I don’t think it’s really about the amount of traffic that comes in, my goal with this place is mostly about (1) providing a friendly and welcoming place for people to get help with making music and (2) providing a place where people can have a community.
I’m absolutely open to the discussion here on whether moderation policy should stay in place or shift, but any decision that needs to be made must maintain both of those things - and when my policy was a lot more laissez-faire, I had lots of people telling me that (1) was being compromised, because it was no longer a friendly place, and (2) was suffering too. People were dropping out all over the place.
Something about the breath of conversations happening here seemed to bring out the worst in some people, for reasons I can’t really understand. When I tried to personally take a hold of things without tightening things up too much at the same time, it was too difficult and stressful for me, and was taking away from my work with Loopy Pro, and bringing up my kid.
So, if anyone can think of a solution that accomplishes all the goals of those folks contributing to this thread – and I fully agree that they are all worthy – I would love to hear it. I absolutely would love to have and partake in conversations about what on earth is going on in NJ, and all sorts of other topics as well!
What @Gavinski said. I go here because I get tired of the toxic cesspool that Facebook has become . This is an iOS forum not a place to discuss drones , the Middle East , Trump ,
or the war in Ukraine , hence the old adage “Never discuss politics or religion among friends “.. It applies here . What @rheslip said also ..
Would it be possible to create a hidden sub-forum that people are only granted access to if they explicitly request it from a moderator? Zero tolerance of all the things that start arguments outside of it and let people put their tinfoil hats on inside of it.
Yeah. I’m inclined to agree. If everyone could be their best selves it wouldn’t be an issue discussing anything but it seems it can get tricky
Huh.. that’s an interesting idea. I could create a “Ball Pit” category hidden from the front page posts and with a warning/disclaimer at the top, and flagging disabled so people aren’t tempted to call on the mods all the time 😆 And what goes on in the ball pit stays in the ball pit.
I think we tried this a while back, and somehow the "other" category made its way back into the main category list. Hopefully this time the "other" category will stay in the ball pit out of sight, out of mind.
All the best.
A few forums I have partaken in have had issues with off-topic discussions descending in to controversy. It seems to be a general trend tbh.
The most successful method of dealing with it I think I have seen was with a football forum. They created a forum section that was only visible to logged in members. General users could choose whether or not to have that section and its posts visible. All political discussions and controversial topics that descended that way would be created in or moved to that area. That stopped those discussions affecting casual viewers browsing the forum. I think they had a warning on that forum section disclaiming it as the bowels of hell, so anyone was fair warned if they decided to enter there. People would still get banned for going too far, but the mods knew where the hotspot of the forum was to keep a watch on.
That‘s exactly what they do in germany‘s biggest forum for electronic music production for many years. People seem to generally like this thing (personally i couldn‘t care less) and it‘s hidden from the „latest posts“ mainpage.

edit: probably you can‘t even enter it without being logged in 🤔
That's a good idea. If the thread titles don't come up on show with the forum music related chat, let those that want that sort of thing have a place. Should make it a bit easier for those great peeps that moderate here.
That's similar to what they did on Muff Wiggler a long time ago--a free for all section where people could be as disgusting and rude as they wished so long as they kept it out of the other threads. I never went in there, but I'm glad it existed for people who need that kind of outlet.
I would observe that the MW landing page was more conducive to this kind of segregation than this forum's landing page, which seems to default to listing by chronology rather than topic or subsection.
This is a great idea, and would support the community that enjoys conversations and discussions beyond simply plugins.
Yeah good idea, let’s start with this one 😅😅😅 🤪🤪🤪🤪
This is a good idea , one section for Lfo’s and another one for Ufo’s
I guess you’ll have to ask @jwmmakerofmusic if he’s OK with you doing that first.
Your post. Your thread. Still open.
Pots/kettles/people in glass houses.
Lol! 😂 When the heck did I say that? Oh Michael_m, you crack me up dude.
🤣 👍
Yes @Michael, if the subforum categories can work over at the D&B forum, i think it’ll work over here too.
