I don’t understand how companies with significant development resources can’t manage to get their apps working for OS updates on what is probably their largest platform… They have had over 3 months…
I suspect that trying to ensure an app works across all platforms has something to do with it. Gotta love Loopy Pro and Logic for sticking to the Apple ecosystem.
You might be surprised about the scope of the team. It's not necessarily proportional to the size of the company. iOS music apps don't generate enough revenue to support "significant" development resources in most cases.
That is true.
On the other hand cross-platform support is one of the bigger selling points of Zenbeats. It's hard finding ways to stand out in a crowded field and competing against someone like Apple who have more reasons (selling hardware) to be able to absorb what might be non profitable development effort otherwise.
There's also the conundrum of trying to prepare for Apple OS upgrades. It can be inefficient to chase after problems with beta OS versions. No one wants to rush in fixes for things that might change in the OS before the beta is done. It's like trying to hit a moving target. Sometimes fixes are delayed in the hope that a stable target is at least in sight.
All that said. Yes, it's not a good look.
(But ... why the f*ck is it so common for iOS updates to break things in the first place? That really shouldn't happen as often as it does. Ask just any developer and they'll tell you what a pain in the ass it is to keep up.)
FYI Audiobus, capable DAW of your choice, IAA, and buncha IAA apps are working fine for me. I keep waiting for deprecation, but years later I’m still fully “precated”… or undeprecated… or undeprecationless…???
That makes sense to me. As they improve the efficiency of their code moving more legacy code to Swift, I would think install sizes would improve.
I haven’t noticed any major problems at this stage. The only issue was having to manually restart the device to get my network connections working right. I haven’t had the opportunity to explore all my apps in detail just yet though. I like the separate passwords app - discovered a whole pile of old WiFi networks still in there that I could clear out. It should make it easier and faster to access the Passwords when I need a verification code too.
Audio Modeling and Roland warn against using iOS18, but I can't find any details.
Does anyone know?
I need to investigate it because I develop apps.
EDITED I found the detail about Zenbeats. Crackles seems to occur.
Both KQ Dixie and KQ Sampei work perfectly under iPadOS18. I use them both every day.
I've updated everything. It's the developers who need to be on top of these things. It's not as if Apple suddenly springs the latest releases on them. They've had months to test their apps and they really should have been ready on the day of release.
Yes, I have been using iOS 18 beta for three weeks but I cannot find any serious issues.
So I am interested in what kind of problems Audio Modeling and Roland have.
You're not wrong, and this is a valid frustration. It's worth considering that not every app is entirely written by the developer who releases it. Any app that uses AudioKit, or JUCE, for example, has a huge reliance on a 3rd party to make the same efforts in these cases. Not a claim about the nature of the specific apps you're frustrated with, but in modern app development this issue is often compounded across multiple developers.
Yes, one would think a company as big and well-established as Apple would stop breaking their own systems as often as they do. It has gotten "better" over time, in some respects. The golden era that most users miss, where big, exciting changes happened with every major iOS release was often a f***ing nightmare for developers. On the other hand, I sometimes feel more frustrated now with all the flashy bells and whistles being added on top of bugs that are years-old.
All that said, no system is perfect, and they do enough stuff right to stick with it.
Yep. That's the bottom line.
There's no substitute.
They also make a lot of money for millions of investors, even when they don't realize that their pension funds, retirement plans, etc. are bolstered by Apple's stock performance.
Doesn't deter me from bitching about the stupid stuff though. 😎
... which has the added side benefit of twisting @ neum's undies in a bunch.
In summary, all issues with iOS 18 so far:
SWAM Instruments not working
Zenbeats warnings (crackles)
Edit: I removed LP from the list, here is the espiegel123 quote: “I've seen a few messages from a few people running into some audio problems in Loopy Pro that are unusual and seem to coincide with upgrading the OS”
Edit: Apple has provided MacRumors with the following statement: "We have temporarily removed the iPadOS 18 update for M4 iPad Pro models as we work to resolve an issue that is impacting a small number of devices."
Edit: LP4i problems with AirPods (PROBLEM SOLVED)
-gregsmith: “I seemingly can’t get logic pro to play through my airpods since iOS 18”

What kind of AirPod problems?
I used my old Airpods with LP4i for more than one hour yesterday with no issues apart from the regular BT latency?!
Ask @gregsmith.
Nope, apart from the BT Latency I’ve had no problems with LP4i and my AirPods.
Yesterday I used them for over one hour without any issues.
I do wish it would be possible to enable ‘Game Mode’ for all apps as the BT latency is noticeably reduced…
Update: Apple has provided MacRumors with the following statement: "We have temporarily removed the iPadOS 18 update for M4 iPad Pro models as we work to resolve an issue that is impacting a small number of devices."

I don’t understand why a large company, with the resources Apple has, can’t be bothered to keep their operating system from bricking their own devices…especially with their largest ecosystem. It’s not like this Apple suddenly springs this update on their development teams. They should have had at least 3 months to test this, and it should have been ready Day 1.
They specifically said "a small number of devices" were affected. What does "a small number of devices" mean in reality? 100? 1,000?
Looks like I dodged a bullet.
I hate that they placed a much used feature like Bluetooth on/off behind an extra screen. Now I have 2 BT buttons in control center.
.
I’m following this thread because, when there’s a new iOS I wait. I read all the disasters and outrage in the iOS forums and note whether any of my essential music apps are affected. Then I wait some more and wonder why I need the new iOS anyway? Will it change my life? No. So I can’t be arsed. But then eventually I feel like I’m getting left too far behind so I do it and, meh. I have never understood the rush to update. It’s like that scene in Flash Gordon where the treeman who used to be on Blue Peter goes for his initiation and sticks his hand in the tree stump.
No issues. The "life improvement" features were fun for 15 minutes. A new coat of paint is slapped on it and the crowd goes crazy. The iPhone mirroring would be cool if you could access the camera (yes, there is the webcam thing in previous versions) All of my music apps worked without issue on the iPad. I did have to re download Analog Lab Pro on the desktop side.
I will say this. I am a fan of the Passwords app and going to test that out to see if I can cancel the third part subscription model.
I was looking forward to the transcription features but the transcription quality seems very weak compared to OpenAI's. Strange as I assumed that was what they were using. They might be using a very light version. Meanwhile they have also made small changes here and there that add nothing but make you adjust to a new UI. The usual nonsense 😅
Thx, bro. I immediately took automatic update after your warning, I use SWAM … A LOT.
Are you using a 3rd party password manager now, and if so which one If I may ask? I haven't dug into the updated iOS Passwords app, but wondering the same thing.
Tech terrorism, isn’t the future anymore.
I really like the Passwords app as it just makes the password process easier than before where you had to dig into the Settings app to find the info and things like WiFi passwords were not actually available. The only issue that I can think of with it is something that was pointed out online about the password to access it is the same password you use to get into your device. I guess if you’re using your face this might not be so much of an issue….
Thanks for sharing. I don't use face id, and don't like that the device and Passwords app share the same entry passcode. It's one thing that 3rd party password managers will always have going for them, not to mention if someone gains access to your iCloud account they will have all your passwords, too. The updated app does look nice, though.
