Sorry if this has been asked and answered before:

I currently use LP most often as a control surface builder within AUM. Will the ones I've created migrate, or will I have to rebuild?

    There should be no difference

If you install the beta, you can later install the App Store version over it. Once 2.0 is the App Store l version, you won’t be able to reinstall 1.1.24 from the App Store. If you archive 1.2.24 while it is in the App Store, you might be able to reinstall it.

There are so many little quality of life improvements and bug fixes that I think it unlikely 1.1.24 would be preferable to 2.0. You can update your 2.0 without purchasing the new features.

I'm afraid I still don't understand... my 2.0? If I can't roll back to 1.1.24 because the Apple Store version is 2.0 and archiving 1.1.24 is very cumbersome (disabling iCloud backup at one point), wouldn't this 'force' me to buy the new 2.0 version again? How does the Apple Store know I already paid for 1.1.24 when the beta 'deleted' it and how is reinstalling 2.0 for free but without the new features???

2.0 by itself is not a paid upgrade. In the App Store it is of the same lineage as 1.x. Loopy will know which IAP you own and make features available accordingly.

If you update to 2.0 and choose not to purchase the update IAP AND you bought the IAP more than a year ago, then loopy will unlock the features you already paid for but not the new ones. If you bought the IAP in the 12 months prior to the new release, you get all the features.

@espiegel123 has described how 1.x vs 2.x works so this isn't about that. Just some added info about archiving a previous version of an app.

If you can back up an app to a PC or Mac using the free version of iMazing before it's upgraded in the App Store (forget TestFlight for a minute), you can revert to that version.

You don't have to turn off iCloud backup. Never did. You can turn off automatic App Store updates without turning off iCloud backup, and as long as you don't accidentally install the update, your existing installation will be unaffected. If you have an iMazing app backup and you did accidentally update, again, you could revert to the previous version.

Again, that's beside the point here as 2.0 won't be a separate app. 2.0 will be designed to work just as before if you don't purchase the update for the new features, for the lifetime of the app. As with any app, an iMazing backup is good insurance in case a developer ever screws up tho. 😉

(TestFlight is a different thing. You can freely swap between using any TestFlight build, or revert to the current App Store version. It's best to back up the Loopy Pro projects folder before doing so. I've swapped dozens of times and never lost a file, but it's better to be safe.)

Thanks guys. I always disable auto update in the app store, but my iCloud backup is not, and it would backup the testflight version of Loopy Pro as soon as I installed it (i.e. incremental backups). That’s why it was my believe to turn off iCloud backup. Wasn’t aware of the iMazing app and will have a look! Also did not realize 2.0 was a free update and you have the option to buy in app the new features. And yes, my IPA is over 12 months old.

iCloud backup doesn't back up apps. It only backs up documents. Turning off iCloud backup would have no effect except that you would have no current back up of your files such as documents and Loopy Pro projects should something happen to your device.

It's important to understand iCloud backup and restore. It's a full restore. You can't restore just parts. It also forces you to the latest operating system version available and downlads the latest app versions from the App Store, not from your backup. So, in the event you had to do a restore, there's no restoring an older operating system. And, the only way to get back to a previous version of an app is from a previously made iMazing app backup.

TestFlight is a different story. A TestFlight install replaces the App Store version on your device, and vice-versa. You can swap back and forth between them. Meanwhile though iCloud isn't backing up either of them. It's only backing up your Loopy Pro data folder.

Since iCloud restore is only a full restore as mentioned above, it can also be a good idea to copy your local Loopy Pro folder to another location such as iCloud Drive or a USB drive, or even just to another folder on your iPad. Use care in doing that though. Make sure you're copying, not moving the folder, and that you don't do it the wrong-way round.

Here's some detailed information on doing app backups with iMazing:

Did not realize that! Good point and I will d/l the iMazing app. Learned something new today which is cool. Thanks.

Downloaded iMazing but when I try to 'Download to Library' an app from 'Tools > Manage Apps > Device' it only copies the App Data, not the App itself (says so in a warning). From 'Library' it asks for my iCloud login and instead of copying the old app, it downloads the latest version from the Apple Store.... in other words, useless. Could you pease explain to me how to copy the OLD app to my Mac? I also tried 'Data > Apps > Copy to Mac / Extract App' but this also creates only an App Data file (.imazingapp). Also looked at "Transfer to another Device > Apps > Customize" to select only ONE app, but it warns: "Please note that the transfer implies a restore process which will erase ALL contents on the target device". Obvious not going to try that..... in other words, useless LOL.

Can you post a screenshot of the message that says Download to Library only downloads data and not the app? That has not been my experience.

It works by downloading the app from the App Store into the library folder.

Well, that's the whole problem: I have an older version of an app called Patch Base MKS 50 editor (made by Coffeeshopped) on my old iPad Air 2 which works perfectly, but the developer updated it and now it's broken (and refunded me after sending 100 complains). If iMazing downloads the app from the AS, it's the 'broken' version...

Nothing can extract an already installed app. Wim tried to make clear that you need to download the app while it is still available in the App Store.

Btw, that message you are showing is NOT about the download app function. That is a message about backing up app data—a totally different thing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's the only option there is in "Manage Apps". "Device" and "Library". The screenshot I showed you is from Device. Library just downloads the app from the AS. I appreciate your help but I'm 99% sure I'm doing the right things.

If iMazing can only download the current app from the AS and not extract/copy an older version of the app from an older device, I don't see the value of iMazing in my use case.

Oops, the screen capture does not show the drop down menu which shows all the avail. options. Not sure if this helps now.

I am not understanding your point. Let me re-cap what @wim was saying: you can download the app to your library to have a later-installable local copy. You have to do it while the app is the current App Store version. You can later re-install that version of the app to your device. You cannot extract a version of an app from the iPad/iPhone.

The point was that you can download loopy pro 1.1.24 NOW if you are afraid you might want to re-install it after it disappears from the App Store.

  • edited May 30

Yes, that was the original point. I jumped right on it because I also want to re-install the older Patch Base app from my old iPad to my new iPad Pro and kill two birds with one stone heheh. But I understand I'm too late: you need to download your working apps TODAY if you want to be able to re-install them in the future if needed. I completely understand now: It's not possible to copy apps from your device to your Mac with the (not so) iMazing.app ;-)

    Thanks for your help!

So 2.0 dropping any minute now confirmed? 😉

((Just kidding!!! I’m on the TestFlight and have been! Getting close though it feels 🙏🏽))
