I hope they add an effects section baked into the synth.
I know all about routing the synth to a bus for effects, and this works but its a lot of jumping around to get the effects screen to the synth Edit screen to the keyboard screen.

Ultimately a little built in keyboard with effects would really smooth this awesome sounding synth out.
And maybe a bus send as well on the synth

I’m using a MIDI controller when i can to avoid all the jumping around, without a MIDI controller it feels a lot like working with IAA to be honest

  • A '16-levels' pads mode with scales support would go a long way and give a two octave range to preview the sound with while tweaking the sound parameters.

And yes the tab-to-tab jumping can get kinda annoying especially when editing the effects in the mixer and trying to preview the sound and the transport controls should really be present on all tabs.

But it is what it is and I look forward to seeing where things go in the future :sunglasses:

Absolutely. 16 pads would absolutely do the job.

I had to bounce back and forth like 8 times to get the delay set right. Press a key switch back to effects and repeat. But a few basic effects on the synth would eliminate a lot of that.

But it was a very generous offering from the dev and I’m super digging it! I love a nice simple synth and this one sounds really nice. I’m very happy he gave it to us at all!

Based on the devs comments in discord i don’t think we will ever see transport on any other screen but i still remain hopeful

I've just hacked a poor man's delay into the piano roll (lower velocity trailing notes).
All sounds from the new Quokka synth. No presets used.

  • Hate that I can’t watch videos from the threads anymore…keeps telling me to sign in, I am signed in. Oh well.

  • Just learned about Quokka! love it! The timing for me is perfect. I’m newish to synths and I’ve been playing with a Korg NTS1 for the past few months, learning a ton and having fun. A lot of the Quokka features feel very familiar. I feel comfortable enough to dive right in. Thank you Elf Audio! 👏👏👏

    This synth is quite cool!
It's surprisingly powerful with a wisely chosen minimal set of controls.
    Well done @elf_audio 😊

It is isn’t it. My only initial criticism - one that applies to Koala generally - is that there’s no way (i can find anyway) to have the onscreen keyboard and the synth parameters on the screen at the same time so you’re limited to the one note preview on the Sequence screen when designing sounds (or have to have a sequence running with a range of notes). This isn’t ideal @elf_audio and could maybe do with some thought going forward?

yeh, that's my only criticism as well. I like having a keyboard available to noodle on when sound designing. Setting up a looping sequence is workable, but I can't say I enjoy working that way.

That said, my initial test drive was with the standalone version. tbh, I normally always use the AUv3 plugin, so the host keyboard is always available anyway.

I think I read in other threads, many people have that problem (I'm lucky so far). If you see the player, but it won't start, try hitting the YouTube logo in the lower right corner and see if you can watch on YouTube itself. Some folks could.

Yeah that works for me. I don’t see the YT logo, but if I hold the bottom right I can open a separate tab in safari with the video. Have to do that first, not press the play button first or will have to reload the page and try again.

    Great update!

So the “new direction” Koala could go in are additional sound engines? It definitely sounds interesting.

And would you be prepared to pay for more sound engines as IAPs?

Yup. Would have paid for this one, too.

  • is it possible to play two pads at the same time in piano mode on the sequencer screen ? it would be cool to play two of these synths at the same time and get a huge layererd sound

The only way i can think of right now, is to do it with koala as an auv3, since you can only select one pad per koala.
I just did it in aum using a midi keyboard to trigger two quokkas
I could be wrong tho and there might be a better way

Some sends would be ultra nice.

I hadn't messed with Piano Motifs Arrange feature until this week but I kind of dig the workaround they utilized as to not have the back and forth issue like you mentioned. Since Arrange brings you into a whole separate section of the app, slighty long pressing on a populated sequence pops up a native Apple Swift style menu with several quality of life options you might want.

I don't know if Elf Audio would want that but if you think that's not the worst idea I'll bring it up on the discord 🤪

Here's a screenshot of the popup menu,

LOL! I saw that. It read like the dev was carefully letting down in a kind way, but does seem like a bright red line that doesn't seem crossable.

I can't find the post and don't fully recall the pics but did the mockups for the transport take into consideration the sample tab real estate gets taken over when you edit edit/timestrech/eq a pad... now the synth is on there too AND MIDI Out has that monitor. There's a lot going on there as I type it out.

If it wasn't then the transport goes missing only on that page when you pull any of them up and it wouldn't be uniform like on the sequence and perform tabs. There's this smoothness/style that I think is (probably) rightfully being considered, with the sequences, transport, metronome staying parked.

You know on iOS when you tap the top of a website or a file and iOS brings you to the top of the page? I wonder if that could be reutilized or a variation of that could be snuck in for the power users. There's a ton of touch gestures that don't get utilized that could be quick shortcuts.

You can't play two live in-app, but you can copy / paste between sequence instances.

  • This is an unlisted video but it should play.
Basically this is fine for me to edit QUOKKA since this MIDI controller is so portable and strait forward….and add FX while playing the synth…. but really hope we get MIDI mapping. Currently it just breaks koala 🐨

  • @offbrands would looove some sends and just a couple internal effects! It would be so helpful.

Yeah the pics with the transport button looked fine to me haha I’ll work with it squeezed in! The transport button is also the only way to kill a stuck note so that could also be another reason to have it on the main page. If it confuses newbs that’s just to bad 🤣

Bring it up in discord maybe if we all do he will think about it! Id def pay iap for more features. Koala is my fav thing on my iPad!

What would internal effects supply that the bus effects don't?

I abuse the busses for drums and samples, the limit of 4 buses isn’t enough lol plus internal effects are just so fun 🤩

Yeah mostly this @wim - But I should have elaborated I meant sends on the front and buses in the back. As I type that I already know it sounds like shit lol. Theres so much to juggle when designing an app, I appreciate their consideration.

The stop all tracks thing has always been just a thing I've accepted, I really don't mind it the way it is but throwing spaghetti at the wall sort of thing. I'm not even sure if I mind or don't i'm just used to the way it's been!

  • After playing with this synth and messing around with resampling, my only want is for this synth to be quicker to access with fewer taps lol. I could use this on every track, even if just for tuning samples to C.

Right! Definitely would love it quicker but it'll do lol. It's such a great update.

  • so i been putting an instance of kola on 3-4 channels and playing the synth i. each one simultaneously. basically using it as a rack synth rig and it’s so fast to get a huge synth sound. so fun. i can’t wait to see what their next synth is

Damn sounds dope. Mind sharing a screen shot? Or a vid if you’re feeling in a share some vid mood 🙏🏽🤘🏽

Yeah, though I think I would like to have some form of automation or parameter locking, and that's probably a bit too much for the relatively simple concept of the app

  • What an amazing update
