Do so, I tested both together in AUM yesterday and it became a project to save and get back to
Yep - not there in Audiobus either - Strokes shows up fine, but no sign of Stacks anywhere
How do you access the presets? It says “no choices” when I try to load them.
I don't think there are any. I saved a few of my own and those are all I can see.
I would love to hear how this can be used for ambient tracks...
I got it last night.
I think it would be amazing for ambient. It is easy (and fun) to get things started, and you quickly enters happy accidents that still can be controlled.
Look at this video. It will give you an idea
spent a few hours with Stacks last night. the UI is a lot to take in, but it's actually a lot more straightforward than Strokes. Once you get the workflow down, it's quick to lock ideas in and make progress
key controls are the level for the native synth and each looper, once you can turn those on or off you get a lot less confused and can focus on each part better
the synth section is great, love the waveforms (found bank B especially thick) and filter modes.
the modulators are very helpful, lots on offer here between the X/Y, LFOs, envelope, sequencer etc. the mod matrix helps you remember what's going on and can easily be reset for a blank slate
the looper modes offer a lot of options to nudge your sound slightly or use it to build something completely new
in terms of applying all this fun goodness to an end goal, there's a lot of options available. i personally can't picture myself using it as live on-the-spot groovebox, but can see this being a great way for people that way inclined. i'd more likely set a few loops up beforehand and have a planned attack of how to perform them with the onboard controls (likely through individual outputs as well). can also see myself using the synth by itself without recording it - it has just the right balance of depth and simplicity to quickly nail a tone
Hmmm...my app budget is getting a bit tight so I think I'll pass...
Is it possible to use this simply as a 4 track granular sample player/ looper and just manipulate the audio?
I’m not really interested in the sequencer or synths engine aspect of this, but if I could import 4 audio files of croaking frogs, water sounds, field recs etc then I may take a punt.
Yep, you can do that 👍
Cool. Thanks @FordTimeLord
And to save me scrolling through the manual, any idea what (if any) , is the maximum length of time each audio file can be?
Would be super cool if I could have 4 tracks of several minutes playing simultaneously
It doesn’t appear to have a limit. It seems to be just what your device can handle. I’m guessing it doesn’t use disk streaming as I don’t have much RAM and it crashes with long files. You may have better luck if you have a newer device.
The preset manager has a lot left to hope for, there are no factory presets and no way of loading either. Presets I saved in S.A does not show in AuV3 and vice versa. I tried to move stuff from iCloud to iPad but nothing changed. @congburn
Cool. Cheers
Me too, but I was looking forward to this one. Doesn’t seem to be much of a buzz about it though - no iOS vids, apart from a single one from the dev, no preset demos…
A bundle deal with the other app might tempt me to part with my twenty quid, or some third-party vids, but it’s all a bit….quiet….
The loading presets thing is a bug he’s acknowledged on Discord. It sounds like he’s planning some kind of preset sharing as well. He posted a zip with a few the other day. Just no way to load it yet
There are very few people making vids in this space and they may not have the time or motivation to make vids on everything! Was a busy enough week already with OneShot and then Loop Mangler. Plus, John, the dev, makes his own walkthrough vids. This has no presets btw, so no preset demos would be possible either!

If only they were walkthrough. Sprint more like.....
Yeah, and he talk so fast he swallows his own words. Filterbank became fe'bk and I was confused as * for a minute.😂
Haha - this is true, yes, they are too fast for most, I’d imagine! They’re fast for me, that’s for sure
Erm, it wasn’t a personal criticism. Just noticing it’s been a bit quiet, feedback-wise, compared to other recently released apps.
No worries, I definitely didn’t take it as a personal criticism. I just see that kind of surprised reaction fairly often here when there is an app out that has no vids on it from any of the main iOS YouTube crowd, and it is a good chance to remind people that it is not really realistic to expect that there will always be vids up quickly on every app that comes out. Lack of vids can sometimes mean that an app is not interesting. Stacks is definitely interesting and powerful tho, and there will likely be vids on it by some folk at some point! I dunno about other people, mind you, but I get app fatigue from checking out new stuff constantly, gets overwhelming.
IOS update fixed the problem - happy days😬
Is there a manual anywhere? Can only find a “quickstart guide” on the website .
This is making my brain hurt as much as Strokes did to be honest. Can’t figure out how to assign LFOs to stuff, can’t figure out how to replace the audio files I’ve imported with new ones…..
Also, be warned folks, I’m using this on a 6th gen 2018 iPad and the knobs and faders are pretty damn tiny. There’s no way on earth I could use this in a live setting…..
@Kashi tap the lfo icon above a controller and it becomes active. Then drag your finger across the thing you want to modulate. Then tap the lfo icon again to tell it you are done.
Also, to the right side of a sample there is a square stop button. Tap it and wait. It then becomes a bin icon to remove the sample.
Got it! Thanks so much @rud
Feel similarly. The parameter names get cut off at the top in AUM for me on my 5 yr. old iPad Pro.
I found Strokes pretty easy to use for the most part. I think it assumes some degree of familiarity with modulation in a modular synth environment. That might be a stumbling block.
Or perhaps I got lucky and my brain works like Cong Burn's brain.
Strokes is easier for me than Igor's apps. I have to spend enough time with it to know how everything is interconnected.
