@Kaikoo When I've expressed my enthusiasm about MTS it was based on first-day impression, after I've purchased the app. I would never say, a DAW is perfect. I think thats simply impossible with apps as complex as DAW's. I've really enjoyed the workflow in the midi editor and still like it a lot. Never tried IAA. I do not use IAA at all, cause it is to unreliable for me in any app.
What I really like about MTS, is the workflow in the midi-editor. For me, thats a very vital part of a sequencer. With the note-repeat function and the sel right/ unsel right optins it has editing-options, which I miss in the midi-editor of Cubasis. The zooming works reliable and like I expect it. The drum editor is also nice.
But there are also flaws. I don't like the event-handles of midi-notes. It can be fiddly and frustrating to modify the position and size of smaller notes, especially if many small notes are displayed at once. That is a problem MTS shares with Cubasis, and it can really break the workflow of a midi-editor, imo.
I think, that this issue can only be addressed with a completely different form of event-handles, like they are realized in Nanostudio or Beatmaker 2. I really don't know, why Cubasis, MTS and others are still holding on handles, integrated into the event. Perhaps because it seems natural to potential buyers, but in a real-world workflow it is neither efficient nor precise. It doesn't fit for a small touch-screen, like that of the ipad.
If I touch a small note, in order to move it, it is partly obscured by the finger. And when I move it, the destination will get also partly obscured. This makes precise movement of small midi-events nearly impossible.
An other thing is, when I want to move smaller notes, I often resize them, instead of moving, cause the handles are too close together.
This problems doesn't occur on mouse-driven desktop-computers, thats why integrated event-handles do work on these platforms. But they can't be adopted to the ipad, without this major drawbacks.
The developer of Nanostudio has successfully avoided both problems, by offering discrete, static event-handles, which are having always the same size. Because the handles are placed on the bottom and right border of the editor, the finger won't obscure the view, while manipulating notes. The workflow of Nanostudio gets high praises even todays from a lot of people for good reason.
Great analysis, @Earsinn. I hope you will share a screen shot or something with the MultitrackStudio dev to show how much better MIDI note sizing and moving could be on a touch interface.
Have you passed your long writing to Giel? If not I am going to forward your message. I have told Developer to concentrade on midi editor and make it better than other apps. I buy MTS because of the midi editor reason! I just know the basic. I am going to do more editing this few days and see what can I do with it! I like Gadget's, but too sad it doesn't have undo/redo. I am very very midi editor oriented, so I definately support your view point and rethink what your saying is about!
BTW, Giel is doing fix on IAA and vitual midi synth stuck notes or scrubbed note problems. He is so ambitious to be the best for MTS! I am so happy about on joining with MTS. Not perfect Daw but better than at this moment!
@Kaikoo I've posted this already on the MTS forum. But within a thread about an other problem, I have: The missing "Don't follow playhead" option.
Ok, I will forward and add some thought to it few days later!
Thank you! It would be great, to see a better form of note-handling in MTS. I'm lookuing forward to it.
@Kaikoo I've just started a new thread, about a different form of event-handling in the MTS-forum. The original thread, where I've mentioned it had a missleading thread-titel, cause it was about an other topic. It would be fantastic, if somedays MTS would provide an optional event-handling, like it has been realized in nano-studio. This would greatly enhance the workflow.
Is the pitchshifting and timestretching realtime or destructive editing?
Also I loved Auria for its editing smoothness, so nice for slicing and moving stuff around as well as the fader handles on objects. Thing is it was super flakey and i had just about every project get corrupted along with the snapshots. Anyway is MTS stable in this regard?
I haven't used pitch shifting. As for time stretch, when you change the tempo of part or all of a track, you have the option of reprocessing the audio in the project as well. If you ask for audio to be changed, the audio tracks will be reprocessed and stretched - so I guess that would be destructive (though of course you could very easily reprocess back to the original tempo, so not sure if this is what you would call destructive).
Stability is excellent IMO. Self-contained projects, both with MIDI and audio, are extremely stable. When using AB or IAA, you are subject to the quality of implementation in the other apps and iOS itself. One thing that captivated me in MTS is that I have a lot of high quality soundfonts, and I always try to use the internal SF2 player for my sounds, in order to avoid inter-app madness as much as possible. The ability to play SF2 files ends up being economically interesting, because there are a lot of very good soundfonts over the web, both free and commercial, and I find myself relying less on apps that just produce sounds.
Another very important point for me is that the developer is extremely responsive. All emails get answered very fast. I have come across minor issues over time, and all of them have been addressed very quickly and professionally.
Hope this helps.
