Ah good to know!
So after a lot of tweaking and experimenting, I believe I understand the Nam stuff a bit better…at least how it works in the Pocket Master. As a Tonex user the Nam profiles seem to be more influenced by the gain and volume settings than I’m use to in Tonex. Adjusting gain and volume helped me work out some tones I am happy with. All in all I’d give the Nam implementation in the Pocket Master a thumbs up.
Fwiw, and this is true of TONEX, too: if you are looking to accurately reproduce the source capture, you leave the gain and volume alone and use the input level to push the amp. They are static captures of one set of knob settings that will accurately reproduce the amp. You can use the gain knob but it won’t reflect how the amp would be with more or less gain. You would load a different capture for that.
Btw, that is what is unique about the Gigfast Lite built-in models…they used NAM capture methodology to capture the response of the knobs…it is like having many captures in one.
I totally understand. I’ve had a Tonex pedal since launch day and have probably 3 or 4 hundred captures. I’ve done a lot of listening and comparing profiles in Tonex. I do realize that once you adjust the gain (or any knob for that matter) you are deviating from the sound of the original profile. That being said for some reason the Nam captures in the Pocket Master, specifically when it comes to gain and volume at their static settings seem to need to be adjusted. There are some issues with the Nam profiles in the PM. For example I tried to turn the bright switch off on one of the profiles, it wouldn’t turn off but by clicking it the gain of the profile shot up to a value of 35829 and it got extremely noisy. Keeping in mind that the highest value actually allowed on the gain is 100. Why the value jumped up to 35829 is beyond me. Obviously a bug. I’m pointing this out because I feel like the gain and volume almost have to be adjusted with the profiles. In Tonex I don’t have this kind of experience where adjusting of gain has as much impact on the profile as I do in Nam in the PM.
I’d also like to point out that it’s quite possible that it’s me getting familiar with gain staging in the PM and maybe poorly captured free Nam profiles contributing to my experience as well.
My experience with NAM captures in GigFast Lite and PD Space Guitar is that they behave very much like TONEX captures. I use input gain before the plugin to adjust things. As with TONEX captures can be all over the place in terms of what the input level should be. Recently, people have started adding metadata to indicate the calibration.
It is also important to know if a NAM capture captures the whole rig including the cab or just the amp.
Good point. I’m sure I’ll get it sorted. I’d love to hear your opinion on Nam in the PM if you end up getting one. Also keeping my eye on what people will have to say on YouTube once they start talking about this update. I’m new to Nam and my thought was like you said and I wasn’t expecting to even touch gain or volume. I’ve only listened to a handful of profiles in Nam so it feels a bit foreign to me. I typically prefer very clean amps and in Tonex I can tell right away if someone has labeled something clean when it’s not or if the capture is subpar….all I can say is Nam, in PM feels different. I did manage to get some tones I really like lol
@espiegel123 tomorrow I think I’ll do some comparisons between Nam in the PM and the iOS Nam app. That’ll help me clear some things up.
I haven't tried the new NAM app from Artera, but I gather there are kinks still being worked out.
Caved and bought one. Listened to a few more YouTube reviews and actually got swayed by some of the more dreamy presets. I think k it may help me get back into using the guitar again. Yay!
Congrats haha
You know that I also blame/thank you 😝
Tempted by this lovely little gadget. Specially after the update where it can load NAM profiles.
I read that it can load 5 custom IRs. How many NAM profiles can it load?. Is it 5 betweeen IRs + NAM ?
No doubt about it at this price point you can’t beat this product - despite not having any firsthand knowledge or experience I would recommend it after seeing more purely conjecture based off of seeing what the Fender can do and what the NuX MPP does.
If I didn’t want the extreme compactness of the Fender micro amp (or the fender brand name) , I would go for this. If I was a tone junkie I’d be Curious whcih i would go for but I don’t hear in HiFi the way other people do.
Like I’ll admit, the only reason I’m such a fractal proponent is from hearing what it’s capable of but not what I dial in myself - like I rely on the sound design of better tone heads than myself the same way I’ll use patches and presets rather than sound design create my own patches , but I think the axe 3 will be fractals last killer amp because the technology is making the necessity for dedicated modelers no longer the case - I would’ve saved about $2k if i built my studio 3 years after the axe Fx iii but hey, it’s my last foray into the gear world, so why regret the one big amp I bought (plus I think I still would’ve gotten the FM3 anyway at the same time these mini modelers were coming out and I would’ve been more annoyed since thee axe 3 serves as both interface and mixer for my hardware, whcih I’ve also stoped with acquiring since the fender so I must also just draw the line and stop myself here
Which is why I typed this all out - to remind myself NOT to find a reason or way to sneak this purchase in with so many bills this month, like it’s bad this month ahahah not gonna lie bro
In any case, Don’t get me wrong (for my purposes the fender is still my favorite and top pick for this mini pocket amp/micro headphone amp category) but man, this does so much and half the price of the fender !
