Morning all. Here’s my May offering

Full on synth and it’s mainly about the Melodies in the chorus. All done within Logic pro iOS with a mix of inbuilt patches and iM1. I created the video using a mix of google earth studio, some drone footage and basically staring 80s New Romantic style into the camera :) - edited within davinci resolve.

    Hope you enjoy

Love the dark arp in the beginning. I dig the part that first comes in around :38 and like the contrast between that part, that's big and dramatic, and the other main themes which are more subdued. The part around 1:05 that drops down to bass and a pad is cool, and I like how the video shifts to shots of being in flight.

  • I don’t remember this guy commenting or engaging so pass…(unless he chimes in on all of our work)

  • Here’s my entry. A remix that’s about as far away from the original as possible. Stripping the vocal track left behind some interesting things. Only vocal was used.

This is really good. I think your mix is amazing here. Something really pops out articulately. Nice rhythmic choices and I like the acoustic sounds. Awesome vocals and lyrics

    @kmatic

Nice track . Reminds me of the 90s club songs but with better modulation. I like the filter sweeps too. Fun song.

Very nicely produced club track. Not a genre I listen to so I'm no expert but this sounds like a commercial remix release to me.

The original is a cool track... I'd never hear that before.

Did you use a stem splitter to get the vocal or did you find an a cappella?

  • edited May 2024

@klownshed thank you so much! That’s quite possibly the nicest comment I’ve ever received.

Tbh it’s a little more overground than what I normally do. I started with one idea and as elements get added in it just became clearer that it’s going in that direction. Over the years I’ve learnt to go with the flow in that respect.

I used Moises to split the track. There’s reverb and drum artifices left in the vocal by the software. It’s software that can throw up lovely surprises. At first it was a real pain. I wasn’t getting a clean vocal but I leaned into it. In places I left the reverb wash between vocal lines in to add a darker layer. When removed it creates a clean lift. I also used those elements to create some fx, which tie nicely to the vocal for transitions.
There was an interview with Loyle Carner and his producer on a podcast about making his new album. He talked about stripping samples in Moises, it leaving weird things behind and how eventually they would deliberately run their own sounds through Moises to deliberately get weird glitches. So that’s kinda where I got the idea to use what I can, that and the one synth, one break challenge I suppose. Accept the things that limit us and get creative. That gave me the confidence to keep going with it I suppose.

That’s a rather long way of saying splitter, but I find that stuff interesting, so thought you might too. 🤣

Now that Logic has a stem splitter built in I'm kind of expecting more things like this, with people making remixes by isolating the vocals.

    It's interesting stuff for sure.

As for artefacts, there's an app on desktop that amplifies the sounds that lossy audio compression like mp3s toss away. You can run your mix through it, isolate the stuff that would be removed and use those sounds in you mix in all sorts of creative ways.

Pardon my break in commenting and delay in posting mine. But here it is for May.

produced on TE OP-1 Field - Mastered in Logic Pro for IPad 2

Pretty melody- I might call it plaintive, haunting and actually rather beautiful. Great listen! Production is top rate too.

  • @squeals wow, really impressive and professional sounding production. Emotion running through those vocals, which are delivered perfectly. Really, really enjoyed this one

    Hey @yellow_eyez

This tune sets a nice somber mood. I enjoyed your choice of sounds. Lots of variety throughout. All of the parts sounded like they were played live, so the tune had a nice authentic feel. When the drums drop out at the end (around 2:12), it sounded like the synth lead went out of time. I'm not sure if that was intentional or not.

I didn't listen to the original. This is a great track. The singer's voice has a lot of character so you had a good starting point. Really tasty synth and bass parts. The parts complement the vocals really well. Great grooves. Your parts leave great space for the vocal to ring through.

  • I’m new to this thread but I’ve been jamming out to the jams. Gotta say we got some talent in here!

  • @yellow_eyez thank you so much! I never had a track with a vocal that comes in early, it really changes how things fit.
@klownshed I’ve saved that and will deffo be using it. Big thank you.
    @BillS @ecamburn thanks so much.
When I heard Dans new song I thought that vocal performance has something unique about it. The way it cracks a little in places, it’s quite beautiful. It put me in mind of what I call ‘sad bangers’ those disco tunes that connect lyrically. The timing of the vocal, that little bit preceding the 1st beat had to be respected, it’s that which gives it character. But it’s kind of hard to work with, especially speeded up. So I’m really happy with the outcome.
Can I also say a big thanks for the nice comments, I have been feeling a bit of imposter syndrome recently.

