulator handheld... smh

Which one did you get? I got the Miyoo Mini Plus for my birthday last year. There’s still a lot to be said for a dedicated device I reckon.

Got the rg35xx h in a massive sale. It's great I mostly wanted to play Pico 8 and all the new indie Gameboy games and it's awesome for that. It's becoming a bit overwhelming though. So much to tinker with!!!

Just the ability to have a limitless selection of indie micro games is fantastic.

Nice! It was a toss up for me between that and the Miyoo. I went with the Miyoo because of the networking features. I can transfer stuff from my iPad wirelessly which is great. I much preferred the look of the rg35xx though. The form factor looks like it’s nicer to hold. It is overwhelming though, it’s a massive rabbit hole to go down :)

Me too, just bought an Anbernic RD35XX H. It's cool but not as powerful as my Android phone and, obviously nowhere near as powerful as M1 iPad.

Overwhelming is putting it mildly! I'm spending far more time fiddling around with it than actually playing games!

TBH it's mainly my crappy laptop's fault - it refuses to read any Micro SD. I haven't found a way to access it through USB or WiFi file transfer. Been fiddling around for hours now :#

Now that emulators are perfectly legal on the App Store, there’s only one obvious thing to do.

    Delta Emulator is available here:
    https://apps.apple.com/ph/app/delta-game-emulator/id1048524688

Sorry I missed this, when were they made legal? I remember the scumm one
I’m in the uk. So the new eu thing altstire doesn’t apply. But this would be something different?

Apple changed their App Store policy on emulators a couple of weeks ago. They are allowing them now so you can pick this up from the UK AppStore no problem. In the EU you need AltStore to get Delta but that’s just because they are made by the same dev and he wants people to use his store. Edit: Apparently it’s more complicated than that. There’s a really good overview of the emulator here with a bit more detail about the EU situation. Sounds like it’s something to do with the charges Apple wants to apply.

Ahhh man this is so cool. I was fiddling with dolphin on android for ages trying to play the original shenmue before rerelease. Dosbox would be yummy, I really want to play some old Amiga games.

Oh god, and ps1 etc for some old games I forgot

Glad to hear it calms down... For the moment I've installed MuOS and am now installing more games I won't play via portmaster

  • I wouldn't mind some Atari ST emulator that would support midi ;)

MuOs is an alternative OS yeah, it's clean and quick and being developed by some really nice people: https://muos.dev/

And portmaster is a project devoted to porting old and newer indie games to the handhelds: https://portmaster.games/

not every game is available yet, but Rg35xx h is gonna get a 64 bit kernal very soon which should make almost every game compatible.

I'm porting a GB/GBC/GBA/NDS emulator wrapped into SwiftUI for Japanese (and soon other) language learning purposes, with stuff like realtime OCR of text on screen and vocab lookups.

Anyway while I'm at it I wonder if it'd be nice to have this embedded into an AUv3 too. I wonder what I could do to make it nicer as an instrument (or effect? are there?) in an AUv3 context. It could even be something like a sample player that works via load states and play/pause.

I can do native iOS but I'm planning to use the WASM version in a webview so that it's easier to put into an existing app and UI. I hope it's fast enough for all these interesting use cases.

It would be fun to try to add touch interactivity to some of these synth apps also.

That sounds fun, I’m sure there’s a few homebrew carts that could be used this way, though is it not insanely complex wrapping an emulator into a plugin?

I knew the right questions to ask gpt4 and I got halfway there! I’m already familiar with the emulator codebase now and I’m learning auv3 dev via AudioKit which is pretty simple to learn and well understood by chatgpt.

The real fun will be later adding features like midi control of load state and game switch stuff so you can run the emulator like a sampler via save states

And having a series of lsdj concurrently. Since I’m porting the emulator to a SwiftUI component using Metal it’s easy to add several instances at once. Maybe use two for detuned stereo playback

Add advanced features like note/freq mute! To mute/solo ranges of a rom’s output instead of doing it in post

  • I’m pretty sure I have virtually every rom available cos I cracked my 3Ds to homebrew for all the emulators. I guess it’s time to see how they all work

I mostly play rpg games and have a big love for the jrpg stuff. I’m mostly using it for the ds emulation but here’s a few of my favorites that I have right now. For good lists, I would just search for Reddit posts for whichever system you’re interested in. Here’s some of the stuff I find a lot of fun for ds though

Chrono Trigger, Dragonball games, Dragon Quest games, Etrian Odyssey, Final Fantasy, Fire Emblem, Front Mission, Harvest Moon games, Zelda and Mario always rule, Orcs and Elves reminds me of old DOS style Elder Scrolls, Phantasy Star 0, Phoenix Wright is way more fun than I expected, I love Pokémon games cos they’re a solid jrpg, Radiant Historia, Ragnarok, Rune Factory, Shin Megami, and I’m about to check out some ds tony hawk games but don’t have high hopes

If you do a search on archive.org for rom sets you’ll find a load of curated Rom packs. This one for example is quite a good place to start:

    https://archive.org/details/128gb

  • I kinda just meant music apps in particular, I’ve got a few of those kinds of Rom packs and they always give me the fear 😅

  • Want an elektron for your GBA emulator!?
