    Not really a limit on length. One track can be just drums only. Although a limit of no more than 16 is probably a good limit. ;)

    I’m of the opinion that anything that makes a noise can be a drum sound. But, to add to your question: what about trigger loops loaded into a “drum machine”. I could easily have 16 of those and still record onto one of the 4 tracks. In the good ol’ days they were recording entire bands to 4 tracks by bouncing. So, is it that you can record anything you want as long as you keep it within four recorded tracks? or are you only allowed to use 4 different instruments on 4 tracks? It all gets rather confusing. In fact I think I just confused myself….

    Yah I assume the spirit of the thing is four different instruments, but a lot of drum kits often have sfx too. Personally I would draw the line at full on loops on drum pads for this exercise, particularly melodic ones.

    Yep. I agree with the loops bit. I don’t think sfx should be ruled out if it’s in the spirit of this game and if they’re part of the drum kit. They’re just percussive elements like any other drum sound.

    1. Is it using a particular scale? I’m pants at working out scales from keys in different tracks lol
    2. How is track 4 meant to be working, as I’m getting no sound for it in the mixer. I’m a bit useless with Drambo by the way lol

    This is awesome - what did you use?

    Tracking and rough arranging was Drambo. The drums were Sitala, but the other 3 tracks were Drambo devices. Vocals were recorded in Ableton then dumped into Drambo Sampler for sequencing.

    @Fruitbat1919. This tune had a great groove. Very much a live feel. The bass was awesome. Really cool contrast between the drums/bass and ethereal synth sound. Dang, the tempo change! Nice one.

    @JWMMakerofMusic. I like the vibe of this tune. Had an epic feel to it. Nice groove. And nice synth lead noodling. That bass is nice and thick sounding :-)

    @Dav. This is was a really pleasant listen. It reminds me a lot of the kinds of stuff they used to play on WNUA in Chicago in the 90s. Spent many a night listening to tunes like this as I was studying.

    @yellow_eyez. That bass is so deep! Really dig the African percussion. The contrast between the acoustic percussion and glitched out sounds is really interesting. Cool little journey you take the listener on. Oh dang, that part at 2:30 is crazy. :-)

    @GeoTony. I really like this. Great moody, somber vibe. Damn GeoShred is expressive.

    @KirbyMumbo. This is cool. Dig the rap and the backing tracks. The synth chords reminded me of Weather Report in heavy weather days. The busy drum part added a nice contrast to the vox and synth.

    @ecamburn Thank you so kindly, my friend. I actually didn't suggest the four track challenge originally. I just simply came up with the guidelines and such.

    I still need to catch up on listening to everyone's works. 😅 Last two nights of sleep were rough.

    This is a very improvised attempt. I will do a 2nd take more arranged, and maybe 2 more tracks because I fucking love this idea of 4 track challenge. I was obsessed with this idea but not recording anything because comments as "Oh, too raw.... u need more production, better sounds, more structure", etc...

    So thanks for this idea. Can we do it monthly or something? haha

    Whatever is used, it must remain as four tracks. Recording it into an iPad would be ideal, but in keeping with the spirit of being "app agnostic", being "device agnostic" isn't so strange. :) Just make sure to take a screenshot. Cheers and good luck.

    Reminded me of the 12inch mix of Japans Life in Tokyo and the Donna Summer hits - forgot the name of the guy that produced them, but it has a similar style. Like it :)

    Using BM3 for this I have to tell myself not to resample bits back onto pads.... I think... hah! I think maybe a definition of a 'track' may be useful.

    I assume it is something like a single AUV3 instrument (don't use preset switching), that can have a ton of AUV3 effects on it that are automated. For a drum track (one allowed) you get up to 16 hits and keep them perc/drums/fx without strong melodic elements (?). But yah the hacker in me wants to bend the rulz