Nice! The OP-1 is really a nice piece of gear. The middle part is super cool and interesting, catchy piano melody. The drums are a bit too loud for my taste.

Immediately I know where I am when I’m listening to that. I’m hopefully on a rooftop terrace at a mysterious last minute location, late June, suns out, nice glass of pims or beer in a green bottle. (No really, that’s a thing I’m doing if I get a sitter sorted 🤣)

The synth element that comes in at about 17 seconds I thought was too busy and I’d maybe trim the second half of the bar or shorten the notes by a very small fraction, but on third listen, I’m wrong, it works fine.

I’m LOVING nearly every thing about that first breakdown. The transition into it is class, the vocal and that filtering glitchyness, just great. The drop doesn’t land so well to my ears. Either a silence, a high hat run, let the wash run on and filter it some, to build tension a little more. There’s a high hat that’s filtered out and comes back ever so slightly at 1:06 plays twice then drops out for third time that might be tricking my ear also. It just feels like it comes in a little sunddenly and or without landing. That could be cos my phone isn’t the sound system this is meant to be heard on. So you are absolutely right to tell me where to go.

The second drop works so much better, possibly because the filtering is different. The vocal works better at the end and there is actually a wee high hat hit at 2.32 that signposts the transition. The vocal on the other side ties in and makes the whole thing for me.

About there’s some fx at 1:21 1:24. I love the double thing, but stylistically I’d only have that synth chord land the second time, no drums coming after, just to emphasis that chord resolution. Might work, might not but I say that because, those synth chords are STYlISH AFC!! I ❤️ them. (There more I listen, the more I would just leave it 🤣)
Track is really balanced, really nice sound choices. Love the filtering at the end.

As always, feel free to say I’m talking shite. Just thought I’d share my observations but tbh the track is cool.

Not my genre, but I liked it. The synth patch at around 1:30 is great, and I liked how you built the whole track around the vocals, they really shine. A nice club remix!

My submission for the month. I wanted to post another track but I'm not really sure about that one so I'll ask for your opinion.

It's an electronic/ambient track, I experimented a bit with vocal choirs and new apps (Nerd Synth). God I love distortion effects so much :D Also Patterning 3 is a really great piece of software.

  • @unlink cheers dude.
I wish I could remember what I used. Cos I like it too. Note to adhd self, save patches! Make notes! Remember where notes are!
I think it might be DRC, there maybe some baby audio pitch free app, very small amount. but it’s deffo run through Bram perforator. I really gel with that app.

Lol yes I feel you :D I try to make paper notes about what I did but often I forget and then I'll need to "read" the piano roll and trying to figure out how the heck I made that part. But I got burned too often with patches so at least I'm saving them often :-)

I really like this, the backwards-sounding patch is excellent, and the keys melody is great. The whole arrangement is really interesting and flows well, and the vibe is beautifully atmospheric. Great job.

Thanks very much. (Yes I played it live…good ear… and yes the end was meant to lose tempo and slow; like it fell into a fugue)
Thanks for the close listen man.

Thanks a lot . You know I tried twice to bring the drums lower in the mix so imagine the first two mixes lol…. Illl lower more but thanks man and op1 field rules

As for your track it’s very pretty and sometimes crazy+ scary too , like the drums a lot. And That was made with patterning?. Cool synth and combustor use at 3;00 with the choir . Cool mix of stuff and synths

Thank you Bill. Those are wonderful descriptions and I appreciate it. I really tried to mix it well and the logic ai helped with mastering. Thanks a lot man

🙏🙏🙏🔥🔥🔥👍👍👍isn’t enough brother - you need to type out replies and critiques . Otherwise your not IN the SOTMC your just leaving songs for us to listen to , which if that’s the case, just leave it in creations in your own thread man . It’s fine whatever you choose but the first post clearly states you are supposed to not just have us listen to your work and give feedback but also expect it from you .

    SOTMC works on Reciprocity boys

    Am I right? @richardyot and @klownshed

I mean we should start to make sure we all chip in I think.

  • And That was made with patterning?

Yeah the drum sounds and the sequence are from Patterning, and the reverb effect is Spacefields.

Also I agree on your last post about the engagement, same goes for @matdun25848834 I'd say.

Oh yeah, I had him on ignore as I think he has done it before . So def. In fact, that’s why I didn’t comment on his post, and I’ll remove my feedback for the other guys….

No one is going to stop you from posting in this thread but If you don’t leave feedback , don’t expect any.

If I see people just posting a song and then not reciprocating with feedback, I just ignore them. If people aren't willing to take the time to listen and comment on all the work that's posted in this thread, they're not worth engaging with.