Speaking of which here’s a reminder to join the GUITARISTS GUIDE registry thread , so we can have a running conversation of all things guitar related - such as this, it would’ve been a GREAT addition [actually just before I hit the post button I wanted to ask the OP ? You can lmk if you want ? Or PM a moderator [hehe] if you want it merged ?]
Anyway
How many people are going to get this ? How many people already have some form (either fender or nux?)
I just got Fender Micro plus. Sticking with it because I’m wanting as authentic fender tones as possible for my new Telecaster. Satisfied.
+1 💯
Got mine today and its insanely good for what it can do at the price.
I visited Japan at christmas and bought a travel guitar - pignose travel guitar with built in speaker - did a mod to turn the headphones out into an effects loop - the soundcake is perfect for this as its small and multi fx and works so well with my iPad mini, perfect guitar recording device.
Very cool. 😎 happy for you
I like the pig nose too
Absolutely interested! Anything guitar community related I’d love to be a part of!
Congrats! I feel the same way about the iPad connectivity….for me it’s an absolute no brainer at $64.
Good to hear it’s working for you! have a the first Micro and I agree the tones are great, quick, easy to pull up and it does the job as an audio interface. The one thing I don’t like when using it as an interface is having it connected to the guitar. Headphones and a USB cable coming from the guitar feels a bit cumbersome but again it does the job. I’m using the Pocket Master with a wireless guitar setup and it’s just more comfortable than using the Micro for me. Not to mention my Micro does not offer monitoring of the material being played. I also don’t think it works with my iPad although I may be wrong about that.
OK, guys, after all the praise you've given SPM, I'm tempted now (If it's better than the NuX MPP I have).
My intention is to use SPM as a regular audio interface as well, so skip all internal effects and use iPad AU exclusively.
I would like to know 3 things before buy:
1. Is the RTL lower than 10ms on 64samples/48kHz? (NuX 12.7ms)
2. Is it possible to disable all items in the effect chain? (NuX - yes)
3. How could I set direct monitoring to OFF? (NuX - annoying, you must set dry/wet to 100% in the app every time)
Appreciate any information, thanks in advance.
@espiegel123 testing the Artera NAM app in comparison to the NAM implemented in the Pocket Master. The app sounds infinitely better. There is no “gain” parameter in the app but there is input level. There is also no “bright” switch in the app so it would seem that Sonicake have something a bit different going on with their version of NAM. I loaded a clean tone into the app and the results were exactly what I expected. Loading the same profile in the Pocket Master requires some adjustments to gain and volume to get a comparable result to the app. To my ears the pocket master sounds overdriven when loading in a Nam profile (and not necessarily in a great way). Again, with some adjustment it sounds fabulous. I thought the Pocket Master was stellar before the update and NAM support is a welcome addition .., it just requires some tweaking to the NAM profile gain and such to get it to sound as expected.
So the long and short of it in my opinion is this-
Aside from Nam implementation, the Pocket Master Amps and Effects are rock solid on their own and well worth $64! The ability to load NAM profiles is great to have but need to be tweaked throughout the gain staging aspect of the Pocket Master.
I’d love to hear what others think of the NAM implementation in the Pocket Master. Also if anyone is planning on using NAM profiles and using the Pocket Master with iOS I recommend getting the Artera NAM app just to do their own comparison.
You can load in 5 NAM profiles as well as 5 IR’s
If someone with the device has the ONYX Latency Meter, I'd be curious to know the results at buffers of 64 and 128

@Uprightmusic : I was thinking about what you said about NAM in the sonicake. Does the interface not have an input level adjustment? I don’t mean in their NAM plugin, I main an input level adjustment before all the plugins?
The Pocket Master has an input level adjustment in the settings. I have it set to 0db. It’s adjustable from -20db to 20db. There’s also a preset volume at the end of the preset blocks which would be considered output level. When using it as an interface there’s also USB settings for FX Rec, Bluetooth Rec, and Monitor. All of these I have at their default of 0db.
@espiegel123 the NAM profile is in the Amp block and replaces the Pocket Master amps but uses the same parameters found in the Pocket Master on board amps. The UI does not change to any parameters that might be associated with NAM profiles specifically. This makes me believe Sonicake is doing something to make using the NAM profiles easily integrate with their current amp UI at the expense of things being a bit skewed when loading in a NAM profile
@espiegel123 i mentioned this before but there is no “bright” switch in the NAM app on iOS but every single NAM profile you load into the Pocket Master has a bright switch. Trying to turn this bright switch off results in utter chaos from my experience.