I went ahead and bought the Pro extension last night. Was deliberating over buying Pro MB in Auria but decided instead to get the pro iAP for MTS. It comes with a multiband compressor, not as good as Pro MB naturally but it's very good as part of the package. Auria Pro still looks a way off so I think that Giel is benefiting from this
>
He certainly is! I haven't regretted buying the Pro Extension. I'm not an expert on the effects, but between the 32 tracks, automation, time stretch, etc., I feel like I got my money's worth.
Yes, I'm finding working with MTS to be more productive than with Auria (although will still get the Pro update and see how that improves things). Glad i have both though. I think auria could be better for mastering with the plugins.
Things I want to see in MTS include multi channel output like Auria and more options for the song editor.
New MTS update
It says that pro extension now features multi channel audio playback, tracks, groups and returns get an output selector to choose from the master section......
I can't see where this selector is and I have the pro extension, can anyone confirm how to use this?
Got it..it's in the song properties section, you enable all outs there.
Great unexpected update, now you can also use it as a live audiobus mixer with multiple outs and effects
I asked about this in the MTS forum a couple of months ago, Giel said it was under consideration and now here it is. He also said midi learn will probably be added at some stage but there was other work to do first.
The IAA and midi notes thingie fixed, very advanced update for me, thank you! Just tested on Animoog, work very well on midi track!
The vertical knobs requested also updated! I ask Giel for this also! Thanks so much!
Cool! Not really my area with these improvements (except for vertical knob control, love that). But good to see continued work. Here is the official change list:
What's New in Version 2.2:
Pro Extension now features multichannel audio playback. Tracks, groups and effect returns get an output selector to choose from the Master section and all stereo output pairs other than the one the Master section uses.
Rotary knobs can now optionally be controlled using vertical movements. See the 'Allow vertical movements' box in the Preferences pane.
IAA, Virtual MIDI and External MIDI instruments no longer solely rely on 'all notes off' MIDI messages to mute pending notes. It appears many iOS apps don't respond to this message.
Just tested on PPG Wavegenerator! work well too when I finger press start and stop on those midi notes track. So I think all the synth app users should be very happy now with MTS, MTS is highly recommended now for all iPad synth players!
Great news! Updating now...
Another nice little update landed earlier today, now with midi handles for notes along with iOS 9 compatibility. Also "find selected part" is a useful feature after scrolling along the timeline, you can snap back to your selected part.
Should be called the @Earsinn update, seems like Mr Bremmers took the request for better event handling seriously...That's been the pattern with this app: people take the time to write him on his forum, and he updates the app accordingly. Thanks @Earsinn, didn't know I wanted the feature til you got it for me! Now to thank the restless Mr Bremmers on his forum.
This really a great new update - I'm very happy about the new handles. Great DAW, great Developer!
Updated thread to reflect new updates to the MIDI editor - really like it! Really impressive considering the PC roots of this app how he was able to come up with a pretty unique solution for editing MIDI notes on a touchscreen.
Yeah, the update is really useful! This app just keeps getting better.
Thanks for the update re the update, MTS already had the best editors a couple updates ago, the handles are amazing best in class (passes up NS and BM2, for me anyway). Another user request, sorted.
I feel like I've made pretty major breakthroughs with this app over the last 2 weeks or so.
Loves: time stretch implementation, their "snap" feature (it's very quick and intuitive), quick resampling of effects, Audioshare implementation, lots of other things that don't immediately spring to mind
Wishlist: More track-based MIDI In implementation (and their virtual port was visible within the app, to borrow a British term, it would lead to less "faffing about"). A faster way to enable edit modes (lasso, etc.), maybe with number of fingers used on a movement or something.
I've been behind on my personal use of this app (lack of time), but have been monitoring the changes/improvements, and it's really picked up again this Fall. Here's the 2.4.1 change list:
What's New in Version 2.4.1:
Includes almost 150 effect presets by Christian C. Thompson.
Effect preset support no longer requires Pro Extension IAP.
All file import/export dialogs now have Documents Picker option. Gives access to iCloud Drive, DropBox is available too if the DropBox app is installed.
And @Littlewoodg and @monzo and/or other devotees....
Your developing and steady enthusiasm has me thinking I need to put aside a week to try/learn/get used to MTS. Best videos/resource/learning method for converting the unconverted?
Oh, You have come at the right time. Most of the difficulties have been removed/fixed. Read the manual is important in front. If not, take it easy, because MTS has special personalities. It will be your extreme favoured DAW or the others. Since MTS is still in evolving, I think just a gentle fun is good at the moment. You will definately pick Auria P up end of this month. So, my advice is to take it easy, then reconsider what is your final DAWs.
@ JohnnyGoodyear - There are 12 videos that one of the forum members put up...sorry, but I can recall who uploaded these....
Any idea why a Google search for MTS shows a preview of it in the app store with one 1-star review? Then when you click the link, the actual rating is 4.5 stars with many more votes? That's pretty misleading.
