I don’t know much at all about west coast synthesis, though i very much enjoy using Hilda.

My lack of knowledge means I can’t work out whether this offers things which Hilda doesn’t?

    Does it?

Yes it's different from Hilda, it's pretty much a clone of the buchla Easel, a legendary 60s semi modular synth. There are a lot more modulation possibilities with VApolywest, so it's more suited for generative special effects stuff. Having said that Hilda can get a much more aggressive sound and does a great "broken sound" if that's what you want!

I don’t think you could do a self playing patch quite like this in HILDA, I could be proven wrong though!!

Thanks @sevenape, really appreciate the advice. Enjoyed the clips you linked to too. Cheers.

    Heh! Welcome!

  • It would be nice to be able to play this monophonically, not just poly. Seems like a strange omission considering it’s based on a monophonic synth.

  • Now that it’s on sale and everyone got to know it a little better, how’s it holding up so far? I resisted getting it at first since miRack is what I mostly use for everything and I know my way around it. But now I’m tempted again!

I got quite excited about it and bought it a few weeks back. It sounds great, but I find the interface inscrutable (I’m a patch cable person), and I’ve found myself giving up on it after a few minutes each time I’ve opened it because of that. This is not to diss the app (before anyone throws a fit), but if you like MiRack you may find multiple rows of almost identical knobs annoying/frustrating/a buzzkill.

That’s a very good point. I guess I’ll stick with Nysthi then 👍 Thanks!

I was also perplexed by so many controls. Then I realized that the bottom 3 rows of the synth controls are always a trio of: Control, CV Int, Source. The CV Int is the intensity of modulation of the Control by the selected Source. The modulation Source options are always the same, and the Source selector changes color to match the section providing the source. So you can see at a glance which parameters are being modulated in a given patch. Also, you can tap on any control to see its name and value in the display window.

Also, the knob names are always above the knob, but they are confusingly closer to the knob above the name.

I think setting up something like this in miRack would give me conniptions. I love the virtual modular stuff I have, but this is cleaner for me. It’s nice and simple but also has enough modulation choices to not feel at all limited ( except for a more aggressive wave folder perhaps). The effects sound good enough, but with extra effects processing it really shines.

Maybe if you are more comfortable than me with miRack this is unnecessary but I like having a mini buchla easel-esque thing on my iPad. Everything is on one screen, no scrolling or menu diving and all the cables are prepatched and hidden away!

I’ve yet to actually make a song with it, but I like doing little sketches like this:

  • Good thoughts, I was surprised by this synth and found the generative presets amazing! Cheers whatever coast right, we need em all.

Thanks for the tip about the modulation source selector changing colour. I hadn’t noticed that - it’s way too subtle! The fact that I had to launch it just now to see if it did that says it all.

Like I said previously, it sounds great, I just don’t vibe with the interface. Which is a shame, as like @sevenape says, having a mini Easel type of synth on the iPad is great. I just wish it had virtual cables and/or shorting blocks.
