We will release it when it is ready. We thought we were close to done a while back and with a new set of beta testers, we realized we had a bit more work to do. With a piece of software this complex , it is difficult to accurately forecast timelines.
Ok I see. Does everybody get a mail when it is out?
I believe that an announcement flag will appear in Loopy Pro. There will be announcements in the various Loopy Pro communities (here, our Discord, the Facebook group).
I totally understand the difficulties forecasting timelines. Is there a ballpark though (Q1, Q2, next year, etc.)? Prior to beta testing the prediction was "weeks" and that changing as a result of beta testing is understandable, but I am not aware of any update since that timeline has come and gone. I also get not wanting to commit to another date and potentially have a repeat, but I think a lot of people recognize that things sometimes take longer than expected and just want to have a general idea of when it it may get released.
In sept or oct on discord, Michael's excitement with stating (paraphrased) 'very soon!', simply for the fact he said that over 'itll be ready when it's ready' - my understanding is that it's any day now, but there's a couple issues that need to be squashed, and pretty much every day is 'very soon' but just pushes back one day at a time
From our side, it's a lack of info, but from theirs, it's soooo close. And they wouldn't want to say 'two weeks' when there's zero guarantee they can hit it
So, patience is key
Better to put out a polished finished project over getting an Early Access beta-test public 'Final? Really?' release
(Don't want anyone upgrading only to run it into issues that 'should have been tested for!')
That was my understanding but that comment on discord was made before beta testing and the post I quoted indicated that "We thought we were close to done a while back and with a new set of beta testers, we realized we had a bit more work to do. " When I hear statements like that, it sounds like beta testing uncovered some issues that will take significant rework to solve. I was asking for a general window of when it is likely to be released (3 mo, 6 mo, more?). I think that is fair. If you cant pin something down to a 3 month window then it is highly unlikely that it will come out anytime soon.
@DontShare : For the reasons I mentioned earlier, we won’t be predicting timelines. I am not sure what comment was interpreted as a prediction of “weeks” (and at this point is does not matter).
Whatever the comment was, it just goes to show that in something this complex you sometimes don’t know till you are basically done—if your goal is quality and long-term maintainability. We certainly thought we were close to release when we expanded beta testing in the Fall. And something came up which Michael realized needed some re-architecting.
And life happens. The development pace had to slow for a bit. Michael was sprinting for too a long time.
I am hesitant to give any sort of timeframe. The release is more than a few weeks away. But beyond that I can’t say. Don’t interpret that as meaning it is far off, either.
@PapaBPoppin:
That isn’t the case.
I stand corrected and apologize for speaking out of place
No problem.
@espiegel123 "For the reasons I mentioned earlier, we won’t be predicting timelines. I am not sure what comment was interpreted as a prediction of “weeks” (and at this point is does not matter)."
I really appreciate your engagement and support for all LP questions, but to be honest I am kind of mad about your handling with customers:
Michael marked the Midi development in August 2023 "in progress",
the next statement was July 24 "getting there"
and in august 24 " I’m hoping for a release in the next several weeks. It’s in the final beta stage now".
I bought LP last summer with the expectation that midi should delivered soon. I mean what's the point of advertising it even on the App Store "see what's coming next in Loopy pro, follow specific features at LP roadmap."
When I read "The release is more than a few weeks away. But beyond that I can’t say. Don’t interpret that as meaning it is far off, either." I know the same as before, nothing....
I understand it´s a quite complex app and it takes time but man.... a simple "yeah we have problems, we need time until.... xxx cause of ......" would not hurt, don´t you think?
"The development pace had to slow for a bit. Michael was sprinting for too a long time."
Yeah, we all have to sprint in this fuckng world nowadays. in our day jobs and everywhere else... and from my understanding he does this not for free.... and it's my most expensive app of all of them... no discount ever, full price...
Don't want to speculate but when I read "macOS coming soon" this should be clear that´s way to much going on for a small dev (or team?).....
As I said, no criticism against you directly, just from a customer's standpoint.... LP is collecting dust on my device... all these stupid midi workarounds are getting me off.....
so freaming true!
I purchased a maintaince upgrade at the end of December 2024 - I'm hoping I'm fairly safe in assuming that the 2.0 release will be within the 12 months from then?
Just checked my purchase date and it was Jan 2024
@espiegel123 I haven't used Loopy Pro yet, though I will look into it when the MIDI update is done.
Can you tell me if there is any automation curves currently present, or if they are planned?
Specifically I can think of 3 kinds of automation and they might not all be available/planned - volume automation, automation of built-in effect like filters, and auv3 parameter automation. Thanks!
Automation curves and direct automation recording are not in the 2.0 release. They are planned for the future.
Sadly, NS2 vibes…
Thanks @espiegel123
I enjoy using this app.
Thanks.
Not really. Even though the release is taking longer than anticipated, the work continues and some aspect of the delay is re-tooling things for a robust long-haul.
This isn’t a situation like with NS2 where the developer has been disappointed by sales and chosen to move on to something else.
This reminds me of the time when we were waiting for Michael to publish the first release of Audiobus. There were plenty of cries of “Are we there yet?” then too (or am I getting mixed up with Borderlands Granular?). I hope things aren’t getting too stressful at Loopy Towers because of this. I have faith that it’ll be a knockout update when it arrives.
Edit:- just found this old video in the “nostalgia” box. Take a look at the comments section 😉
Loopy Pro like other host or DAW applications is the basic framework for many iPad musicians. That means reliability in a lot of different hard- and software scenarios is crucial.
Taking this into account I am happy to wait. Specially in an operating system environment like iOS that has no easy rollback functionality. If an effects plugin fails in the middle of a performance I can often iron it out, but not if the whole host crashes.
I agree! I use Loopy for gigs and I want it stable and rock solid more than anything else.
Loopy is already magnificently versatile and complex (in the good sense) as it is. I personally don’t need midi too much, and I get by with Drambo or similar apps to do midi tasks in Loopy.
My feeling - from the occasional sidelines of the beta testing - is that Michael (and the beta team) is working very hard to add things while keeping the app super solid - and there’s actually been loads of great additions in 2024.
But, yes, midi is still on its way. I get the frustration, but we all probably just need to suck it up and accept that the midi deal was harder to implement than expected.
Also, thanks, @espiegel123 for your many tutorials and constant problem crushing for many Loopy users! 🙏
It's hard not to have dates to plan around but it's a no win proposition for developers and users alike to put dates out there in response to pressure IMO.
Yep, it'll be done when done. I use LP on my main electric guitar rig/pedalboard with Tonex Max app so I need it to be rock solid. Thanks to Michael and all beta testers in advance.
The last thing you want is something like what happened with Sonos recently and release an app update that destroys all the good work done up to now.
Better to have a complaint about the update begin a little late and have it working well when released then to have a complaint about how it doesn’t work properly and it should have been tested better (as @wim pointed out above).
Just shows there are a lot of keen people out there who want to see the finished result.
Let me join to this. Ed helped me many times (thank you!)
Yeah thanks @espiegel123
You been a great help to me over the last year
Please for the love of all that is good and holy - take your time and make a stable release. Haha.
The people who complain about the delay as if it were their RIGHT to demand an immediate release are hilarious to me.
fwiw, I don't think anyone has been particularly demanding. They've just been expressing that they would like to have more information to set expectations. It's reasonable to think that's easier to do and more worthwhile than it really is.