Cool. I'm up for it, although I reserve the right to be talked out of it later 😀
I'll just check in with @Doug and the other mods to see what they think, too. This ain't a one-man show
Please invite me to that forum if it gets created.
Life’s too short to not find humor in things my friend. 😄
Exactly! 💯
Okay, for starters: I'm going to make "Other" not visible on the main page.
I think we're going to try to talk individuals down more frequently, rather than closing threads, and see how that goes for a while. Often it's just one or two people who need help regulating, so that might be all that's needed. If anyone else feels compassionate and patient enough to help talk down those who are obviously struggling, please feel free - but only in that capacity, rather than the fight-fire-with-fire public pile-on 😀
It's understandable when a thread is closed for the original poster to take that as saying they shouldn't have posted in the first place. It is almost never that.
Hopefully thread closings are few and far between. When they do happen it's almost always because of the thread has descended into or is heading into inflammatory territory. The original poster is rarely the cause but seems always to feel they're being blamed. That's understandable, but it's unfortunate all the same.
Maybe there should be a rule that pointed comments made in standard music related threads about people whose beliefs or opinions you disagree with from the 'others' section, are not permitted.
No snide comments escaping into other areas. If you can't reply in a neutral manner, don't reply.
As for the "Ball Pit" idea, my first reaction is that having a thread moved to the "Ball Pit" would be likely to be seen as just as bad a form of censorship. I have the feeling the same people who are upset by having threads closed would be upset by their discussion being relegated there.
I'm all for less moderation. We all hate the need for that. It's hard to apply fairly and impossible to avoid making people mad either from doing too much or too little.
This is a great discussion by the way.
Silly question, but why don't the people who want to talk about Trump, UFOs and "She Said" just go and set up a new "non music" forum somewhere else?
There must be free forum software or sites out there where you can easily set up a forum to cater to your interests?
Anyone joining that forum would be cool with disscussion of those topics. And it would get rid of the problem for this forum.
You're citing examples that are somewhat on the extreme side. But it's a good discussion point.
Sometimes people complain about threads that aren't strictly on-topic as far as music goes, but can be thoughtful and helpful to musicians anyway. They have a valid point about the sterility of a community forced into just technical topics in an effort to avoid controversy. IMO, we're doomed as musicians if the only thought we can deal with emotionally are technical details.
I am not in favor of this idea, but then again, I am leaving the forum. My honest feeling is KISS.
This was meant to be a tech based forum and hiding the perverts somewhere doesn’t seem to be
a generous solution ( though I know it is intended to be so).
I do offer an alternative, however. I have reached out to some folks here about creating a new forum, dedicated to finished tracks, work in progress, and discussion about the joys and difficulties of creating music with iOS and creating music in general. lol, Someone has already requested a food category… maybe The Art of Making Lunch Anyway, the response, so far, has been very positive and will lead to exploration of the possibility.
I hope I am not offending anyone by this. It is just, as I see it, the simplest way to satisfy those who want tech and those who want art. (Or who want both with the same degree of integrity and visibility).
Anyone interested in this alternative pls feel free to DM me. I welcome you to join in.
Happy holidays to everyone! Good night and good luck 😘🥳
Interesting to note that we have no punch-ups for months and the second someone goes outside the "music only" request there are problems.
Anything political, lifestyle, spiritual, philisophical etc. has the potential to generate conflict.
Michael saying in the ground rules "Please keep all content related to music and music-making" but also saying that you can talk about any other matters as long as you don't have fights is like saying "the speed limit is 50mph, but you can go faster if you like as long as you don't have a crash".
You can't have your cake and eat it too.
Worked pretty good in Germany. 😉
People are damn good drivers there, and I never had any issues there in my Renault 5 that could only do 85 km/hr at best with the bike racks on top - as long as I stayed in the slow lane on the Autobahn. The accidents there were way lower than here in the US.
Of course ... when accidents did happen they were usually fatal. So a bit of darwinism going on there.
